There are a few things I need to address in this video. First, what I was attempting to illustrate about “The Ugly Truth” of modern fashion trends is that simply under the current model there is no such thing as enough. I also think that a lot of people use fashion to feel as though they are better than others and to act snobby. This is also a very ugly truth of the matter in my opinion. Last, my captions thought I said ‘fashion nymph’ and ‘johns enthusiast’ haha kind a funny to type that out. I meant ‘Fashion mf’ and Jawnz enthusiast’ which are two terms used as slang to describe someone who is just really into fashion. I am curious to see what everyone thinks of this video.

With regards to building a unique style, the problem is that we are too focused on aesthetics and on fitting inside a certain "box" of aesthetic that we get caught up within a particular niche, instead of being able to piece together parts of different aesthetics in the unique puzzle that represents each unique character. You are fed with products and well put outfits so much, that you try to look like the best stylist of that particular aesthetic, not like yourself

feels like today's the first time you see so many people dressed identically and yet each believes he/she's wearing something groundbreaking and unique

the worst feeling is when the style i’ve loved for years becomes popular.. silly i knowww but the problem is people are now gonna think i am ‘untrendy’ and ‘behind the times’ when in reality im just wearing what i like

i think that the ugly truth is that with trends moving so fast and having such short lifetimes, people who genuinely enjoy some trends will have nowhere to go. Be it parachute pants or ties, people will be accused of copying trends when an item is in style but once these trends fall out, they will be seen as "out of style" and "not with the times". Basically, I'm saying that no matter if you wear "trendy" or "not trendy" clothing, you will still be perceived negatively by many, just in different ways.

when i hear the idea of "finding your style" like there's an end goal, i don't think that can ever be the case. as you grow and change your idea of your style changes with you. the ugly truth is that companies will take advantage of that. but the beautiful truth is that life will be filled with new ways to express yourself thru your fashion

Fashion has always been a game of “how dare these people dress in MY niche trend that makes me more unique and therefore superior to them? I’m gonna start dressing in a new way.” We as consumers have enabled this at every socioeconomic level. I think it’s happening faster now because trends move into the mainstream rather quickly because of social media. Fashions early adopters (and snobs) rely on the exclusivity of the trend they dress in, so they need to cycle through more rapidly to set themselves apart.

Wearing what you like and what fits you well will always be better than trends! But mixing in something “of the moment” is always a nice accent to your personal style.

The big issue I believe is that too many people want to look a certain way in order to feel validated. Instead of branching out and doing their own thing people just copy what the most influential people are doing.

I find it weird because I live in a huge city [Sydney] yet I rarely to NEVER actually see anyone wearing things that are "viral trendy" and online it's only a handful of people actually wearing them. [for specific items, things like loafers and sweater vests are always going to be around]. all of this stuff is very online-only

I think one big reason trends are so consumed nowadays is because they are promoted as "jump on this train before others do". They are made to seem like these things are unique and new, but eventually they just become oversaturated and we get "bored" of the trend, leading to overconsumption. Fashion enthusiasts constantly wanting to be "unique" is what usually drives these trends forward... I think the correct way to look at fashion isn't to "be unique", but more so take whatever you like personally, regardless of popularity.

i feel like today so many people are hyper fixated on aesthetics and looking like a “walking” aesthetic. i was a culprit of this, i tried to fit into one aesthetic or the next cool or popular looking one and i was miserable because i felt like i couldn’t find clothes that really expressed all of me. Then i realized that i’m an individual, one style of clothing wouldn’t work because my personality was too big for that. so i started mixing styles and genres that defined my identity. i feel like a log of people don’t realize that though, and that’s why trends move so fast

I honestly use trends to find new cool things I might like. This year I didn’t like any of the actual clothes such as the vampcore or the ironic tees but I loved the footwear such as sambas and salomon a lot. I also like that bell bottoms came back but that’s not really a trend

I was actually speaking to a friend about this several weeks ago. We both agreed that fashion trends are moving extremely fast as well. We have been into fashion for years ourselves and have been settling into one of the "trends" we found best for ourselves years ago while building up on it instead of hopping from trend to trend so quickly. We find the current trend pace entertaining yet tiring.

