It was only supposed to be a casual exploration of an early game area - but apparently the Lands Between has more hiding beneath the surface than I thought possible. There's a world going on, underground.

🥄 One detail i find neat is how when you first find the dragonkin it's crumpled up on the floor in the middle of nowhere like a discarded corpse. This is clearly a person (or WAS a person) who at some point must have had ambitions or goals and who by the time you find them is left empty and basically dead, who completely gave up. Why does that sound so familiar... Also not to spoil anything specific but lofty goals of reaching godhood/immortality and the sad empty shells that are left from those attempts is one of those From Software themes that shows up in Elden Ring too and it's always in equal measure fascinating and depressing.

extremely surprised you didn't mention the wings. the small, bear-bones, shriveled, incomplete wings. it really adds to the feel of someone who attempted to become a dragon, but failed

Interesting that he mentions dragon communion in the same breath which is instead linked to the creation of Magma Wyrms, the implication that the Dragonkin were a hybridised experiment of those who lived in Nokron and Nokstella to take on the power of dragons in a different way but made only a halfway successful fusion of man and drake. The former is very remniscent of Fafnir, going back to the Nordic/Germanic mythology that underpins the theming of Elden Ring… but the cities below the earth are rather… atypical to the world above.

Also Dragonkin Soldiers look like Ancient Dragons while Dragon Communion relies on eating the hearts of Drakes/Non Ancient Dragons.

Its such perfect framing. Anyone familiar with Souls games will know that those elevators can last a while, but it goes on just long enough to make you start to doubt exactly what it is you've found. And then the night's sky opens up impossibly above you and the pristine, ruined towers peek through the crack in the wall, unfurling into an entire world unseen. And then you get killed by a crab.

🥄The fact that this episode came out after the DLC Trailer is scary good timing. Don't worry too much Skyen, you've got to get your brain in order and with new meds to help get your brain in order it'll take a bit for these to come out the way you feel happy releasing them in. Love and Peace Dude.

Maybe the real Elden Ring was the shared experience we made along the way, of being obliterated by the Ancestral railgunners. 23:07 Also, not spoiling anything, but you may want to keep this building in the back of your mind.

Dude, remember, one of the big lessons of these games is perseverance. Yes you fail and lose to a boss, but by failing you learn, by persevering you over come that obstacle. Like most things in life they are not easy, but by persevering you can over come them. Keep up the hard work, your fans route for you.

Just a small little helpful gameplay note: the cat talisman is all but useless in this game. IllusoryWall has a great video explaining it, but TL/DW, all it does is reduce damage for falls between 16-20 meters. Anything shorter than that is always harmless, and anything longer than that is always lethal (unless you're within range of a spiritspring).

🥄Your boss design series is my favorite thing to watch on KZfaq. You put such a tremendous amount of effort into editing them and your analyses and thoughts on the bosses/levels/enemies is enlightening and thought-provoking. We don't care how long the wait is because we know you truly put everything into making them. Thanks for doing what you do!

🥄Another great episode. One of my favorite details about the Dragonkin is the opulent, luxurious belt which once fit a thicker, plumper frame but which now bounces and drags comically through the ground as the soldier crawls around. Miyazaki once said that every monster and enemy in the Souls games should have a certain dignity, but an underrated bit of design often lost on its imitators is that they have a certain comical element too. They're terrifying and powerful and awe-inspiring, but just a little bit ridiculous. Also, take as much time as you need to make the next one! And take care of yourself. I'll stick with this series for as long as it takes to be done.

🥄It'd be a pointless lie to say I didn't wish to see these episodes come out more often, but I'd always rather watch content from people who aren't burning themselves out to do it. You're pretty much the entire reason I started to look at visual design and not just words when I do my own personal theorycrafting in games like this, so you've personally enriched my experience of FromSoft games in particular (albeit not exclusively.)

🥄Scoop myself up another helping of Boss Designs, my favorite! It always bears repeating that this series (back when it was in the middle of DSII) is what got me interested in your channel generally. I would never urge it be made more frequently than you're comfortable delivering because I appreciate and respect the work you put into it too much. The moment of you being a bit flippant and casual giving way to, as you put it, genuine astonishment, is a delight. FromSoftware has always made sweeping vistas and grand scenery surrounding their areas but here it feels they have accomplished something they have wanted to realize for over a decade. For every part of that magnificent view to truly be part of the explorable game-world the player is in.

