It will be a slippery climb for the queens while keeping it fierce in their race to the top! And on the Main Stage, the queens create their best looks out of flowers, and showcase them on the very first Drag Flower Festival.
Did you agree with the top queen this episode?
did you agree with the lips sync winner?
did you agree with the bottom 2?
did you agree with the queen that went home?

i think it was very significant that they were so hype and flamboyantly gay during the mini challenge. palo sebo is usually done by boys during fiestas. young gay children have always been discouraged from acting flamboyant during physical activities or else they would be picked on. this is probably why they were doing "hoo, hoo!" chants throughout the challenge, they were trying to act masc. so to see them being so excited and gay during such a game was so cool to me. i could understand how it could be overstimulating though. these girls are very energetic 😂

In the Philipipines, the month of May features the festival called Flores de Mayo (literal translation is Flowers of May) ...It originated as a pagan festival celebrating bountiful rice harvest... When the spaniards colonized the archipelago, the festivities were given a religious twist by the catholic priests making it a Thanks-to-the-Virgin-Mary-for-giving-us-a-bountiful-harvest kind of celebration ...The festivities is culminated by the SAGALAHAN .... A parade of the village's most beautiful maidens in their finest attires...Each maiden is a SAGALA and given some sort of title....The parade of SAGALAS goes around town, on foot or riding on some mechanized carts or vehicles...Wether on foot or on carts/vehicles , arches adorned with colorful flowers frame the walking/standing or seated Sagalas....The The parade ends inside the church. A holy mass is celebrated ...In the holy mass, eacg sagala is given the chance to offer flowers to the statue of the Virgrin Mary.

Majority of the LGBTQIA+ members in the Philippines are very energetic, fun and street-smart. So, in DRAG, they mostly got these type of persona. As a Drag Race Fanatic, I understand your point of view on this. We also live for queens who feel glamorous and behaved. But once you vibe with OUR type of person, and reciprocate our energy, Momma, trust me you will be addicted! I already expected that there will be people who will come for you on this review. Maybe because we are still in the process of understanding each other. But gurl we also live for opinionated queen! Come on! Okuuurr! So don't feel bad about it. You do you! And may your channel grow!

In my opinion, the reason why the girls are so hyper is because we Filipinos have been waiting for Drag Race Philippines for a VERRRRYYYY LONG time... so to have this show to showcase Filipino drag is such a great opportunity to show the world.

That mini challenge was actually the best part of this episode, it was very funny and really giving philippine drag which is energy, fun and lots of comedy. But i get why you don’t like it coz you didn’t get the references. I’m actually shocked that this franchise is very filipino it wasn’t toned down for the international audiences, like so many things were not explained that the international audiences won’t understand. For example the theme for the photoshoot it was inspired by a filipino superhero darna, the talentshow was called TITE which means dick, the theme for the runway which is the national costume of the philipines, theme for the design challenge is a cultural parade in festivals and so many more. I wish they did a little bit of explanation for those things.

This is what I liked too! They really focused on it being very Filipino. Like they didn't care how they would have to translate it to the international audience, it was very much Filipino references first (and maybe have long explanation later ahaha)

Hi ms. Valery ! This comment is regarding the antics of many queens (them being too hyper , acting over-the-top without provocation, often showing stylized distortions in movements, etc.) during the climbing-the-pole mini challenge. The current local Filipino comedy scene on films, TV, stage, bars, etc , still has a heavy lean on physical comedy.... It has been that way for a very very long time.... This type of comedy style can be traced back to the dominant style of comedy of local travelling variety shows in the early parts of the 20th century called BODABIL ( root word is vaudeville ) .... Episodes one and two has shown that a lot of the queens on this farnchise/season still carry the BODABIL type of comedy in their repertoire.... My guess is, this trend shall continue till the finals.....just a guess though ! ....and....It is noteworthy to say that Bodabil, in its heydeys, has been featuring drag acts ( mostly male actors cross-dressing as female) in their comedy skits and musical numbers.

