5 жыл бұрынContinuing on with the total overhaul of our overlanding camping electrical system, I had to bring reliable, expandable power electricity to the rear of the 4Runner. I ran heavy gauge wire to the rear and got everything setup all nice and clean so we can not only power our fridge, but we have TONS of room for future expansion should we ever need to power anything else in the rear! We ran power to a 12 circuit Blue Sea fuse block, we have a master shut-off in the front, plus several other places of redundancy to isolate any issues should they arise!

You really should get some 15 dollar amazon plastic wire loom and braided sleeving if you want this to last. Just having those exposed leads is asking for a short at some point in the distant future. Tesa tape isnt a bad thing to add in too. Wrap the leads in the plastic loom, Tesa tape the loom to the end connectors, then put the PET sleeving over the plastic loom to keep it from breaking down from heat or the elements. Also, dont forget that primary fuse/fusible link as close to your battery as possible. 1 short with no fuse on 4 gauge wire = fire.

My new favorite wiring item is Anderson Plugs. I put them on anything and everything. I was upset with Toyota after trying to remove the passenger side Tray a few weeks ago. Oddly enough, I really enjoy laying wire during projects like yours, it is so satisfying once the circuit is complete.

I always love watching your videos! Just a thought. You only really need to run the positive wire and then just make a short run straight to the body. Pretty much anything that is metal will be good enough to use as a ground, but Just have to use your best judgement in making sure the ground can make it all the way to the other battery.

Jason, I love you man, and have been a subscriber since close to the beginning. I've been busy this past year and just catching up on your videos; you're the reason I've got into overlanding. Please get a hydraulic cable crimper for those larger cables. They're not that expensive and you just have to make sure they have the dies are sized for the terminals you are crimping. You can get one for $50 to $100 which is probably cheaper than the cost of the cables you're running. The connection is much more reliable than even a soldered connection in a high vibration environment. I only know this because my father was an electrical engineer working on design of military jet engines. Keep up the work on these great videos. Apologies if your later videos have this solution but felt the need to post here on an older video.

Jason, a little trick I use to make fishing wires through a place in the truck that maybe I will need to run wires through again is to tape a piece of paracord to the first wire that gets run through then cut cord off at the end and leave it there, from that point on I have the cord already there and all I have to do is tie/tape the next piece of wire onto that cord and pull it through. (don't forget to tie a second piece of cord to the new wire so that when it's through you have that piece of cord for the next one, and so on) PS fishing line works too

Thanks, good video as always, Jason. I suggest as long as you have all the covers off, you may want to run a couple of spare #10's or so, plus a single antenna coax to the rear area for possible future installations. Seal off the ends with tape or heat shrink caps and Ty-rap a good coil length at both ends. Don't forget to label the ends as spares to location xyz. Ty-Just my 2 cents worth.

If you haven't put an SAE plug or Anderson plug on your fridge I would recommend that. Both provide a much better connection for power vs a traditional 12-volt "cigarette" style when bouncing around the trails. I have used SAE for years and they work great but some folks prefer Anderson.

Very good video thanks for sharing. Just a tip, the entire rear side panel is not that hard to remove so no need to break the top tray. Another tip, the fuse block should really be close to the battery in the engine compartment ; Bluesea instructions are correct. Hope this helps

Jason, I agree. Anderson Power Pole plugs are the way to go. Safe, secure and great connections. HAM radio folks have used Anderson to make connections uniform and consistent so that all appliances and applications can be connected. PowerWerx is a great website for wire, connections, fuses, power panels and Anderson products. Hope this helps you and your viewers. Hope to meet you in Flagstaff this May.

There are so many ways to skin a cat LOL - I used three 30 amp fuse blocks running to my sPOD so I have a switch for each fuse block on the HD screen. Gives me flexibility for my outlets so I didn’t have to get those gang panels with the meter and switch. I use high amp usb outlets since I’m charging iPhones and iPads. The gang panel outlets don’t have enough amps for newer apple products.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned by someone....Jason your accurate comment that "smart alternators" are never going to supply the 14.7 volts (amongst other charging modes specific to AGM batteries), however there are great onboard DC to DC chargers like the CTEK A250SA (just installed in my 2019 4Runner) and Redarc BCD1225D that solve this issue and have additional features like built in solar regulation etc. Just to be clear my set up is for dual battery, AGM as service battery and standard starting battery.

I use the Victron DC/DC converter to charge a LiFePO4 battery, which needs higher voltage, and it works great. Get the isolated one.

Hello! Thank you for this video. I hope you see this comment given 2 years have passed. I was wondering where exactly you fed the wires back on the rear driver side floor to get to the back tray. I saw you push the wire somewhere and then fed it through to the tray area. I did't see what part of the 4Runner you sent it through. Hope you can help. Thanks!

All that work and the 12v plug remains on the fridge. Cut it off, replace with Anderson, have another Anderson on the vehicles side panel, add another for running power away from the vehicle too. Tips are on my channel

Did the exact same thing to my JKU, you need to fuse the positive lead 2-6" off the battery(before the firewall) or it'll burn to the ground if the positive wire gets nicked and grounds to the body. a cut off only works if your there to cut it off but by the time you figure out whats causing the smoke/sparks/fire it's too late!

No worries! I would think it would work fine to power the fridge, but it only works when the vehicle is on.

That was going to be my question. Having a Tacoma with AC power in the bed, I was thinking of connecting an inergy Kodiak in the back and powering my fridge while still being able to charge the battery from solar. Btw Jason. Great video!

@@eugishere That's my setup, Inergy Kodiak, with a plan to add a smart charger such as Redarc to charge from solar or from truck battery. It's expensive, but a lot simpler. And my wife doesn't travel out of town long enough for me to complete a project this complicated.

It should be based on the amp draw of the item you are connecting. Most components come with a fuse, or a label for the rating. The fridge should be a 15 amp for example, the USB plug or a standard cigarette lighter are 2 amp.

Multimeters require periodic calibration. Your gauge could be off but more than likely it's the meter.

Jason both meters are calibrated at different places and different electronics in each other and blah blah blah that's why the reading different

@@SwellRunner If you can get your hands on a known calibrated DMM or oscilloscope to get a reading off the battery, then you should be able to pop the back off of your DMM and adjust the V+ pot until it reads the same as the calibrated DMM or oscilloscope reading. Then you will know your DMM is a lot closer to what it should be reading. You can do the same thing if you have access to a known stable exact 5v, 9v, 12v, to 120v power source. Tweak your DMM to match the output that your source is set to.

The cheaper the voltmeter, the cheaper the calibration. Borrow a Fluke multimeter or equivalent and then put a correction note on the cheapie with a label maker. Mine are about 0.1 V too high.

I hope you didnt use vice grips to crimp those terminals, they are not adequate for the job. Please get a proper crimping tool and re do the job. Those connections can get hot and cause a fire. P.S. I am an Australian Airforce trained Avionics tech of 40 years.

You spent all that time and frustration bringing the negative 4 gauge all the way to the back when the negative was back there already. You could have saved the weight of 98% of the negative cable. Just sayin'. Good video. Good information. Thanks for sharing.

Really vise grips to crimp the cables. Go buy a proper crimping tool or up fire insurance.

Overall nice work, keep them coming. I was happy to see the butane torch for soldering, then you only used it to shrink the heat shrink....so close to proper. If you don't want to buy a crimp tool use a chisel and a hammer to make an indent crimp on the terminal, then solder with a torch. The crimp makes a strong mechanical connection, solder keeps out corrosion and helps strength, and the heat shrink makes it look pretty.