🥄The Dark Soul and Bloodborne videos you made allowed me to enjoy worlds, characters and lore in games I would never pick up myself. Soulsborn games aren't my cup of tea gameplay wise, that's why I absolutely love what you're doing. I watched through every available Darksouls and Bloodborne playlist on your channel because I enjoy watching you play your way through them and love the extra bits of lore and design explanations through your point of view. It even improved my skill of taking information from character designs in other games too! I'm a huge fan of Soulsborne games now, even though I haven't even played them, and it's because of your content. Even though it takes a while between videos in the Elden Ring series, everytime a new one is uploaded I drop everything I'm doing and take an hour or 2 to watch it. I don't mind waiting a while between episodes!

🥄Skyen, I wish you best of luck with the adhd stuff. As someone who also has Adhd I completely understand the whole inconsistent working ability because, well, I have lived that myself. But, let me discuss the lore I do have for the whole dragons without getting into spoilers too much. There are individuals who have become... akin to dragons, but these aren't quite that, emphasis on the not quite. These dragonkin were made from the outside. Perhaps they once were humans, but their transformation wasn't due to Dragon communion. You will see the conclusion of that within the Ruin-strewn Precipice. The observation that these dragonkin are dragonlike primarily on the outside is quite a good realization I will admit, and one I didn't even realize myself. They transformed via external things, but those who use dragon communion, they transformed *internally.* I also note that these dragonkin look far closer to ancient dragons which are the one's whose corpses are within the communion churches, the result of dragon communion however appears far closer to the modern dragons, complete with their lack of lightning. Do with this information what you will.

🥄 As a fan and fellow ADHDer I sympathize so much with what youre going through and Id like to encourage you (as much as an internet rando can) to stick with the path youre taking, investing in sustainable living with it is going to be the best thing for you long term, as Ive learned the hard way as well. Much love on that front. As for the episode, loved it -- I do want to say that as much as VaatiVidya is useful as a lore resource, and lore is very fun, I get something different from your boss designs videos -- the way you build a "collage" of the canon by reading theme, context, and subtext differs from people consolidating and theorizing about canon. Both have value, but dont sell yourself short -- your boss designs videos are fulfilling a different niche to those and it is a valuable and under-served niche. I'll come back for every episode. No matter how long they take. ❤

I find Skyen to be super complementary to the Tarnished Archeologist. They are both looking at the storytelling through visual design of the game, trying to take it at its word, if you will. Archaeologist does the architecture and sets, Skyen does the character designs and just enough of the stages and sets to tie both together into a really coherent message for me, a dialogue between the ancient, modern history, and the present in the Lands Between. And also I agree with you, I loved Skyen on his own before I discovered that channel. He offers something that no one else does in a way no one else could, and the approach is super refreshing in its critical read.

So he's actually up standing there because he's being guarded by the demihumans. Kenneth is REALLY intereting character that at first is introduced to the player in a way to make us think he's shallow. He's probably one of the most open minded and big hearted characters in the game, a man willing to work with tarnished and an ally of the largely persecuted Demi Humans.

Love the reaction to discovering the underworld. It really is such a jaw defining revelation and I image a major turning point that redefines the scope and scale of the game for most people. The notion that not only is there everything above, but a whole second world beneath it all. It just sorta begs so many questions. How deep does it all go? Could there be even more further down? What about up? Could there be a third world in the sky? Maybe even whole other dimensions with no clear connection to the world? The game never really quite fully realizes on any of those concepts, but in this singular moment, the possibilities seem endless.

🥄Hi Skyen, It's always an wonderful delight to see this series pop up. Along with your character design shorts on League skins and Pokemon, I'm quick to make some time to watch through how you see the details I would usually gloss over. Your ability to see those things is truly astounding and I get inspired to try to look for them myself! I myself have some minor dyslexia and disruptive depression, and for a while I avoided, even feared, medication, because I was afraid of taking something to turn me into someone I'm not. I became so comfortable with my flaws, regardless of how detrimental they were, that I thought they were what made me who I am. Only when I realized that those flaws were actually inhibiting me from being everything I'm supposed to be did I realize that a medication didn't change me to someone I'm not, but stopped the things that were stopping me from being me. I hope that made sense. Anyways, hearing you ask for support is an incredible signal of strength and humility, and I'm happy to support you, even if it's just a little bit. I may disagree with you on some things, but you remind me of a close friend of mine, and how our differences don't drive us apart. I have so much respect for you that I love to listen to your ideas, I hope that would translate in person. It's so cool to hear perspectives that I don't normally consider, I am humbled by your craft. If it takes a while for you to make videos, then it'll take a while for me to watch them 🙂 Be well, and never stop doing what you love, even if it means taking a break.

🥄An interesting aspect of the hollowed out chest is that it helps create uncertainty about if these were originally dragons or not. If the dragonkin were born as dragons, they would have dragonhearts to collect after defeating them. But this thing doesn't have a heart at all. Did it once have a dragonheart which someone stole for a dragon communion ritual, or did it have a human heart which rotted away as it lay decaying, yet never truly dying?

