3:03 What great thinkers have said about fasting
3:52 Fasting vs. starving
5:30 Critical things you need to know about prolonged fasting
18:33 Learn how to make insulin more sensitive!
Today, I’m going to share seven critical things you need to know about prolonged fasting. Fasting is very simple yet very powerful.
Snacking is one of the worst things for your insulin and your overall health. Food is nourishing, but to heal your body, you might be better off not eating.
Snacking causes hunger, weight gain, fatigue, and moodiness-among other potential health problems. Yet, simply not eating can create so many powerful health effects.
Throughout history, many great thinkers, including Hippocrates and Plato, have even had positive things to say about fasting.
Seven critical things you need to know about prolonged fasting (72 hours or longer):
1. Only drink water (2.5 liters), tea, and coffee-and take supplements (electrolytes, B vitamins, vitamin D, and vitamin C)
2. Take electrolytes (including sea salt)
3. Go very slow and gradual when refeeding, and avoid carbs, sugar, and a large meal
4. Don’t take apple cider vinegar
5. Do Healthy Keto when you break your fast
6. Understand the dawn phenomenon (your liver is making sugar due to insulin resistance)
7. Know when to break your fast (don’t stop when it’s uncomfortable-push through the transition phase)

@@cintiabolanos I had abdominal pain on and off for 2 years. Gone. Maybe GI needed time off to heal? Vision improved. Didn't expect that. Down from 69 kg to 64 kg, but 2 kg came back almost right away. The nice part- it's the stubborn belly fat that goes away first. Skin is drier. The attitude towards food changed In a way that I realized if I could do 5 days without food, I can easily say no to a snack, and I don't want to waste the benefits, so I eat healthier. I was doing it to reset the immune system. Edit: after intermittent fasting I stopped having headaches from red wine, which I was happy about:), but after prolonged fast - do not enjoy alcohol at all.

Keep it up. Those that don’t, want or are unable to fast won’t understand. You have to experience fasting to understand it. I’m on day 2 of my 10 day green juice cleanse and I feel great & feel no hunger. I actually cooked several foods yesterday for my family and wasn’t tempted to eat anything. It’s amazing how The Lord helped me to overcome. My fast involves food not being my God amongst so many other strongholds I will over come! In Jesus holy name! I’m also setting an example for my kids. I praise God for all the supernatural strength he is giving me. I slept like a baby and feel so energized. I’m drinking herbal tea (leaves not tea bags) water and green juice. Ingredients are ginger, parsley, cucumber, mint, green apple, celery and lemon. 🙏🏽🙌 this will be part of my lifestyle not a fad. I have also been going to the gym and doing cardio only … no weights! Happy Sabbath my beautiful people. Health is Wealth!! Glory be to God!! 🙏🏽🙌👏 Keep up the good work! You got this!!

I fasted for 17 days before, breaking it on cookies because i was out on the town with my friends (home for the holidays, i intended to do 20) and i didnt tell them. Insomnia cookies never fucking tasted SO GOOD. Anyway, im rambling (btw this was last year.) This time on day four of my 14 day fast. The goal is something called an elimination diet. I dont normally comment but felt the need to, as it's SO LITTLE KNOWN. Essentially, this is my way of finding food allergies (i didnt make up elimination diet, but i did make up this regimen from thise principles) when i break this, i will eat 3 servings of a food thats keto i love (eggs) then fast 48 more hours. If i get acne, feel brain fog, etc, ill know eggs cause brain fog and move to something else. If not, eggs will become part of what i can eat, and i wont fast. After that, ill add fish (kinds i know ill eat) meat, av, tomatoes, and lentils as my first carb because i know 100% when i eat them i feel mentally sharp Just thought id weigh in. Maybe you can see whats causing your acne. Cheers!

@@wagnerlopes5360 Well, I guess I'm not unique. I got my sister into fasting. I explained to her like Wendi said, "Once I broke the sugar addiction" things got much easier. I don't want to bore you but I was on a tractor plowing and only had about 2-3 minutes left and I was done but I was so weak, shaky and tired I thought I was going to pass out while driving. I honestly didn't know this was sugar withdrawals. My wife suggested it and brought me a Dr. Pepper. I drank it and felt like a million dollars within 1 minute. It was then I realized my problem. I explained to my sister the 24-36 hour time kind of sucks because your tempted to eat but once you start that third day for me it's like I'm on some sort of opiate. I'm so happy, full of energy, not hungry and feel like I can take on the world. I've never fasted past 4 days but I'm going to try it sometime. I still have no scientific explanation for that third day feeling.

