Karl Urban is on the record saying that this was his absolute favorite project to work on and if there was a sequel, he'd bend over backwards to do it again.

@@thomasharfst3381 meh. Most streaming series have devolved into 2 hour movies stretched out into 10 hours of glacially paced snoozefests. I’d rather have a really good two hour movie I’ll watch a few times a year than some bloated meandering streaming show that they’ve stretched out into 10 episodes in an attempt to keep me subscribed. Looking at you Disney+!

There are good shows like that, but it doesn't work for Judge Dredd. 25 minutes an episode, different bad guy every time, Dredd taking every single one of them down with extreme prejudice? If you read the comics, then yeah, this is a typical mundane day for Dredd. His "Interesting" days involve extra dimensional war criminals, fist fights with aliens the size of a small bus, Democratic "Radicals", the literal Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and a hyper intelligent Bonobo named Nome Chimpsky

Dredd...the movie that deserve the most to have both a sequel and a franchise !! So many rumors, but the project is always shut down...Way more grounded that the 1995 Stallone movie, Urban feels just right in the role and the whole concept was great ! Most underrated action movie of the 2010's no question !

was going to be a Mega City One tv series on SyFy.. centered around other Judges from the comics with occasional appearances of Dredd and Anderson.. but it went into development hell and was eventually shitcanned

Rumors were always just fans either hoping or presenting their denial as facts. The fact is this movie bombed horribly at the box office. Like really bad, especially for the budget it had. It was well out of the 'sequel could be risky to make, but could have a better turnout' range. That said, it was a tremendous movie that just had bad luck. I believe the time frame they released it in was around the time of a huge Marvel movie and some other huge blockbuster. Studio gambled on it doing well because it was based on a comic book when the reality is people still remember the 90s Stallone movie or don't know who Dredd is or who publishes it. Non Marvel or DC comic book movies usually tend to have a hard time in this era of comic book movies as the comic correlation isn't there immediately. Dredd is very much in the cult following area of comic books. If you know Dredd and the arcs, then you're an avid comic book fan more than likely. But if you only know Dredd because of Stallone, that makes a movie like this a very hard sell despite the care and passion put into the project to make it much more accurate than the 90s film. Urban was perfect as Dredd. I wish that it blew up on home release, but that seems to be not the case, but it is slowly getting discovered and appreciated over time.

i like the fact that when the guy was telling Dredd that the city is a meat grinder, he wasn't lying or exaggerating , you actually see them picking up the dead bodies for " recycling" in the beginning of the movie

The comics really dive deeper into the horror of that. There is a whole industry called 'Resyk' that processes the dead into various materials or spare organs; "We use everything but the soul".

The Stallone version is very campy and meme filled, but this version is dark and bloody like the original comics. Both are Good in their own ways.

Um. The original comics are VERY campy and over the top with british punk tone, violence and satire. The comics aren't broody at all! Also I can't see Judge Death and his other supernatural allies existing in this movie's universe. It's far too grounded.

@@carn9507 I said Dark and Bloody, not Broody. Judge Dredd comics have dark humor and a lot of gore. I read a Predator x Judge Dredd comic and it has little miss psychic drinking the Predator's blood.

The Stallone version was part of the reason for Dredd's failure at the box office. People thought that it would be just another rehash of what Judge Dredd presented.

We all knew Carl Urban was a great actor from so many different movies and shows, but his commitment to this role is next level. In the comic you never see Dredd's face but you do see the perpetual scowl. Urban nailed the look and feel of Dredd.

They could have had a scene where Urban takes off his helmet for a second (to wipe his brow or something) but we can't see his face because there's a piece of plank or tape that says "Censored" in the way.

I bought this on 3D Bluray planning to get a 3D disc player in the future. And then 3D players and TVs disappeared off the face of the planet. I really wish I could watch it in 3D. Maybe someday I'll find the equipment for it.

I first saw this movie in 2012, at a special screening organized by my local comic store. About 300 Judge Dredd fans (and comic book fans in general) in one movie theatre, all of us hoping we were finally about to get the Dredd adaptation we deserved. Needless to say, the movie did not disappoint. When the dispatcher asked "Do you require backup?" and Dredd growled "No," and sped up his bike, the entire room broke out in cheering and applause. Definitely one of my better movie-going experiences.

The publisher basically lost faith in it and barely marketed it at. That and the proven effect of 3D as box office killer basically destroyed it's chances.

