The culture of dropping characters because of the VA passing away or doing something controversial is a really strange thing to me, honestly. Recasting is so much simpler

Honestly I don’t see this being an issue for DB aside yamcha having a new VA. If they can easily replace dead VA like Bulma’s, Yamcha never appearing in franchise cause of this is near impossible.

If it was up to me, I'd simply recast him. Retiring a character, as you said, is usually done for respect, like when an actor gets sick or dies (think of T'Challa, from the MCU), but if he, by his own admission, f*-ed up like this there is no respect to be shown. Yamcha has no part in this story.

You're super misguided about the thing with Kaiō-sama and Yanami Jōji. Yeah, sure, Kaiō didn't appear much after Yanami's retirement and death shortly thereafter, but his replacement, Tatsuta Naoki (who had been with the franchise since the beginning, having been the voice of Oolong since 1986) took over of Yanami's role of the narrator as well, a role in which he obviously performed for literally EVERY SINGLE EPISODE thereafter. And even then... let's look at some other prominent replacements in the past. After Miyauchi Kōhei's death in 1995, Hiroshi Masuoka took over the role of Kame-sennin/Muten Rōshi in the last bit of Z, the 13th Z movie, and GT (though strangely not in the 10th Anniversary film in 1996). But starting with Kai, Satō Masaharu (who had previously done some minor characters such as King Vegeta, King Cold, Staff Officer Black, Dre, etc) has performed the role and still does so to this day. Or how about Gōri Daisuke, who played, among many others, Mr. Satan, Gyūmaō, Umigame, and Enma-Daiō. All those roles were recast after his suicide in 2010, and in the case of Mr. Satan, he has actually been recasted TWICE. Ebara Masashi (who many fans likely know from Naruto where he famously voiced Might Guy, a similar loudmouth showboat to Mr. Satan) took over the role starting with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot in 2020 after Ishizuka Unshō, who replaced Gōri, died in 2018. Or Suzuoki Hirotaka, the original voice of Tenshinhan, who died in 2006 and had the role taken over starting with Kai by Midorikawa Hikaru, who himself had been with the franchise since 1992 as the voice of No. 16. Like, it's been proven time and time and time again that Tōei will just recast these characters (personally, I have long felt very strongly that none of that should have ever been an issue and that Tōei and Shūeisha should instead have just let Dragon Ball stay over and done with after GT's AMAZING, nigh-perfect ending in 1997, ESPECIALLY considering that Kai and Super have just been absolutely irredeemable trashfires of below average quality at BEST) if anything happens to their voice actors. And if Furuya Tōru does get sacked for this, odds are very good that Yamcha will just be replaced with a different seiyū, NO different than has happened to literally DOZENS of Dragon Ball characters over the past nearly forty years.

Holy Shit, this is insane. I was not expecting to hear this, this morning or hearing ever. As a Yamcha fan, i feel sad for the actor and how he might have ruined any future apperances of Yamcha.

i get they like to do things in respect like king kais voice actor and even in the west some of the spongebob characters of all things but its moronic to have staple characters never show up when a voice can easily be replaced by another voice actor.

There is probably three ways this can go. 1. His apologies get accepted and can continue his career as a voice actor. 2. He get fire, and they replace him with a new voice actor, or AI voice if Japan would ever choose to use AI technology more and more. 3. Some characters he did the voices for get removed from some of the animated series, the other probably gets a new voice actor.

Why would this result in Yamcha being absent in Dragonball anime moving forward? They could easily replace his VA. The character has had such minor impact in recent stories that very few people would notice.

Similar to the King Kai situation is Kingdom Hearts 3. In the Hercules portion of the game, Phil was in the background but didn't have any voice lines. I later found out the Japanese voice actor for Phil, Ichirô Nagai, had passed away and out of respect they never replaced him. They just cut out any voice lines for that character.

The original Bulma voice actress Hiromi Tsuru died suddenly and they got someone else to take over, didn't they? So no problem, they can just get another actor to take over as Yamcha then !! Why worry? No one is irreplaceable !!!

It may only be one episode and a joke one at that, but Kaio did appear in Super past the Battle of Gods. After Zamasu was defeated, that episode with the wishes being made. Kiao wanted to be revived and he didn't end up getting it. Again, just one episode, but he DID appear again.