When I was young NOBODY was fat. I’m 73. When I look back, we ate 6 times a day - breakfast, snack Of fruit or milk mid morning, lunch of soup and veg, , afternoon snack (fruit), tea (small sandwich with cheese or jam), dinner of meat and 2 veg. There were no soda drinks. We drank water, tea and occasionally coffee. I think the difference then was that we never had fast food, we walked or cycled everywhere and portion sizes were about half what they are now. If we had cake at weekends it was home made. We had sherry trifle or apple pie with double cream on Sunday. All my mother’s family continued to eat like this and have lived well into their 90’s but the next generation (mine) are getting cancers and heart trouble from about their 50’s. I await the next generation of fast food lovers.

@@glennkakely1999 It was just plain water and then occasionally a weaker snake juice. There's some guy on youtube who has like a snake diet thing. It was just some water with a little salt, baking soda (both for sodium), some cream of tartar (potassium), and some safe for consumption epsom salt (for magnesium). I would just have it if i was feeling sluggish or after a lot of activity. but be careful. That epsom salt gave me the runs a few times during it so be close to a bathroom after consuming it. But the majority was just plain water. I wouldn't recommend anyone do it for that long. stick to like 3-5-7 days honestly.

I’ve been fasting for over 10 years and my longest was 28 days. I frequently do 3-5 days. My biggest problems are after day 3 my body feels very acidic which makes my voice hoarse. I haven’t found a way to overcome that issue. Listen to your body. If you are having problems or are new to it it’s ok to break the fast and do OMAD for a few days then resume. Also you want to load up on extremely healthy and balanced food for a week before so you can store all your nutrients. Finally home made bone broth is best thing to break fast. Then a few hours later eat high quality pork and greens. Pork is my top craving during prolonged fasts. Don’t break fast with juice, rice, or fruit. Avoid carbs for a few days or else you will trigger massive cravings to binge. You’ll be so full and still want more. Doesn’t happen if you stick to broth, greens, pork. Remember to meditate and pray too. It’s a very spiritual experience. It’s a small price to pay compared to the pain Jesus experienced when he died for our sins. Jesus loves you so much!!!❤ === EDIT === I never expected my comment to get so many responses, especially about the pork and Jesus. LOL. It was easter time so I was in the mood to fast then. The reason for pork is that it’s rich in thiamine which you can deplete quickly when fasting. Pork is one of the richest sources. And perhaps Jesus never ate pork but according to his words he didn’t have a problem with us eating it. Matthew 15:11 In-Context 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” Jesus only said not to eat animals that were strangled or sacrificed to idols. I’m not aware of any Christians who believe they must abstain from pork but if it’s an issue you can just take a supplement. And Jesus really does love you. He loves everyone.

@gardyloo3093 I still have 2 days left... not gonna lie, it was rough towards the end. I started taking vitamins, without them it would have been impossible to complete it. I know every person's body reacts differently, depending on how much fat one has. I didn't have much to begin with so my body started asking for nutrients. The last 15-ish days or so were the toughest. I went through extreme fatigue, dizziness, I was light-headed whenever I'd stand up too fast, normal chores because monumentally hard to achieve, overall weakness, but... that was all before I started taking the vitamins. With vitamins, I was able to function much much better. I was still tired and at times still dizzy but not even close to how I felt before taking the vitamins. I had lots of cravings, but those are more mental then anything else, I didn't feel hunger, it was just my mind playing tricks on me. Biggest pointer I got for someone who's looking at doing a long-term water fast: have your vitamins handy! I got Centrum for women (vitamins are different between men and women, can't just get something at random, since our needs differ). Those give you all the electrolytes and minerals one needs. It's the lack of electrolytes that you feel at first... sea salt and lemon in water help but nothing can help more than vitamins. One more thing I forgot to mention: your taste buds feel EVERYTHING. And not just, but mostly your taste changes, guess it makes sense since it "purifies". Every day time I taste toothpaste, I feel like: yuuuuck, this is so sweet... I can't even imagine what it will be like going back to normal food. I'm afraid for my food choices now especially since I do have (or used to have???) a sweet tooth and I love Japanese cuisine, and there are plenty of sweet-ish sauces in it. For anyone's curiosity: I desperately craved salmon sashimi and cheese in general, but specifically melted cheese on everything (I know, I know, super healthy craving there 🤣🤣🤣🤣). Let me know if you have other curiosities, I'll gladly share my journey. Just don't look at it as a pattern, everyone will react differently. Thank you🙏

When I used to fast for mental clarity and weight loss - I was always in a great mood. I’ve slipped into depression after debilitating anxiety due to inflammation from Covid + mold exposure… after 3 days of 20 hour fasts I’m ready and have started a 100+ hour fast to clean EVERYTHING in my body. I’m nervous but determines!