I discovered Judge Dredd in 1977 when the comic book store I frequented starting importing 2000 A.D. into Canada. This movie is much closer to the comic book than the Stallone version. Dirty Harry was definite influence as John Wagner, one of the creators, had previously done a comic strip featuring a character called One Eye Jack that was directly influenced by the Dirty Harry movies. Judge Dredd was kind of bringing that character into a futuristic setting.

Parts of the Stallone version is closer to the comic, but thats mostly the design of the setting and the cursed earth. Story, Stallone and the message of the movie less so. This version do those things right.

@@cuffzter The story was based on actual comics and the message in a way also. The key thing is the level of satire. There are people walking out of Dredd 3D with no idea the character is intended to be a satire of a fascist police state, they just see it as "Tough sci-fi cop they kind of wish existed in real life".

Having seen both movies, I think the 1995 one was still fun, and visually did justice to the comic; However, the 2012 one really nailed the atmosphere and the violence, much more faithful to the spirit of Mega-City.

OMG Dredd is so underrated!!! As was Karl Urban (seriously, check out his movie credits) until recently with 'The Boys', but even that has a fairly limited audience. It's criminal Dredd never got a sequel. Urban is one of the best and most versatile actors working today.

I first remember seeing Karl Urban in the dual roles as Cupid/Caesar in Xena Warrior Princess in the mid-90s. And you could tell he was something special! 😁

My introduction to the character Judge Dredd was the song "I Am the Law" by the NY metal band, Anthrax. It makes mention of Mega City, The Cursed Earth, Dredd's gun the Lawgiver. Judge Dredd was/is a British comic book series and not well known to the U.S. in the mid/late 80s when they did that song, so it was an obscure reference.

Its funny really because 2000ad was heavily influenced by America's culture, even Dredd I think was partly based of Clint Eastwood.

The interesting thing is that while Dredd is portrayed as a heartless, unbending Lawman, there are moments he shows a different side such as leaving the vagrant by the Peachtree, instead of judging him at the moment. ----- It adds a nice touch to the vicious beast we think that Judge Dredd brings to us.

I used to read 2000AD when I was a little boy, and this film really captures a lot of the atmosphere of the Judge Dredd comic strip! You can pretty much hit the PAUSE button at any random point in the film and what's on screen will resemble a panel from the comic, in terms of composition of the scene and the poses of the characters and so on.

@@carn9507 Only the very early comics had that tone. The vast majority wasn't camp at all. Like, the only camp thing about "Dredd vs Dracula" is the title, otherwise it is played totally straight. And yeah, this movie absolutely nails the visual style of the comics.

Alex Garland was later confirmed to be uncredited director for the movie. Original director was forced out. Alex Garland took over directing so it is unofficially his movie although he wasn't credited as director. Karl Urban confirmed it. I also had a friend who worked on costuming in the movie and he also confirmed it. Also yup it was a 3D movie.

Dredd is the most underrated movie of the 21st Century! Judge Dredd comics have been around since the 1970's... and the story has never been rebooted.. it's one timeline, one continuity almost 50 years after the story started. And that includes his crossovers with Batman and other more well known superheroes.

Technically multiple continuities. Various stories and crossovers don't exist within the main universe. And this movie is unfortunately a bland recreation missing a lot of the punk rock style and satire of the comics.

Dredd is like the alternative more ideal concept for the Mandalorian. Both always wear helmet, both have sidekicks who have psychic powers. But Dredd is more exciting to watch, instead of taking along a psychic baby who can't talk like the Mandalorian does with Grogu, Dredd takes a psychic judge who can talk, is a badass and has character instead of just being cute and sells toys.

Yes, this is based on a comic book series. A very underrated movie with top tier acting and compelling characters driving a brutal, straightforward story. It's insane that there has yet to be a sequel to this.

Sequels are not dependent on quality, unfortunately, just money. In Hollywood it's always about the money. At best this made back the production cost, and that's not enough. Which means it's a loser (in their eyes). There'll never be a sequel.

@@adaddinsane What you are saying - This used to be the case, with exceptions for sleeper hits that grow in popularity (and revenue) over time (like Dredd). A Dredd sequel will not be considered because it doesn't fit the current mainstream narratives. Talented film makers now must either comply with that checklist of narratives or be drummed out of mainstream. Because of ESG funding, real patronage has become less of a concern to film makers. Film makers have less concern to please the customer when our tax dollars are used to supplement their product. We have far too many examples of film makers (activists really) 'failing upward' off of ESG funding. The intent is to push agenda narratives despite revenue loss at the box office. Social engineering off the tax dollar is a typical strategic component of every regime striving to gain control over a populace.

