Video from a farm in Southeast Darke County Ohio laying field drainage tile in two different field. In this video I got through the process of field drainage as they install a main drainage tile then lay the smaller drain lines across the field.

I was 13 years old during my Christmas Vacation in 1972 and spent 6 days working with one of those tile trenching machines. It pulled a wagon with a pallet of clay tile 4x12 in. There was a rack in the boot behind the digging wheel were you placed the drain tile bottom up were there were 4 rows with 4 holes in each row on the bottom half of the tile. Being in the thumb of Michigan we had to clean the machine every night so the dirt and mud would not freeze to the trench. We did the same thing as the guy with the shovel but on both sides. This was to put enough cover so tile clay tile would not freeze because we were not back filling to spring. KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING. Versatiles are some of my favorite tractors and I really like there new colors.

The farmers in this video are top notch! I live a couple miles away from them. My family also farms in the area and have had them ditch a few of our fields as well. I would love to apprentice with them and learn. Great video thanks Mike.

Mike - Another great video showing how tiling is done. I had never seen this operation before, but had relatives in Nebraska who had it done on their farm. I understood how it works, but now know how the tile lines are put in place - simple, but very effective. Thanks for sharing this.

...... and it's all Old Codgers doing the work! Never too late to be a Star on Mike's Channel! Thanks Mike! I'm really interested in that Soil Auger for back-filling - never seen before -any good for Hi-Speed snow-clearance, maybe with Plastic or Bristle Auger? Would be a Beast on front of my Hydro Unimog Wish my drainage was as easy as that - couldn't even THINK of pulling those machines through our stoney or slippery clay soils. Have a great Easter, despite our social problems.

Mike , Speicher made the 600 with in line 6 cylinders, 6060 trencher with 318 Chrysler gas motor. Then came 6160 ( in this video) they put 471 Detroit motor and Browns hydrostatic drive for the traction. Then came 7160 with heavier frame the finally 7160 with the digging drive housing went up and down on the up rights rail I beams with the digging frame.

Worst mistake CIH ever did was drop the cummins engine from alot of their tractors. JD still uses cummins in their biggest HP line. But the JD engine itself are extremely relieable. The 404 was a 10k hour engine that was very successful.

The bidirectional tractor is a neat machine but a small bulldozer would run circles around it backfilling and it could double as an anchor point for the trencher winch.

Ideally, that backfiller on the bi-directional, would run the other way. This would allow the backfiller to follow right behind the wheel trencher, since the wheel trencher usually puts the dirt out on the left side. As it is now, the wheel trencher has to go always before the backfiller has enough open trench to make it worth running.

How does the run off effect the water quality down stream? When you top dress with liquid manure? Could you hook the drain tile to a water tank for storage and future use in a drought situation? And there by keeping your farm runoff to a minimum. Cause when driving by it reminds me of a straight pipe up a holler in Kentucky and those are bad.

I am guessing this tile is not perforated, as I do not see any pea gravel going in the shield to surround the tile line.. I am guessing the wheel trencher is USA manufactured because it is running a Detroit Diesel.. Maybe a 453.. No mistaking that screaming Jemmy.

Soils with higher clay content do not require filter and should last many generations if done properly. Lighter soils or sand require a filter or sock on the tile and this ensures the system doesn’t plug up with silt and sand.

from France: your drains are very big, why? , we drain with 32'', drains 60''. What slope do you have? because you have little relief... Your slicer is in fine earth, if there were rocks or limestone or flint, the knives at us would melt like butter in the sun (we put 1/2 buckets carbide/tungsten) and the drainer would jump like a goat! , for plugging a bull with an angled blade is enough. What are your coupling clips, Otherwise good work. French farmer vetérans drainer
