Quite fascinating! Here's man who not only played the piano supremely well but thought about it a great deal. Compelling reflections. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I love Weissenberg's Petrouchka. It is so driven, so dynamically contrasted, so dry in certain moments. It has the quality, necessary for all 'touchstone' performances, that as hear it, you cannot believe it could be played differently, or better, by anyone else. Stand-alone timeless quality. The interviews are also interesting, showing his multi-culturalism, overall level of education, refinement.

You should hear the Rubinstein performance at the carnegie hall. Where did this Rubinstein come from ? It's unbelievable!

Very intelligent & lucid, with a sort of dry charm,an excellent description and background of his film.I enjoyed it especially cos this pianist is among my least favorite,(i detest most of his recordings and the one time"live"was a disaster),and this gives me a new respect for one who was obviously a fine artist in his way.Another, unlikely dimension has been given to AW recently by the release of his jazzy parafrases of Charles Trenet(played by M-A Hamelin),unexpectedly enjoyable!

Got you... Hamelin's versions of Weissenberg clearly show he was a fan of this pianist, one of the precursors of 'super-virtuoso' pianism. But it's as if you prefer lush red wine... and Weissenberg comes up with a super-dry, crisp white. Not to your taste at that time. However in the longer term (eg a decade or so between hearings) you realise you like a brilliantly realised dry white just as much as a gorgeously, impressively realised red.

It's not true what he said! I learned "Petrushka" when I turned 56 and the same year I learned Rach 3. So I'm making my money by being a surgeon and maybe I can learn things quick because I reset my mind after music conservatory at Medical School and than I didn't rehearse for more than 10 years., Now I rather do not have that much time to prove and to rehearse. Time is running out but at least enough time to learn even this beautiful piece, because I always loved it and when I was young, I felt too much shy and devote ("Oh , only great pianists know how to play I'm not good enough")-...Bullcrap. Just play what you love. Whatever it may be! Music is a language!