Your review is valid. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I just wanna add though, to the "mini-challenge energy" discussion, Filipino gays are louder, more exaggerated, and, someone may say, overacting because it's part of the culture. Gay people in the Philippines tend to do that because it's one of their ways to be heard, be seen, to stand out, and to fvck with the society who forces them to be macho and silent and manly. I understand though why you were confused about that because it's so far away from most of the Western queens you were probably used to who are more tempered and elegant. Just my two cents. Waiting for your reaction in the next ep!♥️

This episode was VERY enlightening for me. The mini challenge was actually pretty funny to me. I got the references (theirs & yours) & enjoyed the interactions during the challenge. The maxi challenge was actually REALLY good, IMO. Viñas, Precious & Minty DEFINITELY were in the top for me. I got where Minty was going & she executed it well. If Gigi had finished her outfit in time, she would’ve been in the top & possibly would’ve won the challenge. Turing & Corazón were DEFINITELY the bottom 2 this episode. Jiggly calling out Corazón for the dress that was NOT made in the workroom was a GAG!! I believe that weighed heavily in the decision of the bottom 2 placement. However, Turing ANNIHILATED her in that lipsync!! I have the feeling she’s going to be a Lip Sync Assassin this season. She TURNT that lipsync OUT!! SN: To the Filipinos watching Valery’s channel: first off, THANK YOU to those of you who are educating us foreigners with your comments about the culture. It is GREATLY appreciated!! Second, I know & understand how PASSIONATE the Filipinos are about the drag & ESPECIALLY the pageant culture (I remember the reaction that Catriona Gray received in the 2018 Miss Universe as well as the infamous 2015 Miss Universe debacle that happened with Pia Wurtzbach (Romero)). However, PLEASE be respectful in the comments!! Let this be an educational moment for those of us that don’t know and/or understand the humor or culture. It’s OK to have an opinion but PLEASE don’t be rude & disrespectful due to our cultural differences!! I encourage y’all to watch the live reaction videos & help educate us that DON’T know the humor/culture. So far, I’m enjoying what I seeing & am excited to see more. As always, Valery, keep up the GREAT work!! See you in the next video!! 😁

@rwtia64
@rwtia64 Жыл бұрын
Just to add to mini-challenge hype discussion, it's sort of normal for our gay and co. crowd in the Philippines to be "extra" as a way to entertain both the people around them and themselves. You'll notice that the queens are holding hands as if waiting for a big announcement, and they react like they're gonna cry of happiness and the others cheer. The context here is they're pretending they're being called for some big announcement, like they won a pageant category lol. A bit more context: this also happens in simpler or really random settings like when people have been waiting in a line for sooo long (like at some fast food chain takeout lines that are oddly taking too long, they'd do this when their order is up). It could start with just a small group, and soon everyone will be going along with it. I'll try to look for a video showing this and link back here if I find one. 😆 It is, admittedly, not for everyone. As someone who's pretty quiet and shy, when this happens around me, I just giggle from the sidelines because I can appreciate them just goofing around and trying to lighten the mood when needed.

also Valery when the judges and host said something about Turing, its NOT IN A MALICIOUS WAY, a lot is lost in translation especially for foreigners when Turing was called in the Mini Challenge and was said that she was like a "pig on a stick that is getting roasted" they were talking about Lechon which is a popular foor in the Philippines and it is a roasted pig that is put on a stick, but you might say, well that is still calling someone fat, and yes it is, but not in a bad or rude way I am a chubby guy who has been called a Lechon or Fat alot in my elementary to high school days but I just laugh it off since I know they didn't mean to harm me in any way and we are just having fun, we read them to filth back anyways so its not a thing to be screaming or be angry about and when Turing was saved from elimination in the bottom 2 and she said "You're gonna see more of this" and Paolo (the host) said "Not more of that" in a laughing manner, she is not referring to her showing skin but more on the actual thing she is wearing which is the dress/garment she made since its a design challenge, like who would buy an ugly made bra and a long skirt and the judges are actually rooting for her showing skin and doing body positivity in the show

