I would actually say the goblin king is more one of the neutral fae much like toot toot and the Za lord guard were before Cold Days. Now Butcher may have hinted or stated that there are fae kings but they are never mentioned or hinted at in the books whenever courts are mentioned in the books.

Kringle/Donar Vaderung/Odin as Kringle tells Dresden that he is of Winter. But i note no comment regarding his affiliation as Vaderung/Odin. The Erlking/Gobling King/Leader of the Wild Hunt was a guest at Harry's birthday party in the Winter court. But it was mentioned in previous books that goblins were Wildfae. And while still fae, they are outside the Summer and Winter courts. I think. Lol! It's hard to keep everything straight as there are so many books and so many short stories in this series.

Notes: Black court is not personnel-limited on purpose. They actually used to be the strongest court. The whites saw them as too much of a threat and then started educating the human population on how to kill them and why they needed to be killed (garlic, crucifixes, wood through the heart, etc.) Humans went absolutely berserk and had decades if not centuries of slaughtering the Black court. The white court was ultimately behind the demise of the black court and have gained so much power because they unleashed the nuclear bomb of the supernatural world: educated scared masses of vanilla humans and let them just rip the enemy to shreds, no matter the cost. Getting humans involved in current state is frowned upon because we have A LOT of firepower and we’re trigger happy. We are the supernatural world’s food but we go ape-sh*t crazy when cornered and scared. The humans are the quite literal fuel for the supernatural. Be it our beliefs that give things power or the supernatural literally feeding off of our flesh. Just an interesting point.

Slight correction, it wasnt the white court of vampires that encouraged the Brem Stoker book, but the White Council of Wizards who basically did a mass printing of Dracula to publish all of the glaring weaknesses of Black Court. This is because while they are far and away the most dangerous and infact most infectious of the vampires, they are most susceptible to the the stereotypical vampire weaknesses. Hell at one point there was a garlic infused holy water super soaker that wrecked so much, magic be damned. Hence while once you know the weaknesses they turn into a very dangerous threat but one that a few mortals could handle if well prepared, and something a run of the mill mortal actually has a decent chance of surviving.
@LostInNumbers
@LostInNumbers 4 жыл бұрын
@@Connor-wt4er "Hell at one point there was a garlic infused holy water super soaker that wrecked so much" If you are talking about the raid against Mavra, I think it was a paintball gun with the balls being filled with the holy water/garlic combo instead of paint, not a super soaker. (a super soaker would have been just as deadly, but have a shorter range and much less ammo than the paintball gun.)
@alexquin4001
@alexquin4001 4 жыл бұрын
@@Connor-wt4er Realistically, the only way that any vanilla mortal could beat a black court vampire if they knew its weaknesses is if the vamp is very young, the human catch it by surprise and that the person has allies. These things can move so fast that it's impossible to see them on a security camera. That's a distance of 30ft in 1/60 of a second. Most people would be hard pressed to see them let alone hit them. And if the vamp is experienced and is at least a sorcerer then we'll you either need a mob of thousands or a superhuman like kincaid.

It seems like a lot of people who pick up Coins don't hold them long, in large part because several of the Fallen appear to regard the bearers of their Coins as little more than disposable meat puppets (or possibly even worse - see Ursiel). Whether or not those represent a majority of the Fallen, their Coins _are_ the ones most likely to be available at any given time. But even if you luck out and get one of the "long game" Fallen, most of the Denarians we see spend a lot of time in the passenger seat watching their Fallen drive.

Yeah, the Werewolves in Dresden are fascinating. Running a campaign in Dresden, I have a pack of Lycanthropes like the Alphas (For people just getting into it, Lycanthropes are people that just transform mentally. Think Viking Berserkers.) And going further with the theme Marcone set, while unabashed and unrepentant criminals, they're distinctly a force for stabilizing their city. Just for the most part, they lean towards good.

You're absolutely right that this is a seriously complex series and that he takes folklore and mythology and puts his own spin on it. He's also obviously done a ton of research, because even the most non-nerdy person could pick up one of these and understand the basic story of Odin or Mab. Don't think this is really a spoiler alert, but we Colorado fans are proud to have Jim as a new resident. And his new-ish wife's corset shop in the downtown area of Denver is amazing just to browse. I am a HUGE fan of Jim butcher and I have everything he has put out over the years, its SO awesome to see this and even haven't finish it yet I plan on watching everything Dresden you have just to help more people find this modern master of the literature world. I also recommend The Codex Alera, the series was was a challenge he accept to right a good story about Pokemon and The Lost Legion. He seems to have succeeded.

I have a few points to make I'm sure others have made. 1. Dresden is not a fringe wizard. From the beginning of the series he is a full member of the council. 2. There are two additional groups of fae you missed. The wyldfae and the goblins & Goblin King. 3. The Fomor are a large power group also. 4. The Paranet and the Bright Future Society.