Alex Garland got his start as a novelist. His first book, The Beach, is Generation X's Catcher in the Rye. And yes, it's the same Beach as the Leonardo Dicaprio movie. Where Garland adapted his own work for the screen.

Yes. IT did come out in 3D. I know because I was one of the few people that went to see Dredd when it came out. And I watched it in 3D. Best movie I've ever seen in 3D. I also believe it was actually shot in 3D format. Which means it was made for 3D. Not converted after. Like a lot of other movies they release in 3D. Mama coming of of the tub and those dudes getting blasted in slow-mo was awesome in 3D. If you get a chance to see it that way. Check it out!

Not only is the incorporation of slowmo great but this movie has a very tight plot. Extremely well written. Example, the detinator range wasnt completely random. They showed the judges comms not working in the building and they had to wait until they were at the skatepark. Showing their comms not working does multiple things. Audiences first thought is "call for backup". So that plot point covers why they cannot. It also builds tension since they are alone. Its also sets up the finale with the detinator. Extremely well written. The pacing, sense of progression, everything was very well done. It being isolated to a single building was very neat. Very easy to do some city wide thing. It makes it feel more real by having it in one building. Like this is really just one outing for a judge.

I love this movie so much! I've rewatched it a ton of times now and it's still just as good. Stoked you guys reacted to it! Karl Urban's a damn hero in acting! He's great in everything he does and he's so wonderfully ego-less.

Lena Heady has played several villains, but the first movie I ever saw her in was "Imagine Me & You," which is a queer romance movie. So she also has some range in addition to being able to play a great ruthless villain.

*Alex Garland* wrote the screenplay for *Annihilation,* but I believe the book itself was written by *Jeff VanderMeer.* He's one of my daughter's favorite writers - _VanderMeer_ that is. As you noted, *Garland* is also known for *Ex Machina* (2014). And he created the show *_Devs._* He also wrote the great film, *Sunshine* (2007) and *28 Days Later* (2002). Apparently he's quite the talent. 😏 Thanks for sharing this reaction. *EDIT:* Well just towards the end of your outro you pretty much said what I just wrote.🥴 But I guess I'll leave it up there for anyone who didn't watch it but reads the comments. The plot is a lot like "The Raid: Redemption", also a great movie (Indonesia). Highly recommend that one for the fight sequences. Kudos to Karl Urban as this version of Dredd was more realistic vs the cheesier Stallone one.

Judge Dredd originates as a British comic series in the late 1970's in an anthology comic called 2000AD. A lot of British comics at the time were a dark satirical subversion of the lead protagonist as superhero (Superman, Batman etc). It has its origins in Punk culture and is a critique of creeping authoritarianism and fascism in Britain and the US during the time of Thatcher and Reagan.

The 'day in the life' approach was a great way to introduce the character, city, and world. A harrowing experience for Anderson is a Wednesday afternoon for Dredd. If not a sequel, I would welcome a high production value mini series to explore the themes and let it breathe. The Wally Squad, Max Normal, Murder Inc., PJ Maybe, Orlok, Armon Gill, etc.

I hate that it did poorly in theaters. Thank God it found it's audience on DVD and Blu Ray plus streaming later on. You would think sales of the DVD and Blu Ray would justify a sequel but it still hasn't happened yet for some dumb reason.

Totally loved this one! always hear rumored talks about a remake or even a series or sequel but unfortunately its so underrated that it just wasnt seen as popular in the publics eye and cuz producers werent keen at all to put any money into the project which is sad as Karl Urban does an amazing job pulling off this role as judge dredd!

I watched this when it came out and i loved it. Also The Raid that came out in the same year. When Dredd came out it wasnt a big hit, but it seems like people have watched it later and has become bigger today. Some of my favorite movies has always had a bad receptions when they came out, but later had a big following: John Carpenters The Thing for example. Bad when it came out and now it is celebrated as one of the best scifi movies. They are finally making a Dredd sequal with Karl Urban. And i read the Dredd comic when i was younger and Dredd NEVER takes his helmet off. But in Sylvester Stallones version from 1995 he takes it off in like the first 5 minutes. It would be fun to see your reaction of Judge Dredd from 1995. It is NOT a good movie in my opinion, but it is what is known as "so bad its good" movie. So if you wanna laugh at a bad cheesy movie, i would recommend it.

