But what fascinates me is his vocal technique after all his trials in life. So, we sip some tea, talk about voice, his history, and really delve into who James LaBrie is. This chat was FASCINATING!

Great interview - Intrigued by the conversation about how certain vocal styles can lead to a short vocal career. I would be interested to see you react to Lamb of God under the context that Randy Blythe has been doing this to his voice for 25 years, and seems to get better over time. I would recommend the live music video of Momento Mori as there is a bid of singing - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/br9_bKx3zb69eIU.html ... Also worth reading up on his story standing trial for the death of a fan at their concert in Prague. The album this track is from was their release after he came out of that situation and is very introspective

For decades we've gotten mountains upon mountains of praise for the four instrumentalists in Dream Theater...with the general public able to at least "grasp" how amazing they are technically. Your analysis of Metropolis and Under a Glass Moon (and this interview)...just makes me so happy that it's finally shedding a true sophisticated light onto how amazing LaBrie is...and has been all these years. This kind of attention has been long overdue for him! Thank you so much!

A vocalist is easily criticised by 'the fans' but he or she has the hardest instrument to maintain and use on a constant basis when touring. I've never hated on James when he sounded off because I can understand how it's almost impossible to keep one's pristine younger voice as one gets older, especially when using it intensely for hours on end. He is an amazing singer and I am happy that he's the frontman of that amazing band. IMO there is no weak link in DT.

Idk... I always appreciated and respected James' skill. Dream Theater has been in my top 3 favourite bands for about 20 years, now, and I can't really picture the band without LaBrie - he's been an exceptional frontman for an exceptional band. I know what you mean, though. I hear a lot of people dismiss his vocals because it's not brutal growls (like Opeth for example), but truly that's their loss.

@@aaeiou90 That's why I absolutely hate when people (especially Dream Theater fans) hate on James LaBrie every chance they've got. LaBrie is doing EXACTLY what he's supposed to. He blends in with the instruments, he doesn't outshine them. Dream Theater is the first band that had me intently listening to the instruments, and I've got close to zero music knowledge. Thank you. It's progressive metal, of course they don't need no mind blowing vocalist.

This interview has left me in tears. I am a professional musician that had food poisoning about three weeks ago. I've been vocally damaged before (from over-singing, or singing rep I wasn't quite ready for, or singing with the flu etc.) but I've always been able to bounce back in a week's or so time. Since my food poisoning incident, my voice hasn't come back-- it's a first for me and extremely scary. It almost feels as if I don't know my voice and body anymore. I couldn't find a professional singer or article that could explain what was going on with my throat until this video. Watching this video prompted me to find an ENT immediately (a good friend managed to get me in really fast with someone). I can't thank you enough for this video. Thank you so much for your transparency James.

I ruined my voice with mistreatment. I lost almost an entire octave. It's pretty depressing. I miss hitting high notes so much. People tell you to just enjoy what range you have, but when you used to be able to sing high notes and then you can't, it's never the same. You can't release the energy and emotion in the same way. I've had to accept this, unfortunately. I hope you were able to get a better resolution than I got.

@@andoletube Wow I really sympathize with the both of you! After I got into a car accident my neck muscles definitely healed back into a different "setting" than they had before, and I really struggle with raspy notes near the top and bottom of my range. In fact my neck and shoulders never made a full recovery. I spent most of my adult life being able to sing very low and very high notes, and impersonate dozens of artists for hours on end without getting worn out. Now I feel like it is harder to do all of those things, and on some days, some techniques or styles feel impossible. I certainly cannot sing for those extended periods of time like I used to. It really resonated with me when I heard James and Elizabeth say that losing vocal ability can feel like losing a part of who you are. There are times when my vocal difficulties literally make me feel spiritually diminished. I have had times when I had to cancel myself out of entire commitments to my church music, or stop myself from singing in the car while driving for the remainder of a day. All I can tell you is, it gets better. It could take months, or it could take a decade like it did for James. I know I'll never be that "spring chicken" again, but that's okay. Find that new direction your voice wants to go, and listen to your body. I really hope everything works out for you guys!

@@philt6543 Thank-you, Phil, I hope you are right. I appreciate your encouragement and the care with which you wrote to us. And I can very much relate to having to switch off from singing sometimes, just to preserve your state of mind. There are times when I think, "hey, this is not too bad!', but there are other days when I sound and feel truly awful - on those days it's often better to take a break and come back to it when things are flowing a little better. This is a very real struggle because I can't just truly give up - something keeps drawing me back to it, in the hope that maybe I can get back what I lost. It hasn't happened yet, but maybe one day... I wish you all the best with your continued recovery.