Man this is such a great primer on Dresden Files and being that there are no spoilers I think this has just become my go-to video for when people ask if they should read Dresden Files. I was apprehensive before I got into it but this would have hyped me up for the sheer scope of the world involved. Kudos sir.

Cool video, I love the Dresden Files, although you forgot to include the Jade vampire court which is much more secretive than the red, black or white, and often dealing with outside world through middlemen indirectly and operates throughout China, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

there are three fae courts. Winter, Summer, and Wyld. The Wyldfae don't join with either side. They're kinda rogue fae. Most of the monsters are actually one of the three types of fae. Trolls, Ghouls, Goblins, Pixies, Centaurs, Fauns, Unicorns, Ogres are all types of fae. Then there are the creatures that are not fae, such as the various types of werewolves: loup-garou, werewolves, lycanthropes, hexenwolves, wolfmen (they only appear in one of the comics), and a random wolf that can turn into a human (wolfwere?). Bigfoots (bigfeet?), naaglosii, creatures of spirit like Bob, and ghosts, demons, genius loci, gods (although at least one is connected to the wyldfae). There's also the Jade Court of Vampires, but Butcher has gone on the record to say we will never see them because of how seclusive they are. There are also two types of dragons. Dragons and dragons. Note the capital letter. I'm not sure what the difference is, but we've only ever met a Dragon. That was at Bianca's party.

I really enjoy the different Vampire factions in the Dresden Files. They remind me a lot of the different clans in Vampire: The Masquerade. Particularly, the parallels between the White Court and the Toreador are pretty strong. Also, this reminds me that Bloodlines 2 is coming out soon. Very excited for that one. Second also, I wish people would stop asking Jim Butcher about the Jade Court in his Q&A sessions. It's probably the most over-asked question I've heard. No, people, we're probably never going to see them. Maybe an emissary in the big apocalyptic trilogy. They're very isolationist and exist in a part of the world that Dresden will likely never have a reason to go to. There, answered.

Exactly, unspecific plot elements like the "Jade Court" are simply used to make the reader feel that he is reading only a small part of a much bigger world. Seems to have backfired a bit on Jim :D
@mjredder
@mjredder 4 жыл бұрын
It just seems unreasonable that a global organization like the White Council would never have an interactions with a unique court of vampires that hold sway over significant parts of the globe, especially since hundreds if not thousands of wizards would come from Asia where the Jade Court would be active. You would think that they would at least be used as background noise for things that other characters might be getting up to outside of the presence of the series' first-person-perspective protagonist, not unlike the "thing with that rahkshasa" that the White Council was involved in that was eventually linked to [a character I won't spoil here]. It's far more believable that there is a whole world out there that spins on without the involvement of Harry Dresden than that he's the linchpin of every major event that's going to take place in the supernatural world.

The Lovecraftian Old Gods do exist in the Dresden Files. They are mentioned by Warden Ramirez as being real and separate from the Outsiders in the short story Cold Case. The main villains in the short story are Cultists who worship a Lovecraftian god called The Sleeper.

This is a wonderful series that I recommend to anyone. Or would, If I knew anyone in the real world. The blasting rod, for Mr. Dresden helps him focus that fire blasts that might burn everything around him, including himself, if he did not have the blasting rod. His rod and his staff doth comfort him. Harry has trouble focusing some kinds of spells. Another great video Mr. Greene. I am rather fond of mr. Marcone. I wonder if he pronounces the "e" at the end of his name. I have known some Italians who did pronounce the "e" at the ends of their names.

Might just be me who had that problem, but in case it´s not just me: DEFINITELY read at least the second one. Book one didn´t catch me at all, had it lying around for two weeks only reading a few pages at a time. Luckily I had bought Book 1+2 at the same time, so I powered through and starting on book 2, I read through the rest of the series (mostly) one book a day/ two days.

I devoured the Dresden books after discovering them and it does sneak up on you just how much of a dense world he created here. He by no means launches into the deep end of the pool right away. That's one of the reasons I found them so engrossing. We as readers found out about these beings and places as Dresden did. If you re-read one of the later books it's surprising how many past references there are. Excellent world-building! I highly recommend this series!

This is one of my favorite series, hands down. I think one of my favorite aspects is that of the Fae. Their complex balance and power plays are so intriguing, and even the summer Fae (who are usually though of as GOOD) aren't necessarily trustworthy or "good". They have their own set of morals and values and behave so much more like a force of nature than anything else.

Fantastic summary of the most major players in the series, especially considering there are so many. Though I do think your explanation of the Outsiders gives a bit too much info for someone who hasn't read the books, explained below. For a large majority of the series so far I'm pretty sure all we know about them are that they're Lovecraftian beings from outside our reality that are against the "Law" to summon because they're like evil anti-matter. I think it takes a *long* time before we find out the outsiders, as a group, want *in*. The conflict between them and the Fae is particularly set up as a surprise twist. Editing in: That said, I want to repeat that it's a feat that you gave such a good concise summary of so many of the groups in these books, because like you said, Butcher really lets *everything* in!
