i learned how to draw more fluid poses this way: i took a break from art for a while, only drawing what was simple, mainly doodling in class. i would draw stick figures, except with bare minimum anatomy; rectangles for arms and legs. if i were to bend the limbs, i would just curve them(kind of like how lavendertowne does it). as i began to enjoy art again, i applied this "curvy" nature to some more realistic anatomy. although less realistic, it appeared much more fluid! if you were to do this, i would suggest drawing a curved line first, then trying to draw your figure on top of that, following the line; maybe try doodling cartoonish, squiggly anatomy first to get the hang of it. quick gesture studies can help a lot too!
@catphin8495
@catphin8495 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that advice! Looking back at my drawings, I realized that the only parts where I let the limbs bend and curve a little were at the actual joints. I really like lavendertowne’s art too btw!

I really like your note about anticipation and follow through. From reading a lot of manga I've noticed that even really wonky poses can be completely fine as long as there is a good anticipation before it. The right context makes the pose.

Not to be an art professor at heart but my biggest tip for it is, honestly, do a hell of a lot of gesture drawing. Look at real life people and use pen/marker so it's permanent and can keep you from overthinking

i find it funny how i managed to draw such cool poses before bc i was lazy to sketch before i learned anatomy, i wasn't exactly the best artist, but i was excellent at copying i would see many artists and analyze the hands, the body and all that and i would implement that into my artstyle i was, essentially, *learning in reverse*

I think the key to finding the line of action for every dynamic or exagerated pose is practicing. Like, drawing lots of curves, imagining what would their body and action be, and then create some poses for that one curve. I mean, if you draw a curve, use that same curve for one or two or three different poses, and do this with more curves. That would be the way to get better at body language for dynamism... I think.

The main problem I have when drawing something dinamic is that I`m thinking about the shapes and anatomy. Though my art style is more like a cartoon one, I still think about everyting following anatomy because if it isn`t, the art will look really weird and wrong. Thanks to you and to this video (especially the part starting from 7:34 ), I`ll try it to look more simple so it will be easier to follow the motion line. (I overthink every time I draw and usually get no joy from what I`m doing and that`s a problem. Big problem ''': ) )

If you do it right, you can definitely draw the action Say it was an action comic with that punch A cool big frame could be the fighter not with his arm fully stiff but outstretched as it connects with the other characters face and the puncher’s other arm is somewhat swinging I think you could still convey movement if you do it right

I'm an artist who draws animals way more often than people, and man I love line of action in animals! Especially with the tails of reptiles... you can do so much with it! In fact, I learned line of action drawing very early on because of my interest in drawing animals and plants over people. I rarely sketched anything back then because I simply didn't need to. But now that I'm trying to learn humanoid figures, I have to sketch SO MUCH. Although one thing I've noticed is that, when I sketch a humanoid figure, I still don't rely heavily on shapes apart from the joints. I use circles to mark the head, joints, and hips, but everything else I connect with simple lines. Like markers for proportion and line of action. One thing I still need to get the hang of is perspective shortening on figures though. That's always been a struggle of mine with or without shape sketching.

I have been making art for 20+ years and starting to get back into making a comic I was working on as a teenager has made me realize my dynamism in my posing isn't strong. This is an excellent guide back through my fundamentals. Something interesting to me is that this approach to art is very similar to learning an instrument like guitar. You want to learn your box shapes and your theory so you can memorize note placement, but you'll rarely find the fluency you desire if you don't let yourself explore out of those boundaries whilst still keeping them in mind.