Watching your videos inspired me to give long term fasting a try a few months ago. Since then I've been doing one 48 hour fast each week. My weight is down nearly 20 lbs but more importantly my chronic hypertension has improved markedly. While taking 3 prescribed meds my "normal" BP was high 130's over high 80's- low 90's. Now it's mid to low 110's over mid 70's. I'm working on getting off these meds and feeling better all the time. Thanks Dr. Berg!

@@jessicamanzano2806 there are different fasting hours you can do. The 16/8 means you fast for 16 hours and then you have an 8 hour window for eating and is the most popular. During your fast, you are limited to water, black coffee or tea with no sugar/honey. Lemon water has also been known to help boost your metabolism and is nice to add during your fasting time. My personal eating window is between 11:30 am and 7:30pm. Which i found works best for me but you can choose whatever hours suit your routine and schedule. Hope this helped :)

@@L-h8py I’m on the keto diet. In the morning I’ll go without breakfast and go for a leisurely walk approx 3 or 4 miles. Also on most evenings I’ll try my best to do the same again. I’ve been very strict with my diet no spaghetti, potatoes, rice and bread. I’ve mentioned these to you as they are the most common carbs you must go without. ( It was very difficult at first.) However to compensate I’ll fill my plate with for instance a double portion of curry to make up for the loss of not having rice. Also no alcohol and sugar is very important. Indeed I couldn’t believe how quickly I could lose weight. I have one meal per day. Prior to going on the keto diet I went to weight watchers and couldn’t lose hardly any weight at all even though I was walking many miles per day. I found this channel and the rest is history. I started my IF journey late 2018 and continued until early 2020 when the pandemic hit. I was doing IF and Keto and it did wonders to my overall well-being. I did 16 hours fasting before and lost 30-40 pounds in 3-4 months with very minimal exercise. My blood chemistry were also good. Entering pandemic, I started to lose sight of doing IF and Keto and got back to my regular diet of Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner...the pandemic was quite hard for me as a frontliner, there were a lot of stress and did stress eating again...From 2020 until early this year I gained back what I maintained pre-pandemic...then I started to feel chronic back pain, bloatedness, lethargy and my clothes were not fitting anymore, then I came to realize that I need to go back to IF...restarted again and 2 months after, I lost 25 pounds already. Now doing one-meal a day and on keto again and I have never felt any better! And this video just inspires me to do more. Haven't tried an extended fast but I will try the 3 day fast in the near future for its health benefits.

Thank you Dr B. I think “breakfast” is the most important meal of the day, especially when it’s your only meal (e.g. OMAD). People just need to stop associating breakfast with a time of the day and think of it as it’s literal meaning i.e. breaking your fast or your first meal of the day (whatever time that may be). The irony is most people that bang on about how important “breakfast” is don’t usually stop consuming calories long enough to be in a fasted state so never have a fast to break lol.

Dr. Bernie Siegel wrote of his experience as an oncologist. He felt that the GOOD patients died the quickest after diagnosis. Cancer is not always curable at certain stages, but can go into remission. Cancer patients, according to him, tend to be passive and accepting of their diagnosis. Many prefer not to change, but the one's that seek alternatives tend to have a better quality of life in the end. My mom had a different cancer. She was blasted with radiation that began in the terminal stages. We watched her suffer rather than experience some comfort in her last days. It stinks, and the very last day came as a surprise.

Eating all calories in one sitting bit much for having good digestion i dont think body is capable of having correct digestion from start to finish if you put all of daily calories in one meal, my not feel any issues now but might lead to issues later undigested food can cause many issues . Therefore i think having 2 or 3 meals a day and eating no later than 6 is more optimal, you strongest digestion is at around12-2, therefore this should be your biggest meal, breakfast is absolutely fine if you feel you want it, if not two meals per day be better, evening time should have lighter meal other than that bed time at 10 is very important

Thank you for all the informative videos! Before knowing all the science behind fasting I originally did it for personal/spiritual reasons. I was seeking some clarity and doing a lot of reflection. I just jumped in whole hog. ...man, the first 24-36hrs were brutal with the detoxing and frequent body flushing. I felt HORRIBLE! Then some time into day 2 it all started to go away, and by day 3 I felt better than I had felt in 20 yrs. ...it was only after my 7 day fast that I later looked into things and found out about keytones and keto diets etc. Now I do lots of intermittent fasting and try to regularly do whole fasts. Whenever I start to feel off in many ways, my go-to is a water-only fast. It truly does reset your body. My only regret (before knowing anything about it) was not easing out of the fast. Like Dr. Berg mentioned, I broke my fast by eating a huge lavish meal. ...hahahaha...man...it was really hard on my body.