The most important thing right now is not getting caught up in one style/trend. I think we can all profit off this overflow of fashion trends going on right now, picking things up from trends we like and leave the stuff we don't, without getting influenced too much by the "public consensus" on a style aka whatever is trending on tiktok, and making it work in our own wardrobe

I know you said that saying “it’s tik tok” is a cop out but i definitely think it is. Style TikTokers have a direct financial incentive to lean into new style trends, trends that won’t last, and absurdist fashion. They’re paid by fast fashion companies to essentially be their mouth pieces and continue pushing new and changing trends. They also push more flashy and crazy fashion that clearly isn’t timeless or going to last in an effort to get more views. Style isn’t driven by individualism anymore. It’s driven by $ and status to fit in with influencers who were told by companies what they want to be trendy

People don’t like to be realistic anymore and don’t think about their wardrobe in a daily wear sense. Either they like to have more and more or they don’t think about what they truly like to wear/what’s realistic for them to wear on a daily basis. Ty drew for the content very informative 😎

I recently got into fashion maybe last year and i’ve been experimenting with lots of clothes and finally finding my style but left with lots of clothes i don’t wear anymore. Although going to donate them to charity shops i still feel somewhat guilty of my waste, “the bigger picture” section of the video made me feel less guilty and more comfortable with my fashion journey. This video is amazing (I even sent it to my anthropology professor). I think the ugly truth about fashion trends is that they will always prioritize certain groups of individuals - almost always skinny and rich people -, like the rise of y2k recently in fashion shows. Also, the fact that we, as social human beings, are always trying to fit in a group even when we tell we're not, so we try so hard to fit in a certain aesthetic or niche or whatever, and that ""demands"" buying new things because you are never satisfied with the way you look, because you are constantly bombarded with new items or new micro trends within the niche.

Can't wait for everyone to focus on their own individual character and character outfits. This "everything trending" is a step towards that

Also, the production of clothes ramped up because of social media, in my opinion. Because people started seeing themselves more, they became more self-conscious. And we broke the rule of comparing ourselves to other people. With that, people started consuming more for the 👍s. And fashion brands, particularly fast-fashion brands, met and meet our shallow demands.

I barely got into fashion in the beginning of 2021. Still learning and understanding of the concept of fashion. How I see it as the “bad” is the amount of trends come and go like shoooo. For me it’s way to much to try to catch up, but shoutout to anyone that can catch up more power to yall. 👏🏾👏🏾 Also it can be over saturated. Ugly truth is no matter what style you have on, be happy about it. Don’t need to get approval or some sort of recognition in front of you, let it happen on its own and own it like a runway. Also if someone hates on your style is because they don’t want to see you smile and enjoy what you wear they’re called haters for a reason.

For a very long time, I was not interested in fashion. I thought fashion was all about consumption and feeling uncomfortable to be pretty (that tends to be expected for women). Now, I feel very interested. I'm learning silhouettes that I like, fabrics that work for weather where I live, colors that are good for my skin, and ways to balance feminity and masculinity. My goal is to have a capsule wardrobe in the future, once I've learned enough.

Great vid Drew, your final point was a hard one to put into words so don’t worry about the delivery too much. I share your interest surrounding the anthropology of consumers, including myself, and I often find it difficult to not over consume. Love your insight and your positivity in general 😊

I kinda just stopped caring about fashion, I realized in hindsight, clothes really do not matter and people who are so concerned about their clothes and what’s in style all the time tend to be the most miserable people. You’re absolutely right about this topic. There is too many trends and too much clothing being produced. We clearly don’t need that much clothes. I mean...I have ten sneakers four dress shoes and a lot of socks. And I wear my favourite sneakers 98% of the time.

My problem with the fashion industry is just my problem with consumerism overall which is just that we engage in it with such disregard for the process or the importance of accumulating or procuring new goods. We are so numb to receiving new things that we cycle through trends monthly giving old clothes to charity, selling them or letting them sit in our closet. We’re filling up our homes with things that don’t matter to us. I realised I have so many clothes that mean nothing to me, I started to forget my sense of personal style (which I was desperately trying to buy. Then when each new item came it felt like wasn’t enough, didn’t capture me enough), I had so much stuff that felt like it wasn’t how I wanted to dress. I considered how I wanted to dress too expensive and inaccessible. Actually the amount I was spending on trendy items here and there could add up to one meaningful, lasting, well made and ethically sourced piece every two months or so. The hardest for me is seeing what others are wearing and wanting to participate in trends. Feeling left behind. I’m enjoying using the clothes I have and saving up each month to buy an item on my wishlist. I finally bought a hysteric glamour jumper a few months ago on my wishlist at a good price and it was really rewarding. I forgot that clothes used to be bought as presents or as a treat. I haven’t bought anything in a few months and Im looking forward to my next purchase, and im also enjoying wanting things, not buying them straight away, and then accepting it’s ok not to have them. I will never have every item I want and I can’t try to solve that by buying lots of fast fashion items to fill the void. It’s extremely hard and unknown to us but I think more people are coming around to it. really enjoyed this video :)

