Episode Notes:
1. Dreamcast version captured on real hardware and upscaled via the Framemeister to 1280x720.
2. Arcade version captured via Supermodel emulator running at 1024x768.
3. Sega Rally 3 came home as Sega Rally Online Arcade for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It has since been delisted with no replacement.
4. Outside of the DC and PC versions, Sega Rally 2 has no other way to play it outside of the arcade.
5. I think one reason Sega Rally 2 gets so much shit is because the Saturn version of the first exceeded expectations, while the Dreamcast game came up short.
6. There is a Sega Rally 2006 that is Playstation 2 exclusive.
7. Sega Rally Revo was released on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PSP.
8. Despite being inferior visually to the arcade, I still play this game often. I think the gameplay still holds up really well.
9. The arcade version is so incredibly rare in the US. If you find it, sit your ass down and play it. You'll likely never see it again.

@@MAL9000. My point is that since it’s a 3D racing game they will either have to redraw the cars’ models so that they match the newly-licensed ones or just make a new game altogether (like SEGA Rally 3/Revo) because if they are going to remaster these old games they will end up being delisted at some point in the future as it happened with Outrun 2006 and Online. And THPS 1+2 are technically remakes, they were rebuilt from the ground up to match the current-gen’s standards in terms of hardware performance, so they can’t be counted as a rerelease, which means that they worth the cost of getting a Tony Hawk license.

The fact that we received a port of this 90’s classic at all is something to be thankful for, considering Sega has been sitting on an entire library of great arcade titles for several decades that haven’t seen the light of day outside of emulation (and, sadly, likely never will!) One must take into consideration that the initial port of SR2 was five things at the same time: it was a 1st gen title on a new architecture, it was a JP launch title (1998), it was Sega’s first attempt at porting an arcade title that ran on the much more powerful and architecturally dissimilar Model 3 Step 2.1, its code was adapted from the PC version in development at the same time, and finally it was also intended to showcase Windows CE. Lots of factors working against it as to why it wasn’t ‘arcade perfect’, but in spite of all of that pressure, we still ended up with a pretty great game. Were Sega’s later efforts on the system (F355, Sega GT, Crazy Taxi) more visually advanced and consistent? Yes. Is it a shame that online play was dropped? Certainly. But in SR2, I would argue that Sega gave us one of the best ports we ever received from them during the DC years in terms of content beyond just ‘arcade mode’. I disagree with one point that SLX made in the video: if you are going to play SR2, getting the PC version to work is 100% worth it. 800X600 maxed out at a rock-steady 60fps is closer to how it should have played on the DC. I still play SR2, and the PC version is the only one I return to.

When VF3TB came out, reviewers were really hard on it for being less than arcade perfect, but the differences were definitely exaggerated. It had a slightly lower poly count in the character models, and dropped a few frames in the pre-fight flyover of the arena (not during actual gameplay). If you watch a side-by-side of the two games you'll see that the DC version is nearly identical to the arcade game. And keep in mind, most footage of the arcade version of VF3 on YT is from an emulator running it in a higher resolution - the actual arcade game ran in a lower resolution than the DC version.

Not just bring the arcade home, but to have a feature rich 10 year mode. That offered a ton of replayability. And then the music was amazing. It was an awful port that massively disappointed and annoyed me at the time. Sega *finally* learned to add more content to their home ports of arcade games, but completely failed with performance and graphics when they finally had a console that could match their arcade hardware. The fact that the Saturn port of the original Sega Rally ran at a 100% locked frame rate on a way less powerful console was just embarrassing. The DC was meant to be "next gen" and the SR2 port couldn't even get close to a locked 30fps and with vastly inferior graphics to the arcade. Ridiculous. Soul Calibur was a early DC release, by a 3rd party dev, and yet in such a small amount of development time they still managed to _significantly_ improve the graphics over the arcade (completely remaking all characters and stages), while adding tons of content and having totally solid performance. So i don't know why you mentioned that game because it just further invalidates your argument.

Press Up, A, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, B, Up at the Press Start Button screen to lock framerate to 30fps (a tone confirms correct entry). That's different to the 60fps code that reduces visuals and still can't maintain 60fps much more than the vanilla default setting. This makes gameplay 100% stable and perfectly playable with no issues so you can enjoy the substantial additional content over the arcade version. Where the arcade has 4 tracks, the home version offers the first three as track themes with 3 courses each, plus two all new themes on top with the same amount of courses for each, plus weather and time of day variations of all of these through the 10 year championship campaign. So, while it's a technically challenged port, its gameplay & new content (against Sega's usual barebones efforts) make it more than worthwhile. Of course it's also much higher resolution, Model 3 pushed just 62% the pixels (or Dreamcast pushes 161,29% the pixels), so something had to give for such an early port from such completely different architecture and programming methods, given they also added some effects/lighting. That's also part of why imo Daytona USA (2001) is nothing to scoff at next to Daytona USA 2 as that too is higher resolution with flawless performance and draw distance, it just aped the original game more than the sequel in style, theme and even gameplay and did so very successfully, it's ace!

While it was running both versions side to side I wasn't able to tell a big difference between them, it's much more like those raw or smooth filters you turn on/off when you're playing some retro game in a modern console. But what we lost in authenticity from the arcade for the Dreamcast, we gained in features from the home PC version. :) It wasn't a bad home version, but in a perfect world they would have put a team like AM2 on converting the arcade for the dreamcast while building new features on top of what was already excellent. There's no doubt in my mind that the DC was able to handle an arcade-perfect version of Sega Rally 2. But this is what we got, and to be fair, it wasn't too bad... It's only a shame it couldn't lock to 60fps.

