Just to let you know, we did the same thing back in 1981. We bought an abandoned grange hall in Virginia. Everybody thought we were crazy. We didn't know what we were doing, but in the end, we had a charming home on 2 acres in the back woods of Virginia. Since then, we have done that many times, and we are still broke. Enjoy the journey. And, for what it its worth, we paid 8 grand. No septic, water, or electricity.

Hey all, for everyone who is curious on the thread, I'm from Johnston and I'm pretty sure Johnston's slogan, "Peach Capital of the World," came about as a result of a census back in the day. At one point in the US, Johnston had the most peach trees per acreage for their size than any other place in the US.

That would make a good episode, focusing on the overall cost of such a project. Planning ahead for a budget based on present condition and what the final vision is can save a lot of heartache. Since they will do most of the work (other than what requires a license) that cuts costs dramatically. Another consideration besides materials and specialists would be scheduling inspections for new work requiring such and working on other aspects while waiting. First time renovators often learn the hard way but even then the lessons are invaluable.

The "primitive" bath and kitchen facilities add to the adventure! My husband (then boyfreind) and I moved onto my land and lived in a tent within an event-tent. We used a porta-potty, solar shower, and grill... while we built our house(He's a master electrician/carpenter and I had done plenty of re-model work). June through October....married Dec. 31 in our new home! It's an adventure that we still talk about 14 years later. Enjoy it...the good and the bad, it's all great memories you're building. Oh...yes, I'm interested in the financials as well.

Just found your channel an hour ago with your old bank building project. I've now discovered the virtual treasure trove of your previous content which is right up my alley ~ haunted places, abandoned places, and best of all, abandoned haunted places. But seriously it's great I have a lot of stuff to watch until your next bank video is uploaded. But back to the bank project, you two are the perfect pair to bring that building back to life and the whole town realized that the instant they met you. It's still early, but the synergy is already very apparent.

I'm really surprised by how much this beautiful building in a quiet Middle of the town . That's crazy compared to Lebanon. This $30,000 would buy nothing in any area of Lebanon, even in far isolated regions. Congratulations, guys, and I hope you'll do well in restoring this historical building. As an architect, I always respect people who put effort into preserving and saving these buildings from demolition or improper renovations.

It was nice you shared the purchase price, I know, I was curious. And....yes, I'd be interested in the cost breakdown of projects and renovations. Hopefully you'll be able to cut the costs by upcycling, salvaging materials that are in keeping with the age of the building. You mentioned, moving in together, curious about your relationship. I'm sure it's probably in former videos but I only started watching with the purchase of this building. Just an FYI - I live in Pasco County Fl. currently. I used to live in the Brandon. Seffner, Valrico area and worked in Tampa for many years. Also lived in Savannah for 5 years, so familiar with the more southern way of things!

I think it is wonderful that you are sharing the financial impact and wanted to ask Sara(h) if you plan to keep a running list for an accurate cost breakdown after all is said and done. I think this is the one thing that keeps most people from jumping in and doing something like this (the lack of information on how much it actually costs). Curious, I did some research about Johnston, and found this description of your building: "Bank of Johnston, 534 Calhoun Street (c.1888): Two-story, stuccoes brick bank building with glazed terra-cotta facade, remodeled in 1908. Second story is dominated by large Diocletian window with diagonally latticed muntins, egg and dart molding, and console keystone. Bays are defined by four pilasters with Scamozzi capitals. Central bay is pedimented and has acanthus leaf and scroll acroterion and cartouche with swags. Paneled terra-cotta parapet is surmounted by four ball finials. The original tile floor and vault are present in the interior." I think your biggest architectural challenge will be choosing what to replace those double glass doors with. Because they're kind of an abomination! LOL!

@@DraysWorld A shop that focuses on peach related items seems fitting. Incorporating graphics that detail the local history can add charm to whatever business it becomes. While potentially costly, a mural on the right-side exterior wall can make the place a tourist draw for photo ops, potentially enticing customers to roam inside as well. There is always the option of renting out the lower floor as a commercial venue given the nature of the access points.

Be glad you chose a very small town. Anywhere else, there would be building permits (and more permits and more permits) which require detailed construction blueprints, probably an engineer's sign off on the safety of the building ( and if not safe, it would have to be torn down and start over), $$$ for permits, building inspectors telling you all the things you did right that they find wrong, and no way in the world would they allow you to move in until after final inspection.

Hi! Since you're now nestled in the bosom of the Peach Capital of the World, could you please share updates on the peach crop? I know our spring in the Upstate was pretty mild. I hope there are no lost crops this year, as there were last year.
