One of the first things my first drawing teacher at art school said to us was: "Draw what you can't see, then drawing what you do see will sort itself out." She then referred us to the most valuable book I read in art school - The Art of Responsive Drawing by Nathan Goldstein. (It's in it's sixth edition already.) It took a little while, but I got it.

@@careyalvezartschool Carey, I apologize and I will cote him correctly: ""Your Job is not likeness, your job is to make the most dynamite interpretation of the architecture possible - the best design possible." And the list of his cotes in this scenario goes on - and they just get better and better:

"Your Job is not mimicry, your job is to idealize!" The next one is longer but yet, nice: "When you are constructing, having some sort of idea about how to idealize, gives you a lot of amo, from when you are drawing from the model, I mean, I don´t wanna completly "hide" the model, but I do wanna - if I wanna lean in the direction of what is pretier, what´s a better choice, so, have a direction, otherwise all you hope to do it´s copy really well, and copy really well that´s not fun. You wanna be abble to look her and say: " ok, I like this part and this other part is a little funky, how ca I... You know? And if you are drawing and you are not quite sure if the line goes to the left or right, You know? You kind have to think about what´s gonna be a better mistake."

You have some good videos on your channel, Carey. I am constantly puzzled by social media and its inconsistency as to what is deemed popular and what struggles to ‘get noticed’. As a painter and tutor I see a lot of value in the tutorials I’ve just watched on your channel but only a few have had more than a thousand views so far. I hope it grows as it deserves to. I thought your series on lighting a model/ ref shots etc was excellent and will recommend it to some of my students. Your narratives are also clear and to the point without annoying preamble and that takes a lot of work to achieve.

I'll work on that, thanks for asking. But quickly simply massing in the hair as a value shape and then picking out or erasing the highlights sure beats drawing in every little detail and strand of hair go to this video for a short demo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y8dlmrZ0mNqwo3k.html

@@careyalvezartschool I have been told I am a mood painter. Painting is very much a form of expression for me. Many people also fail to recognise limitations of photography (hence massive use of AI these days). So trying to copy a photo exactly is also trying to be restricted to those same limitations.