I watched this by chance when i first got Netflix in 2013. I had seen, and enjoyed the 1990s version. I was taken aback, and surprised at how different in tone this version is. I enjoyed this take on the character as well. The 1990s one is nostalgia, this version is really well conceived and executed. I wish a sequel had been made. I feel it's more than deserving of one.

not many reaction channels know how to properly edit, that is, they still have to make the movie comprehensible to the viewer, and not just that, get the viewer in tune with the emotions of the reactors Because they're as into the film as you are.. that's the true artistry of reaction content, and y'all got it.. my only gripe used to be completely cutting out the audio when y'all are speaking, but its not all the time now.. if it were me, to be less jarring, i would L-cut under your reaction.. know what i mean? 🥂

So So So much better then the Stallone original. It upsets me we never got a sequel the cast was well done and Karl Urban KILLED it as Dredd. Samantha continues to kill it when she discuss what she did and did not like in these films. Thank you both for the upload.

It's not even close to the comics. The original source material is extremely campy and over the top. comic Dredd's po-faced seriousness purposely contrasts the crazy, punk rock, satirical world the comics are set in. Urban does alright but heck even the Stallone movie captured the real Mega-City One better than this sterile version did.

Since you liked Dredd, I recommend The Raid: Redemption and it's sequel, The Raid 2. It's an Indonesian movie with some of the best action ever put to film. If you choose to watch it, don't use the English dub version, for the love of Joe Pesci.

I loved this movie. Very close to the original source material. Judge Dredd is a comic book character first published in the UK in the 80s. Judge Anderson is an existing character from the Dredd universe. She even had a few comics of her own. After watching this, you would probably find the Stallone movie dissapointing. Great reaction.

Judge Dredd is one of the coolest characters for sure, he doesn't play around. After the minigun barrage, they go in to find Dredd in the rubble. ------ He walks out with one of her henchmen, and tosses him over the balcony. He doesn't give a rat's ass about Ma-Ma's reaction, he walks back into the darkness and just keeps on to the next crime. ------ That's Dredd. A man of few words, but he gets the job done.

Welcome to the Joe Dredd of my British 1970's 2000AD reading upbringing. Urban get's him perfectly as basically a post apocalyptic dystopian 'Dirty Harry'. Stallone's is just a brash comedic pastiche of the 'real' Dredd, although thanks to the budget of the 1995 film (2012's was a on a shoestring by today's standards) they got the larger than life over crowded Cypberpunk look of Mega City One far closer to the comics than 2012's Johannesburg with CGI mega blocks sparsely thrown in here and there ever did.

*Dredd Facts:* Dredd. Was based on the graphic comic book serie. Slyvester Stallone's Judge Dredd was a very bad movie. It wasn't dark like this film. Dredd bombed at the theaters. Actually lost money. People didn't go since Stallone's Judge Dredd left a bad taste. That's the reason there was no sequel. Since this film found it's audience from Home video. It became a cult classic. The seqyel was going to be a TV series (pay cable). The last I heard it went intoo development with Karl Urban returning back in 2017. First time I saw this movie was on the FX cable channel. Even though it was edited for TV. It was still graphic enough that I didn't mind the commercials since it was still fun to watch. Found the DVD for Dredd. Watched that. The edited out portions didn't matter. Maybe didn't see less than 5 minutes from TV that was on the DVD. Would love to see a sequel myself. Unfortunately, Karl Urban is 50. Was 40 in Dredd film.. Stallone was 50 in his Dredd film. They'd probably cast another actor to play Dredd in the sequel if it's made.

This movie is in desperate need of a spinoff series, so much better than the original. I really liked how formidable Dredd and the Rookie were against impossible odds. Lena Headys character was a bad ass villain, I expected nothing less from her, she's a true og in the game.

Video game makers 'Rebellion' bought the rights and even made a TV studio in the UK to produce a Dredd TV series, but that was back in 2017 and nothing seems to be happening now sadly

The Stallone Dredd is still good for what it is. It's a 90s action movie, and you have to remember that it was made during a time when most studios weren't willing to take a gamble on a comic book film, nor did most directors really know how to make one. I'd say it is still worth watching. It has some good actions sequences, a pretty good villain, and Diane Lane in a supporting role.

Judge Dredd comes to you from the pages of the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, 2000AD. It's absolutely zarjaz. Published continuously in the UK since the 70s. If we could get a franchise of movies or a tv series Dredd going, there's 40+ years of plots and villians from the comics to draw on. And yes Dredd 2012 absolutely is a 3D movie, it was actually shot with stereo cameras, the 3D wasn't added in post production. It's fabulous in 3D if you can get to see it in that format.
