Here is my approach to creating some dreamy pop vocals. Or should I say, haunting pop vocals??? Hope this helps some of you who are interested in these types of sounds. Hey, It's me, Willeh!

Sounds like Elliot Smith with the raw doubles. I always liked the way that guy recorded his vocals.. dude loved the multi dubs and harmonies

I have to say that delay sounds really good, didn't imagine it would. Listing to this though my big speakers!

Man I learned a powerful lesson today, you made it sound so good with just Ableton stock plugins, I don't need gear acquisition syndrome. What I was doing before was using a plate reverb with a .8 second decay and 10 ms of predelay and 50/50 dry wet, as well as another 2 second decay reverb as a send. It sounded cool, but it was a little too washy, while only using the plate wasn't exactly the effect. Pumped to try this method, Thank you!

I now have a brand new Dream Pop Vocal track preset based on this video (thank you for that). It has three vocal tracks in a folder with the C->EQ->S plus sends to a folder with a delay track, two reverb tracks and a send just from the hilite to the pingpong delay (and other effects) track in case I need it. One click and I'm ready to lay down vocals. You've got a nice system here.

Love that touch with the ping pong delay, just putting it at the end of a line. DIY like that definitely works. I'd say another way to do it is also to sidechain compress it to the lead vocal so it doesn't get too washy and the words still have some clarity. I'm a sucker for this genre for sure. Knowing what's enough and what's too much with the fx will definitely do the trick. Thanks for sharing the wisdom Willeh!

Willeh, thank you for this amazing video. Truly eye opening. Or ear opening... I had a question: how do you approach effects for Dream Pop backing vocals, like on something like Alison (Slowdive)? The oohs and Ahhs just sound so dense on the some songs and I can't seem to get anywhere near it. If this is worth doing another video, would ya, could ya? Thanks, Scott

Curiosity: when you double your vocals do you copy and paste or do you sing over it? I’ve done both so may times and I still can’t decide which one is best
@bananalabs2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I usually always overdub my vocals (track over). There’s a more organic chorus feel to it because of the imperfections of each individual vocal track.
@user-ze1ec2ub6z9 ай бұрын
I recommend doubling them up. You'll notice the slight differences between the tracks make it sound less copy and pasted. It' makes for a better effect in my opinion.

Newbie question: Did you just copy/duplicate your vocals when doubling it or you re-recorded it? TIA
@xloveisamyth2 жыл бұрын
when u duplicated the tracks in the beginning. did u run into phase cancellation? or does this not happen since the fx are added? it sounds clean in the video but im just curious how/ why since duplicating is usually not recommended? or maybe you recorded them twice and I missed it
@bananalabs2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t duplicate the vocal tracks but rather overdub another vocal track of the same line for a natural chorus effect. So they are actually 2 separate recorded vocals instead of one vocal track being duplicated. That I can recall, I haven’t had any phasing issues when overdubbing my vocals.
@bananalabs2 жыл бұрын
Also, any phasing issue can be easily fixed with the Utility effect in Ableton. However, I don’t have to do that when tracking my vocals since there hasn’t been any issues.

hey, how do you make a track mono on ableton? when i record my voice it automatically goes into a stereo track
@bananalabs2 жыл бұрын
Open Preferences, then go to the Audio page, click on the Input configuration button and make sure all of the Mono ins are selected and not greyed out. You should be able to select any single available Input on your hardware as Mono Inputs on any audio track you create! Hope that helps.

Did you pan the vocal doubles and harmonies or leave them straight up the middle?

Sometimes I do but very little. Or I’ll throw a widener effect form a vocal synth plugin

Occasionally. But I would pan the doubled backup vocals and doubled harmonies for sure.
