When I started doing portraits I would trace the main features and outlines while learning how to really draw what I was seeing. Eventually after getting really good at shading and replicating what I was seeing I stopped tracing and moved to a similar system to what he’s using. Now I just start every portrait on the right eye and just build from there, left eye, nose, mouth, cheeks, outline of the head, ears, forehead, hair. Never stop drawing!

Diane Quinn I don’t understand his measuring at all in the “Lazy Cat” tutorial. Do you understand how he measures the tick marks?

Darell I have learned so much from your tutorials, I deeply want to say thank you, I really appreciate your style and method of instruction! You have helped me to find a calm patient stylistic approach, versus my old rush and get it done attitude (because of which I lost my desire and enjoyment and now after my 20 year 'hiatus' I have come to enjoy sketching and drawing all over again! I do have only one question: When you do your layouts, by sliding the ruler and hands all over you drawing surface and by holding each, the portrait and your drawing g surface, all the while not wearing a drawing glove, are you not concerned with oils from your fingers being spread onto your drawing surface?

Hi Darrell :) Thank you so much for taking time out to share your awesome talents with everyone, I love the way you teach art, you make it so easy to understand, I also love the excitement and enthusiasm you portray when you share your wonderful knowledge... I know exactly how you feel when it comes to drawing, I get so involved that hours pass by ...just lock me in a room with pencils and paper and I am in my element LOL!!!.... I have been drawing faces since I was a little girl and still continue doing it to this day, if I see a piece of paper and pencil available you can bet I will draw faces...they fascinate me, but unfortunately through all the years of doing this I still cannot get the knack of shading, I keep trying, but I either do it too dark or too light...and I am never sure when to change pencils or the right pressure etc......in the end I end up with a semi flat drawing... I so want to have my drawings delicate and realistic looking.... I practice for hours, (and years too LOL!!! as mentioned) I have watched many of your wonderful videos and practiced and still get very frustrated that I still can't do it.....I won't give up, as I love drawing too much, but I must admit I do get a bit down at times....anyway.....sorry didnt mean to ramble on....lol!!!... I really appreciate this video and I am looking forward to the next one and more :) keep up the great work you are a wonderful inspiration not only to me but to others... it is so nice of you to share your knowledge and talent with everyone.... Thank you so much :) your Art work is Beautiful, so delicate and soft where needed, such realism and character....Just Awesome.... love everything you do :) wishing you and your team a lovely day :) Magz :)

Needing some clarification on the photo/paper. It's a regular photo glued to the paper that was suggested to add the thickness?

31:50. He's making the drawing 1.5 bigger than the reference. However, the mark of the outside corner of the eye, it's too close to the center line, compared to the reference photo. I think Darrel got it wrong there.

Reportedly, Van Gogh and Durer did as well. Norman Rockwell is said to have projected and traced from photographs.

This is so complicated and risks a person getting bogged down in just doing dots that mean nothing. Where is the art in this? None.
