There's a calf with a large abscess that needs cleaned out so we better get to it! In this video we also move some mineral around, fix a water tank float, and hear some history on the ranch!

Great video! Sometimes I've seen vets make a bit larger hole, stick their finger in and break up any solid pus and pull out the clots of pus to help healing. Best wishes to you and your family!

i have watched alot of these saw it differently done they shave area an clean with betadine then the opening is bigger an they make sure the stuff comes out skin cells tissue’s you pulled one peice of but it plugs it up so all infection drains out completely an so it doesn’t heal it will go down but lot of times close back up make another abcess watch someother farm videos doing it you will see better an get it all out completely drained then rinse out with peroxide betadine mix then give shot of antibiotics an it should heal fine. just letting you know But i enjoyed the video just suscribed ! I had a old man vet show me a truck once, he would use a smallish diameter rope and knot it to make it a slip rope so as you pull on it the rope tightened, and when he would incise a abscess/cyst he would put the rope on the base of the abscess/cyst between it and where it attaches to the skin and when he cut it he would pull on the rope to tighten it squeezing the contents out making sure he would get as much out without absolutely having to make it bigger then as he would tighten it more he would gradually roll it down pulling all tho contents down towards the incision opening. Then he could remove it flush it out and be finished. He explained it to me like a reverse tourniquet. Pretty cool actually considering it was the only time I have ever seen it done out of all the video on the internet I’ve never seen it done again. I guess it just made giant abscesses/cyst and moving animals easier to work with.

I prefer to make the entry larger as Kendra says. The draining is quicker and relief more obvious. I usually give a shave then puncture. wash out, sterile water with antiseptic. Jab of antibiotic in rump. wound empty, calf quieter, mother happy. check regularly. keep in closer paddock. Save on petrol. leave with tucker and water. Amen.

Well true but I watch a ton of these and I didn't see any sac or other material come out. Not sure it was the most expediant way even in a calf. And towards the end you had a short f/I. It needs to be drained again IMO.
@phyllisannecarroll9183
@phyllisannecarroll9183 Жыл бұрын
@@lesliemandic9673ou aren’t going to get a sac out of these because it’s not a sebaceous cyst. These are a result of an injury such as a poke with a stick or bite that causes this and it grows between the skin not in a pore. It’s the livestocks way of surrounding the infection to keep it contained in one area. Usually it continues to grow until the skin gets thin enough and the hair starts to shed and then it’ll pop and drain itself. Ranchers usually take care of this for their animals because they get huge.

PA here. After cleaning abscess with betadine or chlorhexidine use an eleven blade to open the abscess. At least 1cm opening. Besides pus, there is dead tissue in abscess, it needs to come out. Irrigate with sterile water till water comes clear. I would take a specimen from inside abscess for culture. He may need abc.

@@behindthewire My suggestion would be to have a veterinarian with you when you drain an abscess like that one. Abscesses that large can tend to have a sac under the skin that holds all that crappy goo. That sac will have to be removed as well so that the abscess doesn't come back later on. How do I know this? I grew up on a farm. Something like this we always had the vet come out to drain for us. There was always a sac that had to be removed after draining so it wouldn't come back. Eventually the vet taught us how to remove the sacs when we improved the size of our herd.

One of my mentors on my surgical rotation always stressed that “You never let the sun set on pus!” An abscess should always be drained as soon as possible. Don’t delay for another day. Was really good practice to irrigate with the hydrogen peroxide after the drainage. It is also good to have some type of long probe to break up any pockets that may have formed inside the abscess. Good job on the I and D (incision and drainage.)

I live in Denison, TX and Doc Holliday had a dentist office downtown for around 20 years. Every April, there is a Saints and Sinners event with a parade celebrating Doc Holliday. They have a carriage ride that gives the history of downtown and Doc Holliday. Ike Eisenhower's birthplace is here and Sully Sullenberg, the pilot that landed the plane in the Hudson River, was born here and learned to fly at the Denison airport. A lot of history in this little town. Our house was built in 1923 but the houses around us were built in the 40s and 50s. I love the history of your place even if it's a tall tale, lol. Just because someone has a different opinion doesn’t make them right….and even more so in the comment section…. We all do things differently which doesn’t make either person right or wrong.. You are never going to please all the people all the time and just ignore the haters that have nothing positive to contribute…… Content is a slow boil so keep with it …. Love watching your wonderful life on a ranch. Check out Enoch the Vet, he drains abscesses the best. I’ve watched many vet KZfaq videos, grew up on a farm in Illinois, worked with horses most of my life. Assisted an equine vet and other vets in multi animal fields. What I have noticed is the drainage hole needs to be a fairly wide cut. The fibrinogen gets pretty large and requires a larger drain hole. Also Enoch the Vet does blunt dissection up into the abscess to break apart compartments. May Jesus bless you and your ranch!