This whole episode was just ONE full day. For the tight time, I think they all gave a valiant effort. They had to go minichallenge, design, runway, judging, lip sync, sashay away before the flowers wilted. They didn't have the overnight to bring their work to the hotel to finish. Viñas design was so effective because she basically followed the design of the caro. These are the vehicles that carry the saints' icons across the community to the church during Holy Week. If Vinas was raised in a religious school, I won't be surprised if they helped design some of the caro in their childhood! And her corsetry gave very much palaspas energy, something that people carry on Palm Sunday.

I'm just gonna add to the last comment i had, I have a weird feeling that if the will do a drag race Vietnam it might be free on KZfaq for like a year than if there's a new season they'll take the last one down it it'll be available on the streaming service. Also miss Corazon had so many crowns that it is all present in Jiggly's mouth. Plus I think yes the Language barrier is somewhat of a problem but let's not forget people Pilipino actually have 2 main languages English and Tagalog, i think it might be A. the cultural references or B. they are known to be very energetic watch any pageant crowning you'll see so that might be why.

To be honest no shade to corazon, honestly she could have just edited the look a tad bit but not add the barb wire, it completely distracted her body/figure. But to be completely honest with you i'm glad they didn't disqualify her, but Miss Gimhauy on drag race thailand season 2 actually got to go to somewhere and have a scooter which was never in her suitcase but the judges could have called that one out aswell.. But I love Paolo Already she's iconic than any other judges.. When she asked where the flowers were her face made me laugh so hard LMAO, she just said ohhhh, okay - chuckles .. I honestly think Viñas should've won Episode 1 and Minty should've won Episode 2, just out of preference. Either way they both won their challenges, and it's definitely a good thing given that the two of them are my absolute favorites thus far. Turing and Precious are the other two people I look forward in the finale. I wrote an article about Turing once and she's just the sweetest! She's also known as one of the tightest lipsyncers in the scene (as it was showed in the lipsync 👏), and I love how international audiences try to catch up with Filipino humor 😭. Love your reactions, please continue doing this season! 💚

Minty and Vinas winning their respective episodes sounds about right. The talent portion's time were very minimal and Minty shows a lot in that minimum time, whereas Vinas' comedy will be more effective had it been longer. Regarding the Ter-No... challenge, Minty's was more iconic and beautiful adding the mythological story behind it. Vinas' was beautiful too and perfectly cinched in her body but... flowers and everything makes it look common. Now, for the second challenge. Let's say Minty and Vinas are equal. But Vinas managed to score some extra points cause 1) she used her slipping to her advantage and made it fun. Plus, no leaves or props fell during her fall, which attest to the craftsmanship applied to that look. So yeah. Vinas totally wins this one.

I don't know if anyone's pointed it out yet but I'm sure you know that money is majority of the issue here. Fully understand that it's not an excuse to deliver a cohesive look but it's definitely a factor in why there's a little bit of a disconnect regarding the quality of some looks. I think Jo Koy has a joke about how much a comedian makes in the Philippines. Fried chicken and flip flops. All that, to say that comedy is already not a well respected form of art here, imagine female impersonators and what they have to go through to get some coin. I hope that's worth noting and considering. Much love!

Lady Morgana's hype attitude is a very common street gay kind of vibe, which makes all their interaction so funny. You need to watch the Miss Universe reactions from the Filipino gays to understand. The constant shouting when someone's name is called, like how the pageant girls react when they get their name called in the top 10 spot. It's so funny and energetic, which I don't think the other franchises have

I think their reactions during the mini challenge while being called one by one is an exaggerated reference to how Filipino gay people reacts when top 10 is being announced in a gay pagaent. Filipino gays are known for being messy, smart, creative and expressive individuals. What you see here is just a tip of the iceberg hahahaahahah

You should give them some slack and not base your opinions in comparison to other franchises especially with how high the standards in the US franchise is in now. This is literally its FIRST season. Drag Race isn’t even widespread here in the Philippines, local gays don’t know this show.

