While I loved Simon and Garfunkels version as I heard it only by them alone. But since listening to this artist I heard the emotions in the words. I could feel as he was feeling. Disturbed brought the power of the song out for everyone to see and enjoy. One of those rare artists who can convey the emotions in a song. Powerful. Yes he has grit and power but he also puts his whole heart into it. Magnificent.

David Draiman's voice is a gift to us all. I can't imagine hearing that song, and not being stunned by the power, beauty, control, accuracy, frequency range, and dynamic range and versatility of THAT VOICE. It's almost supernatural it blows me away every time I hear this song.

This is an excellent rendition of Paul Simon’s song. What makes this song so special is that it was written in the mid sixties and is still relevant to this day. In fact the poignant aspect of Paul’s message was ahead of it’s time when you consider the advances in electronic communication and the negative cause and affect of the influence and impact it has on our society.

This is a very awe inspiring version of a rather old song; vocally, musically and emotionally engaging. Every time someone views and or hears this song they are taken aback; individually determining from deep within (their interpretation) of what they've just experienced. That my friends is the power of this great performance and reimagining of this timeless song!! ~Bravo!! Here is a link to some history of this 1963 song >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sound_of_Silence .

I happened to turn over to Conan just as he was introducing the group and the song they were going to sing. I have listened to many other groups sing on late night shows, usually turning the channel in disapointment. I don't know if it is the poor quality of sound stage or the groups do not bring their A game. So, this night, like many others, I started to listen with skepticism. I had not heard of this band before. Well this little country girl was soon educated by these burly powerful guys. The music was rich and of perfect pitch and tempo. And David! He pronounced every syllable completely and oh so clearly. He poured hid heart, soal, lifeblood into it. I was brought to tears. This was a true theatrical performance worthy of the Broadway stage. I repeated the song a dozen times and I just heard more and more beautifully dark and gut wrenching meanings hidden within the words. So, I searched to see if they had a video recording... and they did...

Excellent review, thank you so much. My feelings are that Paul Simon was an incredible visionary... David Draiman just took his amazing lyrics and sang them for the 21st century audience, exposing how lost and shallow we have all become. “‘Fools,’ said I, ‘You do not know, Silence, like a cancer, grows, hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you,’ But my words, like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells, of silence.” (Paul Simon)

A "pretty good song" can easily be ruined by covers. A true, top-echelon classic song like this can easily shed the bad covers and be perpetually reintroduced through the good ones. How much more variety can you ask for than "folk duet with a guitar," "pop a cappella band," and "metal vocalist with full orchestra featuring tympani"? My own appreciation broadens and grows, but the song itself doesn't need anyone's appreciation. The song itself lives on and on, untouched. Thank you for this reaction. You took me back to the first time I watched Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence"--which is also the first time I heard Disturbed. David Draiman's power and control are a killer combination.

Two comments I see on almost every reaction to this: 1. The original song was like a warning while the Disturbed version was anger that the warning wasn't heeded. 2. Apparently the producers on Conan added some auto-tune to this performance because the singer had been ill, and the singer was so angry about this decision that he walked out of an interview with them. (I haven't seen a source or evidence for this story it is just something I see in the comments of every reaction.)
@Mel_ForReal

And they're both bullshit. If everyone is so worried about the "auto-tune" scandal, watch the original video. I've been listening to David Draiman's voice for over 20 years and he's NEVER used autotune.
@hisbean
@hisbean 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mel_ForReal No one said HE chose to use it. What people have stated, is that the SOUND GUYS (running the show) chose to use it. That is why he was supposedly angry about it. They did it, without asking him.
@Mel_ForReal
@Mel_ForReal 4 жыл бұрын
his-bean I understand that. What I’m trying to say, very badly I guess, is that David is a full Baritone with a 4+ octave range and while not classically trained he did train to be a Cantor so he he has superb control of his instrument. Many people in the comments are making it sound as if the only way he could have sung that song so beautifully was with the help of auto tune which is simply not true. Disturb’s “A Reason to Fight” is another example of his range and beauty.
@craigwoodward8455
@craigwoodward8455 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mel_ForReal You are correct, but it was CONFIRMED that autotune was used. And as what you have said is also true, it is likely that david would not like said autotune, and would in fact have been angry at its inclusion and thus this ads credence to the story that he was pissed.

I grew up on Simon & Garfunkel's version of this song, & there has been a few singers & bands that have done this cover, yet nobody has done it better then Disturbs version.......I may also venture to say, I enjoy this version better, only because the message that Simon & Garfunkel were trying to get across, is much stronger and clearer in this version! The original by Simon & Garfunkel, was a warning of what was to come, if we did not change our ways, & Disturbed's version, is anger, because we did not heed the warning....... ❤ One of the best covers in my opinion ❤️

Very nice honest commentary on all of the renditions of this song and its "re-birth". I will say I do enjoy the live version by David better than the video, it is so much more moving than the video. To see a voice on loan from God so masterly played I can understand why Paul Simon was so moved to reach out to David after this performance. To be praised so highly from the original creator of the song could only have happened by seeing the pure emotion on David's face in this epic performance. Disturbed is good with the Gritty stuff as well, but how would they do with say "Imagine" a Beetles song like "Yesterday"? Hmmm?

I'm sure it's already been said, but David was sick that day and running a fever. The original has been one of my favorite songs since it came out back in the 60's. That said, this to me is now the penultimate version of the song. Even Paul Simon reached out to David and congratulated him on this cover, something he had never done before.

Thanks for reacting to this. I love their video for this. I have trouble deciding if I like Disturbed or PTX's version best. It's almost not fair to compare them. Disturbed's version is more angry and PTX's is hopeful (not talking about anyone else comparing them, just me). There's another version I like, not sure if you've seen it. Peter Hollens and Tim Foust from Home Free do a decent job, but IMO not as dynamic as the others. A bit closer to the original.

I truly love Pentatonix,and have listened to them for a number of years. That being said, TO ME, their cover of this sounded like they were almost trying to do Disturbed's version of the song. They did well, but it was not one of my favorites, from them. No matter how many times I listen to Disturbed's version, I still get tingle's, and hold my breath as he does the build up. I just don't get that from PTX. As I said, they did a good job, but TO ME, it just doesn't compare.

In answer to @brentoni my original comment was I've listened to so many reactors share their thoughts on this song, be it the original, Disturbed's version or PTX. I have come to the conclusion that Simon & Garfunkel's version was the WARNING, before the the event. Disturb's version was, this is what you get for not heeding the warning and Pentatonix version is... 'here we are. You made your bed, now sleep in it'. Just a personal analogy on the 3, let's say, most popular versions out there? There is also another cover of this with Peter Hollins and Tim Faust. At the end the 'still' is the same as the original artwork on the album cover. Great reaction as usual.

Some other commenters suggested that Simon & Garfunkel version was a warning about where our culture was changing for the worse. Disturbed version was angry that what was warned about has come to pass - there is almost a sense of betrayal and outrage in the arrangement. PTX is maybe more hopeful? Just 5 different people coming together to make beautiful harmonies. Maybe they showcase what we have potential to do if we come together.

Even when I am able to think of a singer who might have a similar range to Draiman in this song, I draw a blank trying to think of one who is capable of transitioning into the metal vocals we hear him hit during the song's climax. Group Question: When was the last time you heard a singer with such range displaying so many in one song (singers/songs/links)?
