Welcome to ETHIOPIA - my favorite country in Africa! It's so nice to be here with Deanna, our 76th country together! We have a very special story to tell you from the historic city of Harar, near the border with Somalia. There is a man named Abbas, and along with his father Yusuf, are the only people in the world who live with (and feed) wild hyenas. Every single night, they spend about $40 USD collecting raw camel and cow meat from local butchers and use it to feed their wild hyenas. They are so close with their hyenas that they have named all of them, and the bond is something I've never seen before.
This is truly a wild story from a corner of Ethiopia that you may have never heard of before, and I'm really grateful to be able to share it with you today. I'd love to hear from you in the comments below - what do you think of the hyena man? Would you ever come here? Or feed them with your mouth, if given the chance?

I've been excited to tell this story for 5 years! And I hope that you enjoyed it! If you don't mind sharing a little feedback - do you like these 'people stories' the best, where I go on a wild adventure to find a really interesting person? Or do you prefer budget content, or food content? Your feedback is really important to me, as I'm always trying to improve my storytelling. Thank you and have a lovely day!

I worked with ladies from Ethiopia when we lived in DC. My naive knowledge as a child of Ethiopia was what was shown on those TV commercials where everyone was poor and starving. These lovely ladies quickly said, "Oh no, there's so much more to Ethiopia." They took me and my husband out to an Ethiopian restaurant and wouldn't let us use any utensils. We had to eat the meal like them. OMG!! It's seriously the BEST food you'll ever eat out. I'm so sad I live too far away from one. These women were some of the nicest ladies I have ever met. I loved the experience and knowledge about their food and culture they gave us. I'll never forget it.

Good work Drew. I am an Ethiopian American who grew up in Ethiopia and moved to the US as an adult. I recently got back from a trip to Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Think of Harar’s walled city of Jagol, as the Medina of Marrakech. The narrow lanes, stalls, spice markets and friendliness of residents and colorful attire as well as the food is eerily similar. I disagree with the statement you made regarding Yemen being the birthplace of coffee. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and the term coffee comes from the word Kaffa, a region in South Western Ethiopia where coffee was first found. You were fortunate to have tasted Harrari coffee; it’s the smoothest, fruity variety unmatched by any coffee in the world. If you plan to visit Harare again, please make a pilgrimage to Kulebi Gabriel. Similar to Teressa of Avila and Mary of Fatima, you will experience renewal of faith and witness miracles of healing. The best time to go is mid December. Thanks again for sharing a piece of Ethiopia with thousands of your followers. Find your motto of conquering your fear and experiencing life admirable and inspiring.

Jesus Christ wants a personal relationship with you through the Holy Spirit, not religion and blind faith. You see, we all have sinned, and have broken God’s law (The Ten Commandments). Wrong doing deserves justice and must be punished (just like how a criminal has to pay for the crime they have committed) but God saved us from the eternal punishment of our sins by sending His Son Jesus Christ, fullness of God in flesh, a perfect, sinless sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins by dying on the cross and resurrecting, so that we may have everlasting life. It is all finished and now for you to accept the free gift of grace, you must repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus Christ and Bible says that His Blood will cover all of your sins, you will be forgiven, saved from eternal punishment, and be given everlasting life. By faith you will receive the Holy Spirit, become born again, know Jesus personally and He will transform your heart and clean you from the inside out. Turn away from sin, read the Bible, pray for the Holy Spirit to fill you and change you, obey the Word. Much love and God bless you!

Beautiful video. Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world. One of the first Christian countries. Islam and Judaism reached Ethiopia very early too. Although the majority of Ethiopians are “Orthodox “ Christians, Muslims are also a big number of Ethiopian society. The “ Bete Israel” are the Ethiopian Jews and are very small in number compared to the christians and muslims. There are also around 80 ethnic groups. That’s what makes Ethiopia a very unique, diverse and complex country. For the most part, the Christians, muslims, and Jews live in harmony. Some ethnic conflicts, but the vast majority have no issues regarding religion/ethnicity. Thank you Drew for this very informative video!

Another fabulous adventure with Drew and Deanna! She is a treasure~ I was amazed at the short shot of the boy with sky-blue eyes! (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="102">1:42</a>) I'd love to hear the story of how he got those eyes, and if he's considered a rare god or are the villagers afraid of him?

Hi Drew Binsky! I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for your visit to Harar City in Ethiopia. As a fellow Somali, I am truly grateful for your efforts in showcasing the beauty and culture of our people. Your vlogs have not only been entertaining but also enlightening, providing a platform for the world to learn about the rich heritage and traditions of Harar and its residents. Your dedication to capturing the essence of different cities and connecting people from diverse backgrounds is truly commendable. Thank you for being an ambassador of cultural understanding and inspiring us to appreciate the beauty of our world. Keep up the fantastic work, and know that your videos have made a positive impact on many lives, including mine. Wishing you continued success in your endeavors. You are the best! Furthermore, me and hyena man share the same name.

What do you mean "our people". Harar isn't Somali.

Harar was part of the Adal dynasty, a Somali dynasty that lasted for centuries so it makes sense we are similar. Love the hyena men, so unique and Harari people. Much love from here🫶🏾
