Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country in the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year.
Over the last 2 days, I have explored every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa.
Here are some of my quick realizations:
- It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105).
- Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (second) and English (third, if any at all).
- There is a LOT OF SECURITY everywhere -- police/military guards standing on every corner (literally) with giant guns strapped to their backs. It is kind of crazy and very intimidating, but safe.
- About a quarter of Djibouti's population (~250,000 people) are living in extreme poverty, which is more extreme than you'd think given that this country is so expensive. A massive contrast between rich & poor.
All of my thoughts on this mysterious country, and more, are in this video. Have you ever been to Djibouti?

My country. I was born there, stayed in an orphanage for three years, and was adopted in France when I was three years old. I have never had the opportunity to return, I would like to find my mother, and that's why I'm going back in 2019, it will be the first time since I arrived in France. I am very excited to return, just hear the name of my country I can cry, I love you Djibouti

Take my lesson mate They Speak Somali Somali and more Somali as a native language also the second native language is Anfar, the French and Arabic are only spoken by some of the people who live the cities.

Thank you for visiting Djibouti and giving us your insights. Living in Djibouti is indeed expensive but what you don't know is that most of the working class are paid a higher salary compared to other countries in Africa. So, technically known that the GDP per capita of Djibouti is highly ranked among african countries the purchasing power of the local working ( 'cause unemployement is very present in the country) population is also proportionally high. Which results, in many cases, that visitors coming with a different currency struggle a lot, especially with the dollar, which also explains the minimal tourism in Djibouti. With that being said, those salaries are often taken back by the government in the forms of bills (electricity, communications, education....) which explains some the common cases of poverty. Corruption. Ps: if you didn't visit the back country and the coasts you missed a lot mate.

It's sad you only went to Djibouti city. Djibouti is much more than that! The sea is incredible and there are lots of others beautiful places inside the country! Concerning the taxi price, sorry for you but since you were a tourist, you paid the high price! Everything there is about negotiating! It's almost like a game. I remember we often paid only 4 or 5 euros for the cab! So yeah, you would definitely go back and explore more!
@akamekonigsmann8435
@akamekonigsmann8435 Жыл бұрын
5 euros ????? I used to pay a little bit under 3 euros (500 fdj). Just stop a cab, say ''It's 500 or nothing'' and most will accept lol. If they say no, ask the next one and he will most likely accept (If you are travelling within the city that is)

I’ve been there, and agree that is is crazy expensive. Waking through the slums near downtown was very fascinating though. We only went there, since we were visiting Ethiopia, which is a neighboring country. Don’t use use Expedia to book hotels.....you’ll only get $200+ options

as a Somali I consider Djibouti my second country, I love Djibouti and the brothers and Sisters who live there, they are kind and generous people. Thanks for your Video but you should not disrespect the country by showing dirt toilets and whatever, I think you visited the poor areas or the ghettos, why didn't you visit the 5 star hotels?
@elhombreconsciente6882

Because you are not supposed to visit 5 star hotels to see clean toilets, and also because 5 star hotels there cost 400€ a night
@Dhfhucudu
@Dhfhucudu 7 ай бұрын
Your logic is amazing. He showed the toilet of his hotel because THAT HAPPENED to be the hotel he ended up staying in. He didn’t show it with some premeditated agenda. It’s also incredibly biased to say a good part of a country should be shown over the bad and it’s disrespectful to show the bad, when it shouldn’t matter which part is shown. Both r based on the truth and both r simply putting a mirror to the country.

The reason that there are so many checkpoints and police is because Djibouti is a very popular place to have foreign bases in. It's close to most of east Africa as well as the Middle East, and is close to the Red Sea, a place of a lot of pirate raids. Djibouti gets paid a lot for the bases