It is mind boggling to me that James didn't feel back to normal until train of thought. ACOS, Falling into infinity, metropolis pt2 and six degrees were monumentous. Those records as a snapshot showcase an absolutely insane amount of talent from James and I think that's under stating it. I dont think James gets nearly enough credit for his musicianship, vocal versatility and vocal memory of all things. Wow! I could go on but I won't. Lots of love and appreciation for James.

This honestly is one of the best interviews I’ve ever watched. James is a fantastic guest. And it’s awesome seeing him getting the recognition he deserves. But what makes this even better is that Elizabeth is an amazing interviewer. I love how giddy and excited she gets. 10/10 and thank you for this!

Mad respect for James. What a great interview. I hope those who have had doubts and misunderstandings about James see this in-depth interview. Really the first time in Dream theater history to get this much insight to his rigorous training, vocal accident/recovery, vocal inspiration, and his awareness of his craft. Also really down to earth. Like the man sold more than 15 million cds and he's asking a vocal coach in an interview whether she has suggestions for his routine. Really got the impression that he talked to Mrs. Zharoff at eye level and stayed a normal and humble dude who's open and sees the person he's talking to.

James and I hung out for a bit backstage during Portnoy's last tour. He was gracious, humble and wise. He is a vocal hero to me! I love DT!!! Thank you for this!

Humble? Interesting, most people I've heard that hung out with him as fans said he was kind of a jerk... "I'm way above spending time with you" type of vibe. Maybe he didn't feel that great those times, stress, personal reasons, etc... or maybe those people were just straight up lying.

I've met James a handful of times. He has been nothing but down to earth and absolutely pleasant. Our conversations we're genuine. Every time felt like you were talking to one of your friends. He's a stand up guy.

James was, is and will be remembered as one of the greatest voices in progressive rock music. We can all agree on the fact that DT wasn't becoming "DT" until James joined in. His style and range were just unmatched at the time. I can't say enough about his man. Thank you James for leaving a legacy and inspiring multiple generations. #DreamTheaterFanForever

I have a bootleg live recording from the Awake tour in Japan just AFTER his food poisoning. He was really struggling- even skipping certain sections all together that were the most demanding.

James obviously doesn’t identify with the “Rock Star” persona. Very relatable and articulate. I had a small conversation with him via Cameo last April. He wasn’t able to sing for my birthday request because he was currently in the recording process for Dream Theaters new album, totally understood! But we had a cool little conversation. Amazing story given the lyrics of the song Learning to Live. I believe I read that Myung said the story in the lyrics was inspired by the AIDS epidemic, from the point of view of someone who contracted AIDS, and then James reveals in this interview that Freddie Mercury had just died right before James recorded the vocals. Gives it more weight and context. Amazing interview!

You've got the bass player John Myung to thank for those lyrics about the AIDS virus in the 80-90's. Quite sad but very accepting full of compassion. I get a different meaning from the lyrics but I think that's what makes song like that so good. They can invoke whatever you like in it and doesn't have to be about what the lyricist wrote about.

Yeah I've noticed that a few times with these, they're more like conversations, Devin Townsend too had a few questions for Elizabeth. There's a lot of interviewers can't hold someone's attention for 20 minutes on talk shows, it says a lot for Elizabeth that she has some of these people for a couple of hours and keeps them engaged.

I’ve seen dumb comments of people saying he has the easiest job in the band. That’s completely untrue. I’m sure vocalists would love to have the pleasure of changing out their vocal chords like guitarist and drummers do with their strings and drum heads. James is a treasure and sounds great for his age and the tragedy of the food poisoning he experienced. I’ve read somewhere in the past that he wanted to quit DT after his incident, but most of the band members (current members) encouraged him to stay. I’ve heard bad vocal performances from other popular bands... but they don’t get torn apart as much as James. I guess that’s the nature of the prog community? I love James. DT wouldn’t be the unique band they are without him. His solo and side projects are amazing as well, even better vocally than some DT material. I respect him so much! He’s talented and an overall great person. I’m fortunate to have had him sign a copy Winter Rose for me 10 years ago. It’s one of my most treasured items!❤️🤘

@@DumbTacoBeast To be fair, the actual vocal parts are easy sing if you go down an octave and don't try to copy his sloppy singing technique. High notes are the most challenging thing about DT vocals, which LaBrie is already a high tenor anyway.

my birthday was 2 weeks ago, we where bbqing from about 14:00, and of course by 23:00 there was no sobriety left, and we destroyed "The Spirit Carries On", and when I mean destroyed, its not the good way. but of course we thought we where singing like a choir.... i filmed it for a friend who couldt come... saw it the day after... not pretty....