I would have agreed with you on your comment . But this episode they were given all items to create a haute couture flower look (that represented the culture and celebration in the Philippines) and 1 maybe 2 contestants gave us that. They didn't need to bring any garment from home. They needed imagination.. talent... and uniqueness to wow all of us. My commentary aligned up with the judges and even some of the contestants. I hope you see where I'm coming from babe. Please read this in no confrontational way.

I would be shocked to think that WOW just happened to invest having a franchise of Drag Race in the PH if there was little to no Drag culture. She praised many looks in both the first and second episodes. Asking anyone to view the show on a curve is only a hinderance to the shows future and perception of drag from the Philippines.

also corazon's exit line wasn't translated very well. what she said was really not as pointed as "you're all sons of bitches." she said "mga cheche! cheche ng ina niyo!" which is really just playful and did not even contain any swearing. it i do not know how to translate it actually but it could be something like "sissies! you're all sissies of your moms!" like a typical "your mom" joke. "cheche" kind of means "nonsense." corazon cleared it up on an ig live apparently that she used the word to mean "sisters" though. "cheche ng ina niyo" is a watered-down swear. to make it a real swear, it should be "puki ng ina niyo." it's like saying "what the frick" instead of "what the fuck." the "ng ina niyo" has also been used elsewhere in the episodes like the round-up at the end of eps where they say "queen-ang ina niyo." whenever something with "ng/ang ina niyo" pops up, it's a watered down swear from "tangina niyo" (your mom's a whore) or "puki ng ina niyo" (your mom's vagina). also filipino (the language) isn't very gendered. our pronouns are gender neutral. and we only have one word for "child" as in we don't have separate words for "son" or "daughter." so the choice of the word "sons" is weird. it may come off to non-filipinos that corazon just called them men. there's none of that in her exit line at all. it's basically just a playful insult that's very close to but not a swear. so yeah, just a weird translation. corazon wasn't being mean during her exit.

Stop explaining the references for people who dont get it. Filipinos love pleasing foreigners. Stop you guys. If she doesnt get the jokes, the references, thats because she is not the target audience. She is a spectator, an outsider looking in. She is not meant to get all of it. We all get it, we all get what the humour is. We get all the tagalog jokes and they make sense in OUR native tongue. No need to drop an essay explaining the queens and the show. Let them see it and see it for what it is.

i actually appreciate people making reference posts. i don't think it's because "filipinos are starved for validation from foreigners" or that this is just a filipino thing. fans from thailand, spain and france made their respective reference posts as well. it's just the filipinos' time and i think they're rightfully giddy about it. as a filipino, i enjoyed learning about the other international franchises' culture and the nuances of their languages through their natives' reference posting. like i may not fully get why sharonne talking to herself in third person alone in the workroom was funny, but thanks for letting me know, native spanish speaker, that there was more nuance to what she was saying than the subs were letting on. it makes the franchise very rich and is part of why i love the international seasons. the extra cultural context in kudalakorn's fansub of drag race thailand was also very popular, much more well-received than the officiual subs. people just love learning about and sharing their culture.

@@schadenfreudetv3787 i get that. but the way this reviewer was annoyed by the too much energy wouldn't be fixed by stopping filipinos from posting about references, right? i don't think those two things are very related. if this is about my comment on why they were hyped during the palo sebo section, i was just sharing my thoughts and the reasons for why their energy was "justifiable." i wasn't trying to pander to a foreigner.

exactly why her shady remarks upsets me bc these queens have said from the beginning that they didn't have proper jobs prior to filming drag race bc of the closing of nightclubs due to the pandemic. its just too much shade for someone who doesn't really understand how much sacrifices these queens made just so they can make this season happen.