Damn, this wild. It's good he's taking full accountability for his actions and is working to do better and atone. As far as killing off the character, who knows. They may have or not permanently cut Kaio sama due to the VA passing away. However, the VA food Bulma passed away, and they can't kill off her character, cuz she's too pivotal to the show. So they'll have to recast Bulma.

It would be horrible if Yamcha disappeared he hasn't done much in Super, but he's a great character and an important one from the get go. It was cool to have him around being Yamcha, even thought it's been years since he was used properly in the story. People will have to learn how to differentiate between the character and his VA... Maybe they'll find a new VA for him. It's a shame though, because the original voice is so iconic. Unfortunately the guy really did some horrible things...

Regarding King Kai I know you said he doesn’t show up again after the Battle of Gods arc but what about that one episode that’s after the Goku Black arc but before the ToP arc where Goku finally decides to revive him with the Dragon Balls before a bunch of shenanigans happen doesn’t that one count or no? Also with Yamcha I wonder what this will mean for the Moro arc if that ever gets adapted since at one point Yamcha does fight Moro’s minions and it would suck if Yamcha got cut in a anime version of that arc because of all this.

In the Moro arc Yamcha was apart of the team defending earth. I'm pretty sure he has quite a few bits of dialogue.

In regards to Super, with Toriyama's passing, and not recasting characters(which I agree with), then Dragon Ball probably just needs to come to a close. It makes me sad, with it being my all time favorite comic, story, or any form of media really. But let's be honest, both the anime and the manga have been been lackluster for such a long time. But what's going to happen when Nozawa Masako dies? To my knowledge there has never been another Japanese VA for Goku and what will they do then? The last thing Yamcha ever did storywise was help in the Moro Arc, against the Galactic Prisoners invading Earth. In the DBS Manga. Of which will sadly would not be voiced by him now, if they ever animate it. The last animated Yamcha voicework role he did was for the Super Dragon Ball Heroes Promo anime. Its terrible what Tooru did, but I have to respect he was at least honorable enough to admit he did it and apologize to her and his fans. Unlike some recent examples with other celebrities. Still does not excuse his behavior though. Man this is some terrible irony that Yamcha's voice actor to have been involved in such a scandal. Given Yamcha himself was accused of being a womanizer and unfaithful to Bulma in Dragonball. Despite evidence to the contrary. Now this happens, and its way worse than Yamcha was ever accused of. The one thing I'm concerned about is if sabo's voice actor being fired potentially changes the future scenes in one piece. The one I always wanted to see was Sabo and Cobra in the room with Imu and the Gorosei. Mainly because we get to hear Imus's voice for the 1st time and that we see imu use an actual attack. Not just that but in one piece most characters have a really badass theme for popular antagonists and protagonists when they have a time to shine when they are introduced. I also think its fun to be in the hype of when a cannon event-like scene pops up where the animators go all in with the animation and pacing and also music in the background that isn't a part of the ones that appear regularly in the show.

Most likely Yamcha is gonna be written out or replaced with a new voice actor considering how recasting characters is a rare thing in Japanese media

I can recall King Kai showing up a couple episodes after the Future Trunks arc, when everyone is trying to make a wish on the Dragon Balls, otherwise, yeah ,I can't think of any other episodes where King Kai shows up.

I agree with the recast especially since Diama is coming, in America they had the Broly scandal with the VA and a new VA for Broly came and it didn't take away from the anime. Also in regards to King Kai that's more in honor of him because he was respected, with Yamcha VA he isn't respected now because of this. Also Bulma was recasted because of her death of her VA in Japan. So they could do a recast easier for Yamcha since what he did was dishonorable, than say King Kai.

This makes it really hard for me to rewatch the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, especially with the famous scene of Amuro killing Lalah near the end. It really devastates me that Toru Furuya, an iconic voice actor who did the voice of many beloved anime characters, did something so horrible to someone who loved him and his characters since probably her childhood. I don't see him ever recovering from this.

I think they will probably recast him. He was awlready recast in Saint Seiya a few years back. Yamcha is a way more popular charachter than Kaio-Sama (he has the most memes in the Dragon Ball fandom).

Happy he is at the absolute least coming out to tell what happened. We don’t know if that’s the only things that happened and how much of it is even true. But if what he said is the entire truth I am happy he spoke out and I hope that the Woman is doing ok and that it didn’t cause any harm what he has done.