To me maybe the ugly would be that the creative people rarely get the recognition they deserve. It's usually big brands stealing indie designers' projects, celebrities bringing niche trends to wider audience being credited for coming up with new things, etc. The flip side of the turbocharged speed of trends is that we're forced to curate our own outlook. I honestly love that, this gives me more creative freedom than I had 20 years ago in junior high. And the favorite animated movie? My childhood classics: Mulan, Lion King, Pocahontas. I think personal style comes from rewearing clothes and making them pieces that are characteristic for oneself! I think its scary that people feel the constant need to hop onto every trend and overconsume. I hope that in the future the majority of people will find out which trends they truly like and try to be more conscious about their consumer decisions. That doesnt mean no one should ever buy or try out a new style or trend, but it means investing in staples and consciously thinking about the wear they would get out of that item and how to corporate it into their wardrobe :)

this was very eye opening! i'm so mind blown. the ideas that were mentioned are so good.

Trends got me spending money pretty blind on most of the time low quality/un-styleable pieces that did not fit my body well. But in doing so made me actually pay attention to fashion because I asked myself why did these things not look as good on me, and slowly began learning about body types and aesthetics and eventually used all that to developed my own personal style. Which is something that will look great on you and remain looking great on you whether on trend or off trend, expresses yourself confidently, and won't bend to any influences beside your own. (Funny how refusing the influence of trends will actually make you stand out and be memorable too) A lot of people are still in the earlier phase of discovery and it's much easier to copy what looks good on other people or the newest and the hottest rather than experiment themselves. So even if they do look everyday or played out it's very understandable since most people just wanna go outside looking put together rather than spending all this time developing their own personal expression.

Hyper-consumerism is really the end goal of these companies and why we are going through trends so fast and purchasing so many things we don't need. There's a reason advertising spots cost A LOT of money now, why Netflix is incorporating ads into their streaming service, and why KZfaq is only going to keep adding more ads to every video. (we'll long for the day of just two skippable ads very soon). Also part of the reason that even though cost of living has gone up, people aren't cutting back as much as predicted and we are still spending on luxury products. I've made a concentrated effort to only buy versatile basic articles of clothing lately if I am going to make a clothing purchase. I've dabbled in a few trends such as New Balance, but everything else I take a look, appreciate the look, and then just move on. It doesn't make sense to try and keep up with every new trend because as soon as you get that item it'll be old news by the end of the year, or sometimes by the end of the month. #pvv - Shrek 2 is the most hilarious movie and I still like to watch it sometimes lol. Besides that, Finding Nemo, Land Before Time, Iron Giant are all classics for me. On the more grownup sideI loved Princess Mononoke which I randomly saw on streaming recently.

Contemporary fashion trends are probably based in human mass psychology: Some kind of complicated combination of wanting to be special (staying on top of trends), not being excluded from the pack (keeping up with some of the trends). All in order to attract potential mates. That would be my guess.

I agree with a lot of the points made, especially with the overconsumption. I often find myself interested in another piece after just acquiring a piece, and it hit me that there really is no need for the overconsumption of similar products. If you already have one tee that has a similar graphic to another shirt, the composition of the fit would articulate the same ethos, regardless of the graphic or art found on the shirt. The one area I've started to personally look into more is pieces I don't incorporate or even simply just taking breaks from the entirety of hunting for new pieces. What I've found more enjoyable personally is going out and stumbling across random shops that have vintage wears or jewelry and genuinely one of a kind wears you wouldn't find on tiktok or social media, or on someone's mood board. There is so much opportunity for finding more unique pieces without the aid of a tiktok brand, and it's hard to realize that with the forefront of gen-z being social media influence. And I'm not saying I'm perfect myself, I often still will fall back into the bad habit of continuous searching and looking, but I've realized more and more when you've got enough jawnz, there is no need to keep searching.

Sooo true. Enough only feels like enough for a fleeting moment until its not anymore. It’s tiring & costs a small fortune. Sometimes I enjoy it other times Im sick of it & just want it to stop. imo the ugly truth of the fashion industry is that trends haven't really existed for a very long time. The fact we can predict trends in general means that its not us making the decisions and its not the designers either, nothing is water drops making rings if its predetermined. The whole reason that we had trends in the 1800s (to use your example) is because the extreme wealthy people (royalty) had a talented tailor that was tasked with creating somthign FOR THAT PERSON, it was that influencual person that started the drips to their friends and their friends and their friends and it became a 'trend', nowadays nearly all fashion and style is not made for the individual, it's made for the masses, so instead of a trend growing, it's forced on us. I think the real start to this was Dior's new look or maybe Chanel's suit that were both so pervasive in their respected times that it forced the industry to work a little faster, which then indirectly catalysed ready-to-wear which worked faster and eventually catalysed a more fashionable high street which caused luxury to work faster again to create a world where everything is so quick and forced that it's no longer able to sustain the growth time frame that a 'trend' really needs to have cultural significance

One thing that is kinda cool to think about is fashion in 2016/17/18 when people were wearing hypebeast things and just that. They weren't changing their style every week/month

Working a bit in the e-commerce business, the the question I always think about even when I saw a lot of garments a day. Where are peoples authenticity? An « individual » is something that can subjectivity be viewed in a way of that one person dressing but if you look at those micro trend communities damn near everybody dresses in codes. Attitude towards hyper expressionism or trying to be different for no reason makes no sense because at the end of the day it’s just clothes. It’s the impact that makes the impression on people. What you represent and what truth you want to show to the world. Not to conform into something your not.