🥄 Gotta say, aside from the analysis which is always great to listen to, I really enjoy the comedic editing every time - the sniper sounds, the Indiana Jones boulder, the MGS ladders. Always brings a smile to my face when the subtle humor is present

An amazing episode as always! The sniping edits really made smile XD I'm glad you're trying to find a way to do these whenever you can instead of burning yourself out. Your own health always comes first and I hope you can go back on meds soon 🥄

Man either Skyen has just hit the ring jackpot or saw the dlc announced and grinded this video to completion. Either way I hope the popularity gets this video the attention of the algo gods.

I'll be here, Skyen. You've gone up there as one of my favorite creators since smashing my way through your videos. Take the time you need on this series! Edit: I reiterate. Don't stress over it. If you release an episode a week, a month, six months, or even years. If you're inconsistent about releasing or push yourself to do it like clockwork. You are okay. You are fine. You do amazing work, but don't push yourself too hard for other people's benefit. 🥄🍴🥣

I would like to point out something I noticed, and that is the Dragonkin Soldier’s spine - or rather, what looks to be a spine lying on his back, attached to him by more strips of cloth, but sticking visibly out, especially the tailbone, like it was once separate. It adds, I think, in addition to those stubby wings, credence to the theory that they wore dragon skins.

🥄 Just like another comment said; taking your time and being inconsistent with uploading are not wrongdoings; we aren't "owed" anything, and it really is just like we're here to appreciate your passion and rambling as it overlaps with our interests. I'm never upset with when (or when not) videos are uploaded, just amazed by all the content and knowledge both in the field of character design, but also of your opinions on the world, on people and groups, and I'm learning a shit ton every time. It only saddens me to see the struggle and guilt behind it and as I've grown to learn that in me that is the disability that is ADHD, it's just a real shame to see you struggle with it without having known about it (BOY, the guilt, shame and self-loathing!). So you joining this journey too of learning to live and deal with that is really really cool, and I'm glad you're here to be such an inspiration. Absolutely best of luck in your journey!

Great video, as always, Skyen! I really empathise with you, as I'm at what sounds like exactly the same point in my ADHD realisation journey. Learning to ride the waves of productivity when they come and not to feel too much like I'm failing when I just can't bring myself to act. These videos are always a treat and a very much appreciated gift of your time and efforts in making them. Wishing you the best! 🥄

:spoon: KZfaq isn't letting me actually put the spoon in. I hope you get half as much joy from the creation of these videos as I get from watching'em. Take your sweet-ass time, drink deep of Elden Ring - I have to consume it 2nd hand until my new PC comes in, and your analysis enhances everything about the viewing experience.

🥄 I’m not here because I need a full series, I’m here because each an every episode is first entertaining and then insightful. (Love the constantly changing censor noises, and I absolutely lost it at the Shrek PNGs) The episodes that already exist are enough, and any new episodes just feel like a gift. Not expected nor deserved, but greatly cherished. Best of luck through the medication process.

As someone who also suffers from ADHD, I completely understand your feeling about not being consistent. I was fortunate, or not depending on how you look at it, to have my ADHD diagnosed early in my childhood. So I have had many years to adjust to medication, habits, and understanding myself. It is not an easy process and I appreciate you taking the time to let yourself adjust. I have watched all of you boss designs series and I love them all. I sometimes come back just to rewatch a series because of how smart and genuine you are when it comes to trying to analyze and understand the extremely deep and complex lore of these games that we love. You show how much you love these games in every episode and I am always looking forward to the next one. Take care of yourself, give yourself time, and understand that while it is hindering, it will not stop you. Thank you for all the great work that you do and I wish you the best of luck in your journey.

If I recall right a lot of fromsofts dragons, especially the Dragon God from Demon Souls has double jaws in its mouth, so the Dragonkin Soldier double mouth could be an homage to that, but the idea of the dragon being taken on almost as a mantle is incredibly fascinating.

🥄 These are always a joy to watch, I chuckled a lot at the snipers locking on, some very good editing there. I also can't believe that with hundreds of hours in this game and dozens more listening to people talk about it I have never seen nor heard about the Dragonkin's cape like that. Another fascinating detail that's going to have me wondering from here on. Regarding your post-credits commentary, maybe it would help to know that I don't sit here expecting a new episode on a timely schedule? To be honest I sort of forget this series exists between new releases, they're always a treat to be sure but I don't think anyone here is expecting the world of you. Take all the time you need and we'll all keep watching for as long as you are enjoying making them.
