Thank you so much for sharing the renaissance techniques because it’s something we should keep alive especially as artists, to really experience the past and creation so thank you for sharing your knowledge on the renaissance techniques it’s a great deed to the old masters for keeping it alive!

For your viewers - Samson Historical here in the USA produces the brass Porte-Crayon in 2 sizes. I ordered a couple. They are nicely made. Thank you for the inspiration. Best David

That's lovely, sanguine is my absolute favourite. I have some sanguine rock, but its very soft and crumbles easily when I try to cut a piece. I'm ordering a chisel to see if I can get a better result. I would personally lighten the background to separate it from the figure, or colour it to bring the figure forwards.

I kinda like the fact that the sanguine isn't much darker than the paper, so that way the drawing can almost blend into the background, as if coming out of the fog.

@@thomervin7450 yes it's probably a personal preference. I tend to prefer contrast.

Any idea how they would fix their drawings so they could paint over them? i know they wouldnt have fixative like we do these days, but ive seen drawings by Rubens where he has painted over the drawing, and the drawing is still in place. Any ideas!? thanks!

Hello Mick: I have a video dedicated to underdrawing techniques. Depending on the master, the common methods employed in the past were to use black chalk or to reinforce the drawing with ink or thinned oil paint. Thanks for commenting!

Hello, do you make all you sanguine lead by yourself? I saw your other video where you talk about your sanguine earth stones, but do you know any brand or type of media that is close to homemade sanguine like yours? I found some sanguine stones in the sennelier boutique in paris, but I’m not sure how to make lead with this (maybe by mixing it with arabic gum?). I really love your work, it is even more beautiful that the masters where actually working that way!

Hello Delphine: Thank you for commenting! I do make my own sanguine crayons using wax from a Leonardo recipe. The wax crayons are very nice to draw with, but they do not yield the extremely fine lines of natural red chalk. You can find natural red chalk at 👉🏻www.alchemistmediums.com/shopping/pgm-more_information.php?id=25&=SID . Best regards!!!

Hello FF: Thanks for commenting!! I am glad you enjoyed the video. I found those holders back in the 90s at the NY Art Central art supply. I don't think they're around anymore. I've had a lot of viewers asking about them, but I have not been able to find them online.

Hello Luis, love your video., Could you list the source for the earth chalks you use. I have ordered from wards natural science but the hematite red is rather hard. You have to break the pieces up to find a few scant soft pieces. Thank you again. Your a light in the darkness.
