In this video for new drawloom weavers, we examine common (and not-so-common) cotton yarns suitable for a wide variety of warps. We look at examples of finished cloth and consider sett and design possibilities for different structures. In the video's second half, some tips and tricks are offered for weavers seeking to push the boat out with fine cotton warps.

Thank you for sharing your super in-depth tips! I don’t have a draw loom, just a basic floor loom, but oh wow are these tips helping me understand weaving better! Thank you! 🧶🙏🏽💗

Great video! I love experimenting with different size warps, the possibilities for fun keep multiplying with a drawloom! I like that you advocate for 30/2 yarns, I've recently started with 2/28 and am enjoying the outcome

I have lots of 8/2 & 10/2 cottons (and a few others, almost all cotton, but some tencel, silk, etc). Peter Patchis has 24/2 cotton on sale this month, however, and I’m planning to grab a bunch.

Yes! 24/2 will be awesome. Get more than you think you'll need - drawloom weaving is addictive 🤣

Thanks so much for yet another outstanding video! I have a question about winding your warp with finer threads on spools: do you set up the spools vertically or horizontally?
@DuellingRabbits
@DuellingRabbits Ай бұрын
Good question. I set them up vertically on my lazy Kate because that's what I've got. I set the cones/spools/whatever so the yarn is winding off the top (clockwise) and don't have trouble with untwisting. But I do know folks who insist the cones must be set on their sides. Matter of personal preference, I guess?

@@DuellingRabbits Thanks so much for mentioning your lazy kate! I will give mine a try on my next warp. (It's an older Majacraft that will hold three spools at an angle - a compromise position.)

I have another question: I see in this video that you've used a warping mill. Do you find that you prefer the mill to the warping board for fine threads?
@DuellingRabbits
@DuellingRabbits Ай бұрын
Such a personal choice! There are as many ways to wind a warp as there are weavers, and many swear by their warping boards. But yes - once I tried a mill there was no going back for me. I use mine for every warp regardless of the length of size of the threads.

Butefull Amy we work on a draw loom now we warped it by 42/2 (50 cm weaving width) 6 end ground shaft (50 drawing shafts - use 27 shafts only in the design) when we finished warping I hope to make video for it

Thank you so much for this helpful video! I used many of these techniques on my first 16/2 repp weave project--in particular beating on a closed shed to clear things up. One question though on threading multiple threads through one heddle--do you find that the technique of using the ladders is only necessary for 30/2 cotton or would you advise it on 20/2, 24/2 or even 16/2? Because I'd rather not if I can avoid it...

Sara, that is a good question. I think the best answer is, 'Do whatever you can get away with.' So if you'd rather not use ladders, don't - and see how it goes. In most cases, it is not a necessary bother. I personally have never threaded ladders for anything finer than 30/2 - mostly because otherwise I've had sufficient pattern heddles to allow one for each warp end. But at the moment (spoiler alert!) I am using mallions (rather than pattern heddles) for fine linen singles and wondering why I don't use them for everything.
