Charcoal drawing techniques were perfected in France in the 19th century and taken to new expressive heights by artists such as Georges Seurat and Odilon Redon. This video includes a demonstration of those techniques.

Great video. What was the fixing agent brushed on to the back of the paper... perhaps more specifically... what did the great French artists use?

+Getty Museum I draw in charcoal on canvas board (8x6" to 30x40"). It's still an excellent technique if you don't have the time to pencil something in while producing an oil painting. It can be a messy medium, so it helps to have moist toilettes on hand as well. There isn't always time to rush to a fountain!

Yes. I work with dry charcoal but I have watercolor charcoal I want to try. A friend in Australia has won me to do a picture for her for a couple years and now But she elephants, so I'm going to use the watercolor charcoal to do a elephant in a water hole. I have hand tremors and they have worsened over the years but I need to just go at it and not give up.