I think the reason there’s so many different trends and cores and genres and so on is bc when a certain trend try to get you in this “box” someone may realize that that can’t obtain that trend or genre of clothing so it will spark another trend that may be a little more affordable.Or maybe a little easier to get your hands on.But since from a lifestyle standpoint everyone can’t afford everything that other people buy it just keeps getting added on to.If that makes much sense.And favorite animated movie gotta be lion king(goat movie)

The "it will never be enough" really hits home. I'd like to think that I don't give into consumerism as much because I don't follow trends, I just like what I like. But does it really matter in the grand scheme of things when I find something new that I like every. single. day. just due to the sheer amount of fashion news and content that I consume? As for the question at the end: As someone who works in Animation, I highly recommend Turning Red, Arcane, and Primal: Tales of Savagery :)

I think the breakdown of the stigma and uniformity present in clothing through previous generations along with social media and the rise in the general wealth of households has allowed this new era of consumer culture to arise within the new generations…. Opposed to previous generations diversity In style is praised instead of looked down upon and ideas can spread rapidly through social media.

I think in regards to the speed in which fashion trends blow by every day is in relation to how accessible and quick social media changes. Humanities plight is that no matter how much we have it will never suffice.

Some good ideas Drew. However I think no matter what humans want the next best thing. It’s not just in fashion but literally every industry. Also, I think we should embrace trends as a good thing. I am personally proud to go through numerous trends and accept them for effecting pop culture in a major way. And the fact I participate in it is awesome.

The environmental and human costs that have accompanied the greater democratization of fashion far outweigh amy good that a passing trend could ever provide. It is insane to think that rapid increases in the speed that trends come and go is anything more than a massive misallocation of resources that could have been better spent on food, housing, environmental stewardship, etc

the ugly truth is that all these trends die one day and people saying certain items are “ugly” knowing that it will trend again and they will wear it

in terms of fast fashion I think there is a threshold that the speed of trends can take where the fast fashion brands can recognize and reproduce a trend. If a trend is going too fast it's not going to speed up the production of new clothing because it is already too fast for fast fashion to keep up. If anything these microtrends make it so that fast fashion brands aren't recreating as many styles. That's not to say less clothes are made, just that not all trends get picked up on and mass produced.

Agree big time- I was gonna comment this and you kinda went into it, but I think some of it is contentment, not being happy with what you got already (although inevitable if you’re interested in fashion you’re gonna dip into the market for new stuff). Another thing which not necessarily the case for everyone but I think for some it’s being comfortable with themselves, some think if they hop on the latest trends they will be accepted more or look more important than they are whereas not enough develop their own style and then take inspiration from different bits. But then not being afraid to rock old trends too

This is why I've just stuck with a minimalist Japanese inspired look for the last like 4 years. Easier just stick to a uniform

As someone who is a Fashion Design student and working in the industry, I've had this constant feeling of too much. It feels like everything is too much, too fast, and too wasteful. Not to mention lux just isn't what it used to be. Price no longer is a signifier of quality so it's like a guessing game on what is a worthy investment which worsens the wastefulness

My favorite animated film is one that not many people have seen. Lupin: III the castle of cagliostro. It's Hayao Myazaki's first feature film and has an incredible retro charm to it. If you want to see some gorgeous retro animation look up the car chase scene.

Mulan! Eternally love that film. I feel like I have my set items in my wardrobe. I get the best quality I can and just rotate HEAVILY. I take note of runway trends I like and incorporate them into my style but I don't follow trends SPECIFICALLY for the reasons in this video. I feel like my style is personal, evolves, but is outside trends. Trends, to me, are expensive and wasteful. With building your quote on quote “own style” is mostly trending items like I personally pick stuff out of trending items and mash it up with stuff thats my own expression. Our society is so focused on being the same, screw being the same I wanna be different. Personally trending styles aren’t your style it’s a way for someone to be “hey I’m staying up to date with everyone else” build your own style, create styles out of your mind not social media, yea you can look at them but don’t get caught up on it.
