I know what you mean about that brilliant yellow green of maple blossoms. They don't look real, and yet there they are fluffed all over the trees and filling up the street when they fall before the first leaves come in. I think they are my favorite flower!

Nice, I always start with the brightest tones, with yellow, but it's great to see that I can use black first. It's been a challenge but I like the results!

Yeah, it really can be done both ways and everyone has their own preference, but I have found that laying the shadows in first works well for my style. I don't usually jump to black immediately though, I use dark greens first and then bring in black later if needed to darken my darkest shadows. And even then I put more green over the black so it doesn't get too flat.

This was very helpful. Can you do more quick studies like these? I am new to your channel and I love your art work and the reviews you give on the different mediums. I find these quick studies help beginner artists to take an easier approach to a subject that otherwise might feel intimidating.

I'm gonna use that trick of the OMS in the waterbrush! I always thought it would somehow eat up the plastic or damage the brush. Do you let it in or do you rinse the brush when you're done ?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 4 жыл бұрын
I leave it in there, I have been using it that way for years now, same brush, no issue. I only use that brush for OMS and nothing else, and I have other water brushes that I use for water. You just have to be careful filling it, I recommend wearing gloves and using a mini funnel. If you have a container that you usually keep OMS in, I recommend filling it over that, so any excess goes in there, and can be recycled and so that its not going down the drain.

@@CautionArtistatPlay thank you for replying. As i use a fountain pen inks I use a syringe or a dropper to wake my watercolors up. So I'll probably use that. It is a great set for plain air sketching ... in the garden

Isn’t the pencil you used to sketch your image graphite? If so, doesn’t your CP markings get muddy?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a regular graphite mechanical pencil, but the colors didn't get that muddy. I used a regular pencil this time so the sketch would show up more easily on camera. The lines are a lot darker than I would normally make them too, for the same reason. I wasn't too worried about smearing here because I wanted a more natural look and wasn't going for strait vibrancy. This really was for demonstration purposes though and was a quick sketch exercise, not a finished piece. I work differently for my finished work. Normally, I don't sketch directly on my drawing paper. Typically, I sketch my preliminary outline in graphite on cheap paper, so it's easier to erase and I can rework as much as I want without damaging my good paper. Then I use chalk pastel in a color that matches the piece I am working on to transfer my initial sketch to my good paper. That way I don't have to worry about graphite getting mixed in with my colored pencils and I am not damaging my good paper during the sketch process.
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 4 жыл бұрын
I should also add that there are times where for certain subjects, like less detailed landscapes, that I personally know I won't need to erase as much, and I will freehand right on to my drawing paper. In that case I will use either a pastel pencil or colored pencil that matches the piece I am doing. They also make mechanical pencils with colored led instead of graphite that I like to use for preliminary sketches.

@@CautionArtistatPlay After done sketching use a kneaded eraser to remove some of the graphite from the paper.
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm aware that I could lighten it with a kneadable eraser. I almost never use graphite for my preliminary outline. In this video the only reason I chose graphite was so that the sketch would be more obvious on camera, which is also why I didn't lighten the sketch. For the work I sell, I use the procedure that I mentioned above, which I have talked about and shown in many of my other videos.

Yeah, I had a hard time placing the camera for this one, when I placed it off to the side the proportions were thrown off, I will have to figure out something different for next time.
