What we have here is a time-traveling member of the protagonist's species who travels from a post apocalyptic nightmare to try to prevent the apocalypse, and who shares the same Super transformation of the protagonist and his antisocial, antihero rival. How you can see that as linked to Sonic the Hedgehog is beyond me.

It's not the aesthetics, it's the title and status. Remember, Saiyan society is class based, and they tend to base their hierarchy off of power. Therefore, the only thing higher than being "the Prince/King of all Saiyans" is being THE Super Saiyan of legend. Prior to Goku becoming Super Saiyan, King Vegeta was the most powerful known Saiyan (remember: Broly was still out there at this point). The funny part in all this is the futility of his inferiority complex, because the vast majority of the Saiyans are dead, their planet is debris, and Goku, young Gohan and Future Trunks have ENTIRELY different goals and worldviews. Not a single one of them would have any interest in being Saiyan royalty, even if that was still a thing that mattered. Had Vegeta realized he really has no competition for status, and just focused on getting stronger like Goku does, he probably would have been able to calm and focus himself enough to attain the form earlier.

I agree this could have been a lot more dramatic if Vegeta turned Super Saiyan at the end. It also would have been more dramatic if rather than him winning, you just had to reduce each one by perhaps one health bar, the fluff says Vegeta is losing, then it switches. This makes the humiliation so much greater.
