I'd like to mention that the Antivan Satinalia is clearly based on the Roman christmas celebration of antiquity, called Saturnalia. It also involved a whole week of festivities, gambling and other...more carnal pleasures. For those interested in the similarities - perhaps even yourself, dear Professor? - the channel Invicta has a really good video on the matter. funny you say that, i’m replaying dragon 2 right now. Make sure you unlock all the free DLC content and bonus content (like weapons armor and such) via Dragon Age keep in the career section, under rewards. Virtually all DLC across all 3 games is free now, including collector edition, promotional items and pre-order items

Mages all the way, Libertarian for life! The College of Enchanters needs to be an autonomous faction free from Chantry rule, so that mages can govern themselves and eachother!

People in medival times fought brother against brother for power and influence so its difficult to believe that strategic marriage alliances would make Antiva that safe from invasions for centruires. I can undertand it mattering for a generation or two but for it to be relevant until today is too unrealstic. Why should on expansionist king care if the Antiva royalty have some blood realtions to him from 100 years ago? I think the lore guys at Bioware dropped the ball of this one.

I think it can be seen very similarly to Genoa or Venice, as I believe this was part of its inspiration, and they made a lot of trade deals to keep themselves safe for a long time--of course, there is a lot of nuance and the Ottomans were a constant threat. It is a strange mesh of time periods in Dragon Age, though it seems to be late 1400's--early 1500's for the most part. Political assassinations, careful trade deals, and strategic marriages played a large role throughout history to the point it would keep you safe for a good while. Granted, if someone wanted it enough, they would attack a neighboring country in spite of this. A lot of the history of Thedas is left to the imagination, and you can see the areas where they are still adding to the Lore. For all we know, it could also be there geographic location and the fact that other countries have bigger problems to worry about (The Qunari/Blights).
