The Truth About Flexing Your Horse Left and Right

This is one of the most common solutions to fixing the suppleness in the dressage horse, however, according to United States Olympic team dressagecoach Robert Dover, it is time to throw it out of the tool box and leave it there!
This quick fix in riding leaves you riding your horse from front to back instead of back to front. Meaning you lose the hind end and engagement while trying to get the horse to bend and supple. This quick fix does exactly the opposite of what needs to be done to make the correction.
For many riders eliminating this may take a bit of work, and it helps to film yourself riding dressage to see if and when you are doing it! Good luck!

You can tell that he is a tad annoyed with this rider's reaction/resistance so he is trying to make her realize that there is a difference between correcting with say a counter-flex and seesawing. Much respect for calling this out.

Don't pick on her. Everybody has the right to be wrong and learn from that. It's just seconds after she's probably become aware she's see-sawing. We all know habits are a bitch to break, but they are breakable. And time is needed. Thank you for posting.

that is not the reason people are picking on her. While they are talking she should let go of the reins to give the horse a break while they talk. She kept holding into that position the whole time. Didn't even think to let the horse stretch out his neck...

I agree. This lady has been kind enough to put herself out there for us to learn from. Learn from it but don't bag the rider, how many of you are allowing yourselves to be videoed and critiqued lilke this?

Yeah the trainer and horse were great! I did notice while standing still, the young rider was still pulling on the reins a little too much

This is the kind of thing that happens when you put riders on horses they are really not ready for, they get over strong in their contact. This girl was hanging on his mouth the whole time WHILE SITTING STILL! This is why people today make me so frustrated. No seat, no legs, all hands. UGH!

So many riders do this on auto pilot. In the comments I suggest filming more rides if you are trying to correct it.

YES, she needs to drop the reins and let him chill, no need for contact then!

If you give with your hands even one bit in the middle of a training (even if you're standing still), your horse wouldnt hold his back anymore, so all the previous work would be gone ^^ When you are training, you can take a walk or whatever to breathe, but you never give with your hand one bit !!!
@danielle9689

Seesawing the reins, low poll and nose behind the vertical while horse is standing still is considered training? Ummmm OK. Never give with the hand one bit? A good rider has a feel for a giving hand.

Honestly I see this as less a critique of flexing a horse and more why seesawing is an ineffective reaction. The title of this video is fairly misleading
@SuzanneEMD
@SuzanneEMD 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't find it misleading at all. Seesawing is actually an easy and visual way to describe "flexing left and right."
@englishorserider10
@englishorserider10 6 жыл бұрын
Suzanne Dansby not really. When I talk about flexing left and right, I’m talking more about carrot stretches or slow lateral flexion of the neck that stretches the neck and loosens the muscles. You pull to one side then the other. See sawing is your hands alternating in a fast rhythm that jerks the nose back and forth. Not really flexion of any sort

She didn't explain herself quite well. Every now and then I do that too, I let him go left and right so that he throws his from ot legs a little more from the shoulder. It is something that I use temporarily for teaching the extended trot and then I train it out. Maybe I'm totally wrong. Still Mr. Dover, who is one of the best, has a "too loud and hysteionic" way about him.

It is really sad to listen to abusive, asshat trainers like Robert. He is transferring his childhood (parental) trauma to his students. The abuse passes on generation to generation. He could have said the same thing in 30 seconds, including positive reinforcement, instead he took 6 minutes to berate this poor rider, teaching them nothing but shame and humiliation. No one gets up in the morning and says "I'm going to be a shitty rider today!" There is no excuse for his behavior. Take note, young riders (and parents!) this is a great example of what you don't want in a trainer. It doesn't matter how many awards someone has... if they're abusive, stay away. This is the only way this industry will evolve.

You can tell a lot about a horse and rider at the standstill. Watch the horse closely while Robert is speaking. Watch the rider. She NEVER gives at all and he is STANDING with his head behind the vertical. Trainers are putting riders up on horses that are WAY too much for these kids to handle. Plain as day. Just because someone can afford the $50,000 horse doesn't mean they should ride it!!

I can barely believe that anybody would PAY somebody to stand and critisize (and nagging) them like that the whole time. sheeesh! Thank my lucky stars I dont train with Olympic team dressage coaches.

Never once does the coach highlight what the rider does do well.. all I see is her becoming more insecure then trying too hard and trying even harder and later feeling like a loser. A coach is supposed to build you up with constructive ADVICE. No need to coddle the rider and just say the nicest possible things to them, but encourage, entice, invite them to try it differently. Don't make fun of their efforts. BAD Coach
