Dream '65 compared to Origin Effects Revival Drive/Revival Trem

This came from a comment on the Dream Video. How do the amp-like Origin Effects pedals stack up against the venerable Dream 65?
The reason I cranked the Dream 65 is bc the Revival pedals simulate a cranked amp. I know the Dream does clean tones amazingly well. That is not what I was comparing.

0:14 - I admit it, the Dream '65 is #1
1:57 - Revival Drive blackface thick tones
3:03 - Revival Trem (tremolo bypassed) and its CHEWY
3:59 - Dream 65 doing it so well!
5:50 - Revival Trem (tremolo engaged) and the syrup laid on top
7:15 - Revival Drive doesn't really do "clean" tones but that's ok!
8:30 - Back to the Dream and it's just too good
9:40 - And compared to the Revival Drive with more drive searing lead tones
10:50 -Final word from the Dream 65

The tones! They all sound so good. I'd be happy with any of these. The revival trem with the tremolo on sounded so good. The Revival drive seems so versatile. And the dream is also really impressive. Gotta say-you're playing is also fantastic, and enjoyable to listen to.

Of course!! Hope this answered some questions for you. The feel on the origin effects is like the real thing but the modeling of the rest of the amp (power amp, speaker breakup, mics, eq and tone stack) are all modeled perfectly by the dream. Cheers!

Thanks to your previous video about OE Deluxe 61 I solved years of questing for a sound that I could use and replicate with or without amp but keeping the tube feeling on the fingers. It sounds amazing direct to a mixer with IR loader, at the effects loop or just straight infront an amp. Tone and drive has to be analog! And trem, OMG. This thing is amazing and it took a while to understand that such a pedal exist. Thank you 😎

Great info on this channel, great playing and all round enjoyable content. I’m planning a new amp-less setup and you’ve completely sold me on the Iridium + Revival drive combo. The only question is whether to get the compact or the full Revival Drive. Currently trying to weigh the difference…
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 14 күн бұрын
Revival drive is amazing! I would actually recommend the compact as it can do probably 75% of what the full size can do. The full size does have 2 channels and a mid boost that helps as well though but if you’re just looking to add vintage amp tones to your iridium the compact will do for sure.

Beautiful playing. I've got a vintage blackface Twin and have played a lot of old Duluxes. I hate to admit it, but that Dream pedal just sounds right. Don't mean to yuck anyone's yum, but the Origin pedals are not even in the same league for me personally. I think I am going to have to pick this Dream and the Ruby pedal up. They are both just too convenient for quiet home recording when you still want an awesome tone. Thanks for the sweet licks and for helping me make up my mind.

I find the internodulation distortion on the the Dream sounds more ring-modulation-like in comparison to the Revival Drive. Personally, I prefer the somewhat cleaner string to string separation of the Revival Drive. Both sound very much like real amps though.
@SuperdangerStudios

Yes! I heard that as well. The harmonics and resonance that the Dream 'recreates' is much different to the analog/circuit based overdrive in the origin effects pedals. The RD cuts through the mix better but the Dream is a blast to play.

Thanks for the video man, really appreciate it! I have a (noob) question -- to what extent can the ruby be used with external pedals compared to the iridium? You said you preferred the iridium because it can be set more "flat", so what I mean is does the ruby also respond well to pedals and can it also be set similarly "flat"? Thanks again for all the great videos! EDIT: by ruby I meant the dream {insert facepalm}; I wrote ruby because I am looking into that one for some queen tones and funs (it was also 5am when I wrote the question, lol).
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios Жыл бұрын
Hey EBOB19. Not a noob question at all! The dream takes pedals reasonably well but it still will impart its tone/eq on your signal. The Dream has a pretty scooped mid sound which works with most overdrives, since they are mostly mid based drives. But when you get to fuzz pedals or specialty pedals like a klon style pedal, it might not always pair as well. THen again, specialty pedals and fuzz pedals are always tricky to deal with, regardless of the platform. In my experience, the Dream has worked with all my drives and modular pedals. But I prefer using my Iridium for a platform. Cheers!

