I graduated high school in 1984. My brother was a drag queen. I remember everyone dying all around us, and no one cared. We lost so many spectacular people. It was so different back then. Queens would be thrown in jail for nothing, then raped and assaulted in the LA County jail. The cops and corrections officers would stand by and laugh. There’s a long way to go, but we’ve come a long way. I think of all those drag angels in heaven, and my heart aches.

Thank you for reminding us of the truth that paved the way in blood for where we are now. I wish we could honor the sacrifice by being further along in human rights for all of us. But I can promise that my friends and I are proud to fight for equal rights. I’m sorry for the disrespect and inhumanity that you and your lost loved ones experienced. Their comment about how no one cared about the AIDS pandemic while people immediately snapped to attention for Covid-19 was a real eye-opener for me.
@breadmaker
@breadmaker 3 жыл бұрын
I get their point, and it's a good one, but to be fair it's hard to compare the two diseases since Covid is much easier to contract, affects a much broader segment of the population, and the length of time between contraction and severe illness is much quicker, thus it has the power to overwhelm hospitals in a way that AIDS never did.

@breadmaker
@breadmaker 3 жыл бұрын
@@Marinaaduran yes it's not me saying that because that's not what I said. Covid is worse in the short term because it had the power to affect millions of people very quickly all at once, and it's easily contactable because its airborn (unlike AIDS which you can't get from just breathing air in a grocery store) thus completely overwhelming the health care system, whereas AIDS in the long term was worse because the mortality rate was much higher. More people have died of AIDS but also it's been around for about 40 more years than Covid. Both are awful in their own different ways but you lose a lot of nuance when you pretend they're the same thing.

The actress playing Mrs Orlando is Cecilia Gentili. She is originally from Argentina, from a little conservative town in Santa Fe where my parents were born. My mom told me how she was extremely bullied from a young age before transitioning. She was able to leave the town with another amazing actor from the town, Juan Pablo Geretto. I was really glad to see her succeed with Pose. It's amazing that younger generations have access to these kind of series/movies!
@searleseangmail

From her book: "Originally from Argentina, Cecilia Gentili came to the USA pursuing a safer life as a transgender woman. She lived undocumented for 10 years, hustling doing sex work which came with drug use. After surviving arrests and an immigration detention, she accessed recovery services and won asylum. She subsequently served as Director of Policy at GMHC and founded Transgender Equity Consulting, which works to ensure all people living on the margins receive dignity and respect. A storyteller and actress, Cecilia has appeared in FX's Pose and her own one-woman show The Knife Cuts Both Ways. Faltas is her first book." Wow!

I think it had something to do with Netflix not owning the rights to POSE until a year or two after each season was already released on FX. But after it was announced that season 3 would be the final season of the show the producers of this segment felt more comfortable shining a spotlight on this show because Netflix is less likely to lose viewership to a competing platform to a show that is "over"

@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 Not really. It's celebratory, and lots of it. Lots of rich history. My mom is a legend in the ballroom scene, and she has many terrible memories (losing friends to AIDS during the epidemic, botched surgeries disfiguring/killing trans women) but she still loves the culture. It's important to have things like that highlighted.
