In this video, the Dreamcast's startup sound and BIOS software are discussed. A re-creation of the startup sound is also attempted.
NOTE: There is an addendum video with a correction to the re-construction part: • Dreamcast Startup Soun...
CORRECTION: In the script for this video, the CPU / GPU specs read: "32-bit, 200 MHz RISC CPU, 128-bit 100 MHz GPU". I am not sure how or why the "(ARM)" text was added in the video but it's incorrect.

The "pole lead" sound has been around forever, it's just band filtered white noise with a tight Q (hence the "pole"), with the filter frequency corresponding to the key played
@Nitrocosm
@Nitrocosm 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I messed around with its settings in Dimension LE and discovered it only used a white noise sample with the filter. Simple, yet effective.

The menu sounds in the bios usually don't sound as annoying on actual hardware; I think the hardware must apply some kind of effect to the sounds to soften them. The emulation of the bios clearly doesn't add those effects.

Very true. I wish I had caught that on the actual console (I had access to one for a very brief time) before using an emulator to capture cleaner footage.

Great Job Troy! In my case, It took me long time to figure out how was made this sound. Later, I got a KORG M1 and I realized that has 2 waves called : 46-"Pole" & 47-"Pole NT". Probably the original startup was created with that synth ;-)

Pretty cool and close recreation. The trick with recreating the sound is also lowering the bitrate of the samples that youre using. The original has a lot of bitcrush/lofi/antialiasing present in the audio, which is probably due to the audio had to be the smallest size to fit on the chip. Old samplers and romplers from the 90s that used samples all had that lofi tone to them, which is a super distinct 90s sound imo.

This startup really is soothing - and nostalgic (the PS1's startup is both for me too but it wasn't my first console ever played, only my second). If the bassy note at the end isn't punchy enough, it doesn't sound right to me 😂 I'd LOVE to know how SEGA came to name the Dreamcast, because I find it amazing that my favorite game of all time was about dreams (and was in the middle of its lifespan).

Due to it being recorded, would that explain why there is some compression within the audio in the startup?
@Nitrocosm
@Nitrocosm 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it's one of the reasons but it was standard with a lot of consoles to use ADPCM on all audio, if not MP3, Ogg, AC3, or ADX as on newer consoles. ADPCM is fast to decode on older hardware so I'm sure that's why it was used a lot.

Hey Man, great video ! Just a little correction about the navigation sounds on the menu, these are deformed on emulators (I don't know why, maybe a problem from the emulator when it decode the sounds on the bios which them must be generated by the sound processor) and make them really hard on the ear but on real hardware these are really pleasant and not that loud !

If I lived in a Sega household like my maternal cousin did, I totally would've had a Dreamcast as a kid. The Gamecube was the next best thing though and there were some solid games on Nintendo consoles as much as there were on Sega's consoles. I did eventually find a Genesis at my grandma's house and I had it for years since then.

These videos really drove home to me something that modern games and consoles are missing imo: charm. Or maybe it was just something that leaked in the late 90s/early 2000s? Maybe it’s just me but games/consoles these days IN GENERAL don’t have anything on the charm, quirk, and personality of the Dreamcast, GameCube, PlayStation 1(&2), etc.

I couldn't help but notice your take on the sound for the game menu on the dreamcast being rather obnoxious. It would appear as though you are using an emulator correct? I only ask because for w.e. reason, the notes on the dreamcast will hang in the bios on most dreamcast emulators I've used. The notes are a lot shorter on console. Release and decay seem to escape the emulators i've used in the sounds for the dreamcast menu.
@Nitrocosm
@Nitrocosm 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. I used an emulator for the footage because it's cleaner than an analog video capture. Sadly, I didn't have access to the console for very long so I didn't go through the real menus to learn that it didn't sound the same as the emulator.

I think the reason why the Audio in Console systems Such as the Nintendo Wii and the SEGA Dreamcast sound very “crackly” during recording/capturing is because when developed, the audio arrangers/composers tried to make the audio sync with speaker based outputs instead of Headphone based outputs. Or it could be that I have a Shit Capture card lol

Whoa hold on... Those menu noises are different over here. They sound much smoother and less jarring than that. They made the American dreamcast menu noise sound like THAT??? I wouldn't like them if they did. You'll have to get a European dreamcast and see what the differences are haha all I can say is that those menu noises sound nothing like that. Let's not forget we also got the cool blue design which I thought fit much better.
@Nitrocosm
@Nitrocosm 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, no; I had to use an emulator to capture those menu screens. I only had access to the console long enough to record the startup animation and had to do the rest on my computer. The actual console's menu sounds, as it turned out, are not all messed up like that. By the time I realized that the menu sounds were not accurate, it was way too late.
