In this video I discuss what I believe are the best and worst trends in streetwear/menswear/Instagram fashion over the last 8ish months. This video is entirely opinion-based and is more focused on what I've been liking over the last year and what I haven't been liking over the last year or so. Absolutely no shade to anyone who likes the things I dislike, and I hope that sentiment is felt vice versa.

There's also a lot of gatekeeping with the Jordan 1s, you can't wear mids, you need a certain colorway, you can't lace them too tight, you better not dare crease the toebox... It's too many rules and fashion is supposed to be about expression.

Mids are generally released in ugly colors. Certain colorways are better than others and if you do lace them too tightly, they can look ugly. Bottom line, if you make them look ugly, they look ugly, even if it is your "expression".

so you're saying you are not buying the shoes you like because you are scared that people will call you out for e.g. an unpopular colorway or a creased toebox? if so, you are paying too much attention about what people think about you. wear mids if you like them, wear odd colorways if you like them, lace them the way you want. on top of that, a creased toebox is a sign of respect: you wear your shoes, just like it was intended.

I totally feel you on the "wearing Carhartt feels inauthentic" thing. I'm not a blue collar worker or something. But the thing that I love about Carhartt is that --- because of their original purpose/target consumer -- it's all super utilitarian. Their jackets and pants look good while also genuinely getting me through tough weather and lasting forever, (while being somewhat affordable, especially if buying second-hand) and for that, I'll always appreciate them.

I like that you understand fashion really is a dynamic between your identity and simply what’s accessible. There are people who think to be into fashion you need to have a certain piece or brand. I think you’re right in that wearing Carhartt can come off as cosplaying as a blue collar worker. However, I’ll add my caveat that the market is oversaturated with poorly constructed garments with synthetic materials (especially when it comes to women’s fashion). Workwear brands act as the antithesis to this, with a good amount of natural fibre, and often their outerwear is fully lined 👌 You make good points about the trend of Dunks/Jordan 1s too. The array of colours, and increasingly cheap construction signal to me that Nike does not intend for the current runs of these shoes to be lifelong staples.
@DrewJoiner
@DrewJoiner 2 жыл бұрын

Ngl the trends that are overplayed and oversaturated often falls from grace and nowadays brands don’t care about “legacy” anymore, whatever profits profits. Same thing is happening w the NB ALD collabs

You 100% nailed it about the Jordan 1’s, and likely with a lot of other clothing items/accessories that are currently popular. “Commoditized” summed it up beautifully. Then when you factor in the exploitation of the people who manufacture them, and then buy them, it’s hard for me to justify buying them. That said, I can also empathize with someone who experiences an emotional reaction when they see a colorway of a Jordan 1 or dunk that they LOVE. And if so, I’m not one to judge.

Also-on the pre order revelation. That’s EXACTLY what would happen if culture and technology combined to dismantle the fashion monopolies and give local designers and apparel/footwear engineers the access to tools that have us buying from small businesses. It would bring culture back to fashion the way food culture represents different families, tribes or cities. We should be wearing our local designers the same way we eat and patron other businesses locally. And like you said-because of technology the access we have to one another is endless and goes far beyond what’s “local”. If we started making technology that favored a market that’s less industrialized, the possibilities are truly endless.

I’ve always been into Jordan 1s and dunks but they’ve been so overhyped recently that it’s kind of annoying, I just really like the silhouette of the shoe. I also wear my dunks/sb’s to skate a lot so I have a lot of them.

Growing up in Detroit my mother had me in Carhartt for my early years and i don't remember any of it. But now that i'm getting into skating it's partly long lasting clothes and part fashion, and that's just in general not just with Carhartt

Nothing but facts. I got into the Jordan 1 wave back in 2017, and back then no shoe really went above $500. Now every Jordan 1 is $400-500 the day after release. Thankfully I was able to get my grails before all this happened. Because of this channel I started to get into NB, Dickies, and even the small brands.