I couldn't understand at the time why they couldn't do a perfect port, but then I didn't know that it was on an enhanced Model 3 board which was pretty much three times as fast as that which VF3 ran on... so even without Windows CE being in the way, it's unlikely that we'd have got anywhere close to a perfect port.

For that I know the western releases were made in Windows CE hence downgraded while the Japan version runs on native DC graphics hence better (I never corroborated that). Same happened with some other games because of the stubborn Sega of America initially mandating using Windows CE to keep Microsoft happy... One of the motives of the Dreamcast downfall was the lack of mutual understading between the two Segas making some japanese gems never see the light in the west that would have boosted the system. I think this is worth commenting for a future Dreamcast video.
@MoonScythe1
@MoonScythe1 3 жыл бұрын
You are almost correct about this, and it is something that Sega Lord X should have researched. Windows CE api was used to port Sega Rally 2 to the Dreamcast to demonstrate the speed of porting using it. Although porting was fast, the trade offs and limitations to using that method are quite obvious. This is the case with ALL region versions of the game. If the game was ported using an in-house low-level api, the results would have been MUCH better, to possibly even arcade perfect.

 @MoonScythe1 @@SegaLordX Lot of time passed the memories about this are diffused lol. If I remember correctly, actually this is a direct port of the inferior PC version instead of the arcade. I really liked it a lot. Having been an NES kid, frame rate stuttering has never been a big deal to me. It's what I practically grew up on. But I also had no frame of reference for this game; I had never owned a Saturn at that point, and tended not to play sit-down racers in the arcade since my money went way further with fighting games. And so the online complaints around the game did bug me a little, that like Daytona it wasn't living up to a legendary Saturn version. Eventually I hit a wall in the game that I just couldn't pass, even running what I thought was a perfect race. I still remember the frustration to this day. I couldn't even imagine getting through the full ten seasons.

Dreamcast could do it perfect, they just chose to port it through Windows CE and that killed it. All Windows CE DC games are mediocre to crap, the only good thing about WInCE is that it made DC a great emulators console (for those of us who were deeper on DC)

I personally do love the game, Sega definitely screwed up using Windows CE as I’m certain that was responsible for the performance and lower res textures in the game. On the plus side the DC does run the game at a higher resolution than the arcade version. I actually didn’t like Sega Rally 2 that much back in the day when I imported a Japanese launch machine. It wasn’t the graphics that bothered me it was the fact I couldn’t beat it! 😅 About 10 years ago though I gave it another try and finally found the right car for me (Lancia Stratos) which allows me to consistently beat the game and I love it now. I’ll always consider the game to be a pretty good port that was hamstrung by Sega’s decision to use Windows CE. I know they did it to show PC developers they could use DirectX and that it wouldn’t be the nightmare the Saturn was; but in the long term it was probably a bad choice to launch with something that didn’t show the DC could outdo Model 3. I wonder if things would have been different for the Dreamcast is Sega hadn’t used CE? There’s an arcade near me that does have a Sega Rally 2, unfortunately the game looks like crap because they’ve replaced the 4:3 CRTs with widescreen LCD panels that stretch and blur the graphics. 😢 That said, it plays identically to the DC version, I was able to beat it first try by using the same techniques I use to beat the DC version, which I think is the best compliment that one can give to Sega Rally 2 on the DC.

Many years ago, I saw a Dreamcast system set up in a local store and it had a racing/driving game running on it. I thought it was Sega Rally 2, but now I'm not so sure. What I remember is that it had a weird looking car that seemed to have a segmented front (like the front wheels were on a separate piece joined to the main car body by a hinge), and it was stuck on a wooden bridge over a small stream out in a wilderness type area. I tried playing it, but didn't know the controls and never managed to get the car off the bridge. Does this sound like Sega Rally 2, or was it some other game?

Sega Rally 2 was the game I had most fun with from the initial lineup! It was the game that made me think "graphics won´t ever be more realistic than this"! Looking at it now, the pop up and fog hurts it. But what kept me playing was the 10 year career mode (never managed to beat year 4) and great split screen races! This game had a healthy dose of unlockable cars as well as the many exclusive tracks. Many of these tracks are my favourites, especially the crazy snow levels!

Such a pity the marketing for SEGA PC at the time give such a shallow expression of Sega games on that format. If everyone knew the truth, people would have pushed harder to purchase the PC versions of all Dreamcast games for a better experience. However, perhaps they didna want to push so hard in an effort to not affect Dreamcast sales. Oh well.

I didn’t have it when I was a kid, but I actually started playing it fairly recently and I think it holds up really well as a great option for people who want a fun arcade rally game. The controls are tight, the customization is very good for an arcade game, and the tracks are all fun. The timer is absolutely ruthless, even on the normal difficulty, so either git gud or try not to feel bad about turning the difficulty down a step or two.

An absolutely legendary game that has a special place in my heart. Both the arcade and Dreamcast. Dreamcast version's performance sure was a let down, but the PC version has better visuals and silky smooth 60fps all the time like the arcade. I recently played through that version for the very first time. I still remember when I finally got the Dreamcast home version after a long and painful wait, and was suprised to see that Ford Escort wasn't in the game (I had planned to play with it first). Later found out that for some reason it was only in the Japanese version and we got different cars.

It wasn't as good in some ways, but I still play it on PC when I'm in the mood for an arcade-feeling (and sounding) rally racer.
