This is a video showing how to raise steam in a high pressure internal fired O gauge locomotives which use Meths (alcohol). It was originally made for the GoG virtual show last year. I demonstrated using my GNR Atlantic which appears in many of my videos.
I'm planning another video for externally fired locomotives - watch this space

Thanks for the time and effort doing the video which is so helpful. Had me gripped throughout and I cant wait to get troubleshooting my Royal scot which I couldnt get going last year. It however doesn't have a water gauge(I think it did have once) or pressure gauge and no axle pump. out of the 2 gauges which would be most helpful and is it possible to retrofit an axlepump? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and happy steaming

Peter I'm glad the video was helpful. Assuming your Royal Scot is meths fired, then a water gauge is optional - a silver soldered boiler can run dry without any issues. I personally like a pressure gauge in high pressure loco as other wise you are relying on the safety values. That said, once you get used to how your engine behaves, it is less necessary. An axle pump is a nice to have. For some years when employment limited my time in the workshop I ran my Netta without one. I had to remember to periodically use the tender hand pump to top up the boiler. On most tracks, this meant every circuit. Given Netta is a freight engine, long continuous runs are not expected. Retrofitting is difficult but not impossible. Happy steaming

A fantastic video Dave. Very informative, I still have a great deal to learn. I have jumped into the deep end with a coal fired engine. Any advice in the future would be greatly apricated.

Hi Dave, I’m looking to get started in O gauge building, are there any companies selling plans, and even castings for this gauge. I’ve had a look, but can’t seem to find much out there. Thanks, Adrian

Start by getting the Gauge O Guild Live Steam book. Some of LBSC's designs including BAT (4-4-0 outside cylinder) and OWL (0-6-0 inside cylinder) designs are available. But make using modern GOG standard of 29mm back to back wheels (skim 0.5mm off backs of both wheels....). I'm always willing to help. There is also a 7mm live steam group on Facebook. What prototype(s) are you interested in?

The Live Steam book I often mention is available from the Gauge O Guild website gaugeoguild.com -> Publications -> Guild Publications. They will post to you in the USA (I tried setting my address in the USA :-) ) Glad you enjoy my videos. With spring around the corner, new videos should be forthcoming.

Hi Dave, I have access to a full machine shop this summer and am looking to build an O gauge live steam locomotive. Did you build these yourself/do you know of any resources I can use to get started? Thanks in advance.

Christian, Good news wrt getting access to a machine shop. My initial introduction was the 'words and music' of the designer LBSC which appeared in the Model Engineer over many years. Reprints of his BAT and OWL designs are available. Follow the instructions and you will have a working locomotive. I started with his NETTA design. The other resource is the Gauge O Guild 7mm Live Steam book. There is an 'O Gauge 7mm Live Steam' group which also has many resources available. I'm always happy to answer questions

www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=109791 shows someone building a LBSC mollyette - a single cylinder tank engine with a smithies boiler. This could be a good starting point. In the O Gauge 7mm live steam facebook group, someone has just posted the instructions (Words and Music) from the original articles. Follow them and you should have a working model.
