Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is a new dreamworks movie as the follow-up to puss in boots 2 last wish and ‪@Saberspark‬ noted that it's the biggest failure in the history of dreamworks making pixar's elementals and disney's little mermaid remake look like true art

Most of the movie does seem pretty mid, but on the note of Ruby being "stupid" for not seeing the betrayal, the lies, for being anxious and sucking at socializing... she's actually a lot closer to written as autistic, I think. If you think of her as an autistic teenager, it immediately makes a lot of sense that she would latch onto the thin pretense of friendship from the more popular peer and not recognize that she's being used, it makes sense that it's easy for her family to lie to her since she just accepts whatever they say at face value, etc.

@@Alderwood69 It does. And it makes sense. I would've actually defended the movie if they went with the mermaid actually befriending the kraken instead of being all part of a "masterplan" ages in "the making". It would've been more surprising that they actually gave us a story of popular and dorky teens being friends and trying to end some old family grudge between the 2 races. That would've been better than whatever that movie was... and yes, Ruby being autistic does makes a lot of sense XD

The reason why movies aren’t making as much money isn’t really because of quality, but because of streaming services. Many people don’t feel like going to the cinemas unless they want to support the project that they are interested in. Which is why they will go to watch Oppenheimer, because they want to support Christopher Nolan. It’s like how Blu-Rays work in Japan.
@TorManiak
@TorManiak Жыл бұрын
To add to this, people want to watch most movies on streaming platforms because they're usually not worth going out to watch them on a better medium. Only things like Spider-Man:AtSv or Puss in Boots:The last Wish are usually worth watching there so what's the point going to the cinema and watch anything else than things that are actually good?

At least with Elemental despite having similar reasons for flopping, it was still fairly talked about and more well known both good and bad which at least manage to give the film a decent recovery, but with Ruby Gilman aside from the trailer and reviews I barely heard a lot of people talk about it. And you can make the argument that Dreamworks is a hit-or-miss studio but they have not flopped this badly and nowadays we expected better because we know they could do better.

That might be true in so far as writers may have on average been putting more effort into stories, but a causal relation between medium and story quality is unlikely because both 2d (both digital and traditional) and 3d animated productions use the same writing and storyboarding techniques, any issues that arise in these areas are not hinged on the final medium.

The movie really deserved better. It was a unique take with monsters being the heroes and flipping the script of mermaids actually being the bad guys which is factually correct. I mean there was even an animated kaiju fight and they still messed it up! Heck even the art community was loving the animation style, though a lot of human designs could've been a lot better. Chelsea was by far my favorite character but they made her bad in the end by making her Nerrisa(the mother). Many are saying that the reason the movie was so bad was because it was being worked on since 2017 and they just wanted to finish it just to be done with it. Proof of this is when in the original storyboards Chelsea WAS the daughter of Nerrisa. I don't know why they didn't just leave her as that but hopefully there will be some light shed on that issue. Overall I'm hoping for a TV series of this because this was wasted potential and it needs to be fixed.

Then they subvert that expectations by using the plot of the mermaid befriending the kraken and I was like "are they going to flip it and ACTUALLY surprise me with something nuanced that made the title and the marketing a misleading for all the right reasons?"... and then they went with exactly what was expected... Sad, they were doing pretty good until that not surprising at all plot twist...

On the topic of Simplicity, I'm reminded of what my friend who does cosplaying said about her first Cosplay, which was something very basic... and she said it was the biggest mistake she could make. When you do something simple, it can be hard to really stuff it up, but any mistake you do make is magnified to a much larger extend then something, as it's a lot more noticable then something that is more complicated. This is true even if Complicated is more difficult to do, as you can hide or brush over them, were something simple it's just nothing else to hide it in. This is the same with Movies(and other media) with stories, sure Simple might be "Easy" but like those simple cosplays, any mistake are like a lightning rod to audiences attention, and it's only the good bits that can potentially save it

I honestly think the reason why most of these films are flopping isn’t due to quality, but just the Cinema experience is dying. You’ve got so many blockbuster films coming out now that the prices start to add up, especially if it is a film designed for families where you have to buy tickets, food and drink and all that stuff, it’s too much to justify going frequently. But thanks to streaming services, they don’t have to. People are now willing to just wait a month or two for a film to come out in streaming and only watch a couple films in cinemas every year, which led to only a few select films actually making good money. Whether it’s a franchise or a new ip, people don’t care for the most part, they’re just not willing to go to the cinema as much anymore, so these films are either flopping or barely scraping by.

