Alot of the civilian audience here just hear the cadence singing, but they don't really understand is that when you add an entire platoon's heels hitting the ground in unison with these cadences, it increases it ten fold and motivates the shit out of a Marine.

Most of them grew up in the church. Not just Sundays… They were there for Tuesday prayer meeting. Wednesday fellowship. Thursday prayer meeting. Sunday morning services and worship, and Sunday night worship and fellowship. Black churches have the most incredible and beautiful history of community and THE best music in all of Christianity. That joy can only come from generations of oppression and a mixing of their varied tribal backgrounds mixed with the Scots Irish and French influence they were surrounded by in the Deep South for so long. It all adds up to a glorious way to teach and instill discipline in God’s favorite human being: A United States Marine.

Had we had him as a senior drill instructor on drill competitions we would have taken 1st place.

My favorite DI (Sgt. Bryson) often marched the platoon across the parade grounds at Parris Island just before dark. It was quiet, somber and peaceful. His low, slow cadence fit perfectly with the quiet crush of our boot heels on the tarmac. Unforgettable! And we won the battalion marching trophy as well. Fifty years later and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Parris Island (Nov '92 - Feb '93) was an experience never to be forgotten. The hours and hours our Senior had us on the parade deck culminated in us winning Drill. I guess that made up for the handful of times we were late for chow. There's a difference between 'hypnotic' and just 'ok' as far as cadence goes. A really good cadence will have you marching thru your hunger and tired feet. I will never forget the smell of PI, my first night and last day of leaving that Island forever.

Bertrand not only saved a handful of recruits from a crazed driver who tried to drive over a platoon but he could bring tears to your eyes with his rendition of Amazing Grace in church on Sunday. This makes me tingle inside. Don't ever feel much emotion inside since I could remember but it must be nostalgia. I was in ten yrs before an injury put me out and everytime I come across that orange dial soap bar it takes me back straight to boot camp in 2003. Props to my boys Ssgt Brandon Curry. We had some great times in SOI and MOS school. Motor trizzle!

Can some one tell me why between 1:33 and 1:41 why David Ricketts says dig em in dig em in, I told them (couldn’t quite hear something maybe about cushions) I told them not to do it but they did. Instead of calling the cadences like Tom Rhodes and some of the others? Is it due to different years and different ways USMC Basic Training they were DIs in? Or just his personal style?

Grady Philpott I understand what he means. There's nicknames for the drill instructors. Sometimes when you see a former drill instructor, Marines say he was a former hat. Because it goes Senior, J Hat which is the Drill hat, then prac hat for knowledge, and kill hat for just slaying you on the quarterdeck

When at Parris Island, I remember my Senior DI...a couple cadence notes. The two assistant DI's, of whom one was an absolute A-hole(he would later be relieved of duty in 2002), and the other, whom had a voice deserving of being at Carnegie Hall. Very motivational. And always gave orders with a cadence for all.

My senior DI SSGT. Gallagher would smoke all these guys.. I can still hear his voice today and I get goosebumps every time. Anyone who's been there and got bad news from back home (dear John letter, grandma died, etc.) knows how much more miserable life at MCRD can get.. But when we were practicing close order drill on the parade deck, especially after chow when the sun was setting... I swear to God his voice and the way he called cadence was almost hypnotic. Like being in a trance or some outta body experience type shit. The only thing I could hear besides his voice, was the sound of our boots. The only thing I could see was the back of the recruit's head in front of me. Anything and everything else was either on another plane of existence or ceased to exist entirely. I had no problems. I had no stress. Just peace. What I would give to have just an hour with my senior DI on the parade deck again... If i get to heaven's gates and i dont hear him calling cadence and the sound of boots on the ground.. I'm getting back on the escalator and going down to hell

Well said! What a comment - yes. How awesome would it be to go back and drill for just an hour with that one DI who could put you literally into a trance. Your mind clear, just focused on that next command and hearing the thunder of the boots hitting the deck.
