Draining Major Street Flooding, Multi Street Flood Caused By Beaver Clogged Culvert Uncut

When I ask what the spotlight under the traffic light is, most people say emergency vehicle detector but I found out it is just a light. The BigE Fair is right next to this bridge and a traffic cop stands there at night. This flood was caused by a beaver dam blocking a culvert causing flood waters to overflow onto the street, clearing drains of debris brought over by storm serge helping it drain faster, took nine hours to drain #Flood #Unclogging #Clog #Drain #culvert #beaver #dam #massive #major #street #road #flooding #heavy #rain #splashing #whirlpool

The mass DOT is over extended with our infrastructure, and some of it's so old we don't even know that some of it existed. And it's like that with every Massachusetts infrastructure agency. A couple years back my dad was doing work on a public building in Boston. And he needed to replace some high voltage component. So Edison came out and were supposed to only shutdown the street for about half an hour. Well they disconnected the power and something failed upstream and half of Boston lost power. And it took them about 6 hours to even find the problem, and another 8 hours to fix it because everything was so old they had to redo it. Though in the past couple years everything has gotten a lot better, eversource has done a really good job mapping out the grid so we don't lose power for as long as we used to. I did some work on the MBTA trying to redesign some of the systems to improve efficiencies. I had a couple buddies working for the DOT as engineers and they actually discovered a couple bridges that the DOT forgot existed cause they were so old they predated the paperwork. They're also in the process of redoing all the guard rails to make them safer during collisions.
@mfk12340
@mfk12340 4 жыл бұрын

Those car parts you're coming across are fairings that are mounted on a car's undercarriage - they're meant to act as splash guards to prevent water from coming up into the engine compartment and also help a little bit with aerodynamics and fuel economy. They're just held on with clips usually so they sometimes come loose or get ripped off when a car goes through deep water at speed. Happened to me a few years ago.

@@SuperPickle15 One of said Audi drivers here.. the plastic gets brittle over age. ESPECIALLY here in FL where the humidity and air just destroys most plastics. Had my guard literally just fall off my car when going down the highway. The road rangers hate those undercarriage sheilds here specifically because they just get destroyed here and fall off all the time for them to need to clean up.

Considering the crazy OSHA laws these days, there's probably some 'operational safety training certificate' the DOT needs to complete before they are allowed to use a rake.. I'm a qualified carpenter, and a number of years ago I did some volunteer work with a historic railway organisation near where I lived, before they would let me use any hand tools I had to sit a safety course which took and hour and a half.. and a further 2 and a half hour course before I could touch, let alone use, any power tools, I was 32 at the time.. It's just nuts!

You are missing something. Telling the drivers to slow down is very much a good thing. Never was it said that that is "all they did" .. I know this area, it is extremely difficult to deal with after a downpour. I have driven through it a number of times. The geographical issues in this specific case are very unique. You have the Mass Pike, 90, 5, 10, all major road ways converging in this area. Not to mention it is a major road between Springfield and Holyoke/Northampton/Amherst. Anyway.. I'll shut up now..

I had cleared out a couple of clogged drains on my street at night during a hurricane (south Florida) in 2000-2001. Probably about 18 inches of water, it was half way up my driveway. Pretty interesting being out in the pitch black of night (power was out) in 100+ MPH wind. Thankfully had a neighbor with a flashlight. Huge whirlpools after they were clear.

Also, when he’s out in a location not in the city he needs a personal location beacon. If anything happens he can be found, and with the push of a button emergency services are notified and it transmits his location to them constantly. I wear one when I go on hikes here in Arizona.

You're in my state and this will be a long comment. I was an inspector for a large utility company and my job included monitoring construction near our lines. I'm happy to say i was apart of the largest drainage system in my city's history. It started at the ocean shoreline and continued threw ending by one lake and a pond. It took the rain water coming off every str and sent it to a large main line that ran to the ocean. Every str that had the main line was excavated to a depth of 40 ft at some points. Then new sewerage, water, and gas mains were replaced. The main line had a small incline starting at the ocean with a 10 ×14 ft culvert and it reduced a little at certain locations where it split off. These locations they constructed a large clean out pit about the size of a 2 story single family home. A large square concrete chamber to put equipment into the draines in the future. Every str drain was connected with a round section going to the top with acess by manhole cover. Sidestreets and pipes going off to catch basins also connected this way. After they finished for the day the workers would leave a way to access the main line and i would take my son and freinds down for a walk. One section was pushed under house in a diag direction and connected to the main line and people didn't even know this. It took years to complete but im privileged to know i was a big part of this. One engineer told me if you enter at the manhole by the pond. It would be a ride all the way to the beach and not advisable. You could also drive a car in the main line. Stay safe and don't run up to every whirlpool so quick. A leak in any section would show this way