It's definitely the subpar storytelling. All of those things eventually culminate to the fact that you're going to watch a movie that's probably going to be boring and it has nothing to do with the theater itself. Most movies have simply become a vehicle for cliches. Cliches are what used to sell therefore that's all they want to try.

So tired of this argument. It is factually wrong. People will go see movies if they think they are good and avoid if not. A prime example of this is the MCU. Most of these movies people avoid now but Guardians 3 did quite well. Only MCU movie to make money in a while. Spider Man No Way Home, Avatar, Top Gun Maverick, Spiderverse 2, and Mario also all did quite extremely good. In fact they all made a killing. People ARE still going to theaters. Quite happy to do so in fact. If they think the movie they are going to see if worth the price. And that has everything to do with quality. And yes, all of these movies were tied to pre-existing franchises. That doesn't actually mean much. My MCU example is one bit of proof. Mario is actually another. Even after Sonic, video game adaptations have a certain stigma due to historically ranging from bad to not great. Yes Mario fans were interested cus of fandom but the sheer amount money they made, $1.3 BILLION off a $100 million budget, was off of quality and really good word of mouth. Same for Top Gun Maverick. Making a direct sequel off a 20+ year old movie is a risky move due the the actual established audience diminishing over time. Its incredible success was due primarily to its quality. And that is the same for all the movies that have made real money over the past year.

Unpopular opinion but I'd rather watch something that's part of a franchise than something original. Original movies spend the whole movie setting up the foundation. There are things that need to be included in original stories for it to be a competent foundation, things like character introductions and worldbuilding. It leads to a lot of original stories feeling similar since they have to cover these same subjects. The advantage of franchises is that you already have that foundation, so you have more freedom to explore interesting concepts and ideas. Puss in Boots 2 works as well as it does because Puss is a pre established character. We know what he's normally like, so we understand how much the idea of death is troubling him. We understand that something is very wrong when he isn't acting like his usual self and are elated when he regains his lost confidence. It's the same with SpiderVerse. It uses it's audience's pre existing knowledge of who Spider-Man is to deconstruct the idea of being Spider-Man. It takes the two different halves of Spider-Man and has them fight against each other. The responsibility to save everyone that they can and the desire to protect those closest to them. You really just can't get a deconstruction of a character like that if it's something original. Not to say that original movies are bad, there's just only so much that they can do in their runtime, so they can't explore more complex ideas.

You know what was a good Twist Villain? The one in, and this is spoilers so Paragraphing this mother fucker. Rourke in Atlantis: The Lost Empire. And, this is important to note, you can pick up on it pretty early, in fact the movie leaves some clues for the audience to figure it out, so while he's a twist villain, it's not out of nowhere.

Big companies are too afraid of risks so they try to make super safe movies that are guaranteed to profit. Because of this any new creations feel bland cause they need it to be safe and not offend anyone. Because it's bland it doesn't do well cause it has no soul. A flop makes the companies more scared so they even less likely to take a risk cause they see their latest "risk" as proof they shouldn't take risks so they are most strict. More reliance on proven material and even tighter reigns on new ideas causing a spiral.

Sound of Freedom? Considering the subject matter, I sure hope that one doesn't become a franchise. That would sort of be like Schindler's List becoming a franchise.

I really hate that Dreamworks has kinda taken the Illumination route lately. Extremely average kids movies that border on insufferable. I hope the Shrekverse comes in and saves them. Puss in Boots The Last Wish was the best movie they've made in a LONG TIME.

5:28 to say the same thing from a different perspective. Look at like speeches... now a lot of people find those boring but some also litsen to em. I absolutely refuse to litsen to a speech I've heard time and time again. When my family shows me speeches I've seen before all I can think is "wow amazing wow, really omg just like me for real for real" *with the heaviest dose of Scarcasm in my life!* Like I don't care I've heard it before. A message of a film or a troupe is just like that but far more palatable because it's entertainment... but eventually you have to do a lot more to make people still want to see that story. Different ways of telling different metaphors that aren't as obvious and in your face. The more obvious it is the more it becomes like a speech, you may as well tell it to the audience. 🤔 if you wanna tell a story that's been told before you gotta mix it up and do other things to make it stand out.... and clearly higher budgets and better graphics is not enough.
