Dregs of the City: Phoenix is a short documentary that dives into Phoenix, Arizona. This city, as well as the whole state of Arizona, has been experiencing a record-breaking increase in homelessness over the course of the last few years. From the homeless and ex-homeless people themselves, this documentary explores the reasons why.
Throughout the documentary, you'll meet a handful of different characters, success stories and the opposite, that come together as one character that is the Greater Phoenix area. A city of two extremes. A city with one of the fastest growing economies, and one of the fastest developing homeless crises.
Phoenix has an area called "The Zone" where, in most of modern history, the homeless people of Phoenix have congregated. The Zone has taken different shapes, different forms, it has been moved, destroyed, resurrected, and destroyed again. This documentary explores The Zone intimately with its residents.

I used to live out there in “the zone” or w/e. Everyone just refers to it as CAS, (Central Arizona Shelter Services), because that’s the homeless shelter all the camping takes place outside of. The reason people stay there is because it’s essentially the only place in the valley where homeless individuals have access to basic services, like meals, showers, toiletries, etc. I can attest to how dangerous it is out there. Its completely lawless. Fortunately, my wife and I only ended up being homeless for about 4 months. Fortunately, through her planning and foresight, we were able to work our way out. And I’m happy to say we haven’t struggled financially in years, and our lives have taken a complete 180° turn. And it sure as hell was no thanks to the city of Phoenix.

I have a house paid for and I would like to help a couple of these people but Ive been screwed over by them. Letting my dogs out and not caring..not looking for a job, stealing my stuff and having people come over out in the boonies looking for drugs. I cant put myself at risk to help people that have learned to take what they can get and watch out for number one. I would rather leave my rooms empty then worry about a fire from a meth pipe or cigarettes.

@@sharonnagle5782 - The majority. The the odds are they can't pull themselves up without help. Employers, landlords, and such are running backgrounds on people, and credit checks. Being newly sober isn't going to get those for you. It's an important factor in getting organizations to want to help you. Mentally ill face different challenges, and it is not just our homeless sufferers either. This country is self destructing. Very little moral, or sense of self worth, or belonging. There's a lot of unstable people out there that are very angry, and frustrated. "Normal" people too, but they aren't so likely to act on impulses. Nothing is going to change by doing the same thing, or accepting the same thing.

I've worked for 2 different clinics in Phoenix and currently work as an armed patrol officer in all the bad places; the situation is such a double edged sword and there's no right answer that works for everyone. You can't treat the drug addicts the same way you treat the "unlucky ones". You can't treat the gangbangers like the drug addicts. You show kindness to the wolves and they mistake it for weakness and act accordingly. You show brutality and eventually you become like the ones you hate. However there IS a code they live by, that if you are fair and generous yet firm and diligent they won't harm you, but to be fair I wear body armor, a gun, and look like an ex-linebacker. I try to be fair every day but it does wear on your soul the trap they are in. So much help available but most are wolves in sheep's clothing.

Listen to me. I lived right there in that very neighborhood for six years. This video that you have made beautifully captured the essence of the zone. I personally know a few of the people interviewed in there. This was the most legit piece of media that I have ever seen regarding the homeless in Phoenix. Absolutely great job. And what that one guy said about the broken light bulbs, that's exactly what it is. The mental health crisis in this state is OUTRAGEOUS. I have been to prison in Arizona four times and I can tell you that that's the rug that you get swept under if you are mentally ill and don't have a family to take care of you. It's sickening and it needs to be brought out into the light so it can be fixed. Again, great video.

you think like I do. We keep leading illegal aliens in our country and we put them up in nice places and give them food. Meanwhile, we let her own people dig their own grave. in virginia we have a place called the haven which is a day shelter where the homeless can take showers and wash and dry clothes for free so we try our best to help people get out of cronic homelessness but it is not easy and the challenges are enormous to say the least and in addition i think there is and can be severe mental illness and substance abuse along the way which accelerates the problem.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH! DO NOT PAT YOURSELF ON T HE BACK, YOU ARE FAILING ! A lot of them are very good at seeming normal, when you get talking with them for a few minutes. It's a useful skill for begging or conning. But if you offer them a job or a place and it depends on their being there at a certain time or taking a shower or being in any way ... regular ... they might not remember the next day that you offered. There's no longer-term memory or ability to plan or to carry out a plan or a schedule.
