Thank you Dr. I spent 10 years in a manager-like role trying to get to director at a company. When you are a woker bee, especially one that performs at a high level it can be easy to retreat to those tasks/habits that got you to your new role. However, as you point out, a brand new set of skills (planning, delegation, etc..) need to be built up as well as letting go of the detail [micro-management] of your team. Great tips.

So long big boss likes you, you can be promoted as quick as possible. That is our company’s policy.

Wonder if that’s possible - companies like that you have experience managing people before promoting you to even manager…would love to know as well?

Not really possible unless it’s a small company I guess tell me why you would like to be a director vs a manager

@@reginamemoriesforever-vc8ql challenging but not completely impossible. You need to be a very senior level IC with lots of project management background. Even then it's going to be a difficult sell without a few years of people management under your belt. Influencing projects and influencing people are two very different skillsets. Also directors have much more people drama to deal with than front line management. Front line management are caught between their direct reports and bosses. Directors have to keep executive management and senior management staff at bay, and also often have to influence across organizations to remove blocks or resolve politics. The higher up the corporate ladder you climb, the more drama there is due to the increasing weight of decisions being made.

Becoming a director means drinking deeply from the kool-aid. Its the equivalent of making a deal w/ amorality. No judgement; Just make sure you know that…

I am an individual contributor as a sr engineer. I have declined multiple promotions to move into leadership even though I am doing leadership activities anyways just not officially. I have no ambitions to manage personalities and baby sit entitled peoples wants and desires and conflicts and politics and on and on. I realized the further you move up into the leadership club it’s just a high school popularity club and you get to see half of them got there not from merit and now you have to deal with egos and imbecility. If you’re in corporate have the FIRE plan financially independent and retire early. You will realize that in corporate today you are a wage slave, half your time at work is not even work it’s meetings about meetings ( I always say that today we talk more about work than doing the work) and trainings and indoctrination and the more you produce the more you’re rewarded with work.

Nowadays a lot of directors are useless. They dont know anything other than to cut cost. Waste alot of company money by having a lot of them.