I have everything Dream Theater have ever done, plus all the solo stuff of all the members, including James, watch every interview online I can find over the years. This is by far the most interesting interview from the DT camp I have seen, Elizabeth is also first class as a interviewer to manage to get information out of James and I’m sure other artists she has had the pleasure of talking to. Makes a change not just discussing the new album.

In 1992 I heard James for the first time. In a recordstore I heard Pull me under from Images and words, his first with DT. (yes back then when we bought albums....) I had played guitar for a couple of years then but that album took me to a new level. I later became a guitar and bass teacher. I still rank that album as one of the best I have heard. Great interview, thank you. By far the most talented band working over the last 30+ years. Dream Theater would not be who they are without the amazing vocals of James Labrie. To be almost 60 years old and sounding better than he did 10 or 15 years ago is incredible. I hope they do it another 30 years :)

This was particularly heartwarming for me to watch... He mentions a man named Jaime Vendera. He's a vocal coach in the Guinness Book of World Records for shattering glass with his voice WITHOUT an amp! He wrote a book called Raise Your Voice, which is basically the singer's bible. When Jaime became too busy with a ton of projects, he named ME the very first message board director to help him out and even put a tip of mine in the second edition of his book... Very good memories... Brought a tear and a smile to my face

This is like a bizarre fever Dream. Seeing James on your channel and getting a 2 hour interview is incredible. I am a long time dt fan their music has inspired me, helped me through tough times and even helped me form some long time friendships. Though I haven't been as big a fan of the post portnoy Era, this was a very nostalgic ride for me. Thank you so much for this interview, and hats off to James for being like an open book here.

I had a very lizard-brain knee jerk emotional reaction to Portnoy leaving. I don't think I gave Mike M a fair shake. All that being said, A View from the Top of the World is very evocative of their Six Degrees / Train of Thought era stuff. I get a strong classic DT vibe from it that's been missing for me for a few albums. Check it out and maybe it will change your mind as well.

I saw DT at the Orpheum in Boston when they played the Astonishing there. James was absolutely perfect the whole night. I've seen them at least six times over the years, and they have always been great, but that night with The Astonishing was truly spectacular.

Thank your for this interview and for the reactions to James LaBrie. It was finally time that someone gave this man credit for his incredibile career. Most people don't realize what it means to perform for 30 years, being on tour and having to deliver Dream Theater performances in front of thousands of people. James mentions "awake" several times. I loved that album when it came out. It was darker and heavier than images and words. All these years later it is still my favorite album from them. I would put awake in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. I almost had that same feeling with 6 degrees. Caught in a web, Voices and Scared are incredible songs from awake.

Like.. no offence but what do you (or I, for that matter) know about what vocal talent looks/sounds like or how to measure it? Its not even possible to compare the members in a way that asserts they are all able to be arranged in skill order from most to least skilled - you cant even compare the talent needed for drumming vs guitar vs vocals etc and furthermore you can't but a metric to it to be able to rank them like that. Someone doesn't "have to be last" because they aren't racing in a marathon or competing in a sport. They all bring different things to the band and they're all exceptionally talented, so to say James is "unequivocally the least talented" is an unquantifiable and ignorant statement, and tbh I think you're just repeating stuff you've seen other people say about him online

James is AWESOME. I understand that his voice is quite special, and not for everyone. However, I will never forget how I felt when I listened to Images and Words for the first time, when I was 14. His voice on that album, his performance, tone... it's heavenly. Even just after the food poisoning thing, his voice and singing on Falling Into Infinity is still beautiful. Respect James. Saw then a few years later at Ronnie Scotts Jazz club when they did a night of covers, which featured on Change of Seasons

This was such an awesome interview!! I've been a fan of James LaBrie since I was a teenager and I've seen them perform eight or 9 times now. I was lucky enough to meet him on The Astonishing tour and thank him personally for the awesome performance and detail he put into all of the characters voiced.
