They literally tell you Ranni's name in the opening cutscene, you know the funny "AAAAALL KNOWING"... that cutscene, its basically both a hit list for who you gotta kill/steal great runes from, and a heads up for, "Hey, these are all the really well known gods a celebrities of this world that everyone knows about." If anything the Renna problem is the opposite, the player should immediately go "Wait, nah, you're that blue god lady from the cutscene", because they already spoiled it. But canonically, she tells all random tarnished she meets shes Renna the Ice Witch because she IS a god, who IS well known for having a great rune, and IS also technically a fugitive for orchestrating the murder of both herself and her brother and wanting to fight the gold order. Now you might be like, some disguise, how was I suppose to know the ice witch was really the god ice witch... to which I'll remind that that blue puppet body is not her original body. Ranni wasn't known as the uwu cute blue ice waifu, She was a tall ass, red hair, empyrean and thats likely how people remembered her. You're just assuming that everyone knows Ranni is the blue lady because after you learn about it the only other people who talk about Ranni are literally her confidants. So yes, its dumb as a mystery for the player but its not useless storytelling. This was only like a half intensity rant, if you read that at full intensity I'm sorry.

The thing about the exposition bit is that there are MULTIPLE characters who will tell you how major characters are related and what their whole deal is. People just didnt notice.

I would like to point out that, famously, there is an expository NPC in the base game. He's not a cleric, but he is there. His name is Sir Gideon Ofnir the All Knowing. It is that man's life's work to spill all the tea. He's basically your in-game history professor. It's just most people never showed up for class.

Gideon is functionally an expository cleric already Also, the reason why Ranni introduces herself like that is because she's basically a terrorist fugitive whose originally body was destroyed and her mind transferred into an artificial one that was modeled on a lady named Renna. I feel like it's reasonable to expect her to introduce herself like that considering her circumstances. I'm sure Ripley would have told you that.

My impression was that Ranni was going by Renna because she committed the crimes that set the stage for the games current events. I think it's supposed to come off as irrational behavior unless you dig a little deeper with Rogier's quest early on. Most people miss that detail because it's part of one of Elden Ring's notoriously easy to miss NPC quests, where you have to talk to Rogier and Fia multiple times in multiple situations before speaking to Ranni in her tower, or you miss the entire point of her introducing herself as someone else. (As far as I can tell)