You have the most awesome feel to your pedal demos. The chords you choose have such an amazing mood. I know its kind of an impossible question to ask you to teach me to play like that. But I'm wondering if there's a way that I can pick up some of the same habits. Do you think you could throw out the names of a few songs that you might have been channelling in this video? If it really was just completely original noodling. Do you have any advice on how to find your way from chord to chord the way you do. I get the soloing thing. I just don't get how you can be "noodling" and end up playing all of these chords and complicated looking inversions way up the neck, and have it work out into a nice flow without drawing from a particular song, or at least style of song...
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind words Thomas. It is just my noodling so no song that I am really drawing from. I do remember when I heard John Mayer cover Lenny and Man on the side it really opened my eyes to using the whole fretboard. I would say I pull mostly from jazz piano/gospel piano and jazz soloists. I love Ray Charles and Chet Baker and pull lots of inspiration from them. I think the lessons Tim Lerch gives on TrueFire are really helpful and teach chording technique. I think one of the focused I have is that a melody line has to lead the chords so that the listener has a feeling for what is going to happen. So even if I'm not playing a bass note or a chord I am still implying it through my note choice. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

@@SuperdangerStudios Thank you. That is helpful. Yeah you've got mad style for somebody demoing gear on youtube. Really enjoyed your footloose cover lol. Really fun nonsense. I have recently decided that I spent way too much of my teens and twenties taking myself way too seriously. Time to loosen up and have some fun with music, art, writing, etc. Maybe I'll actually end up making something worth sharing. Lord knows that the pressure of going to art school and trying to please critics didn't work out for me so well.

Great video. For my own use, I don't care how close a pedal sounds to an amp it is emulating, just whether or not it has a sound I like. That low end that was 'missing' from the RevivalDrive when on a cleaner sound may not have been true to the sound of a Deluxe Reverb, but to me it sounded less muddy and would probably sit in a mix better. I may be somewhat biased though a I have the RevivalDrive Custom and it has been my favoured pedal for a few years now. I use it into a valve amp, but also into a Line 6 HX Stomp with speaker IRs direct to desk for smaller gigs. I've also had the RevivalTrem and Magma57 but found I wasn't using the effects section of those pedal and could get a close enough and more versatile sound with the RevivalDrive. I use the BassRig Super Vintage for bass gigs now and have the guitar and bass versions of the Cali76. Finally, I have the Halcyon and M-EQ Driver on their way to tr them out. Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Origin Effects! They are expensive, but the way they interact with my playing always puts a big smile on my face which is worth the money alone.

Wow you have almost the whole collection! Bravo. I really want to try the m-eq and the cali76. I need a good comp on my board! Which of those do you think is the bigger bang for the buck? The dream sounds fantastic I have to say. Does it stand for Deluxe REverb AMp? Ha! Maybe Tempted to buy a used Revival Drive custom but at times it sounds very/too trebly? Can it be made to sound a bit smoother? here I thought the Dream had an edge on clear/light overdriven sounds, and it seems to have more body to it. the Revival Drive seems to shine on dirtier sounds, and shakes notes in such a beautiful way - I think having both is fantastic, but I still get the impression the Revival has a certain harshness that cannot be removed completely // I should play these pedals to get a real sense of how they feel to actual play them, which is super important. a lot of people seem to only be concerned with sound, but how reactive an amp/effect/ etc etc is crucial
@jamesk7552

There's a hi shelf and bright cap cut that can reduce the highs. Can also adjust the highs by reducing the presence/more knob as well. The expanded version of the revival drive custom with the panel on the bottom also can further tweak the tone as well.
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Music Fed! And I agree. The Dream is fantastic on clean and edgy sounds while the RD excels at any kind of driven whether lead or rhythm. The harshness was also due to the fact that I didn't change the presence knob when adjusting the gain, mostly bc it would have changed the tone from blackface style to plexi style. In terms of feel the RD really has it going, but the Dream has an amazing sound as well. Let me know when you try them!

The Dream sounded too flabby and distorted on the bass end. Yes, the Origin FX pedals sound a little less amp like when played solo. In a band mix however they could work better. I agree with you regarding the Iridium’s “flat” sound on the Round (generic Fender) setting. While people may initially find this underwhelming compared to the isolated sound of the latest “pedal flavor of the month”, that same anonymity makes it take pedals really well and everything just comes to life as you add drives and FX - which, after all, is how people will be using amps/amp modellers in real world situations. The personality amp pedals can easily become too much of a good thing when combined in a chain with other drives and FX. In that sense, I find the Iridium much easier to work with to get a good sound. It’s like a solid canvas you can paint upon. Unspectacular by itself but a reliable foundation for a quality end result.

@@SuperdangerStudios UA definitely sounds good but it feels a bit unfinished (like many of their newish pedal line) both in the hardware omissions and buggy software side. Maybe a V2 will come along to remedy that - or not. In the meantime, the Origin Effects pedals are just wonderful. I couldn’t resist the Magma 57 because it just sounds and feels so unique and musical. If money were no object I would buy them all and sort out over time which were keepers or which had unnecessary overlapping functions. But it sure would be fun finding out. :-)

But iisn't the UA is essentially a recording device or to a PA? The Origin Effects is designed to be used like a pedal into an amp. I don't record, I rarely play live these days so I want something that can go to my combo amp...I don't want to invest in other things to get to actually hear the UA.
