It's sad it's no longer like that anymore. It's now like high school summer camp with male and females training together boot camp.

There is so much more training now - did you listen to the training schedule? A few hours at hand to hand or first aid training. No wonder Vietnam was such a disaster.

In January 1966, I left for basic training. In July 1968 I graduated from Drill Sergeant School! Only going to do the necessary commitment. I served as a drill sergeant for 10 years, twice selected as the division Drill Sergeant of the Year and competed in the national finals. I then was commissioned as an officer. BLUF Retired as an O6 still wearing my drill sergeant badge. I felt and hoped that my drill sergeant training and work as an NCO made me a better officer.

in 1967, 1968, I was a Drill Sgt./Training NCO at Fort Ord - I can assure you there were more hours of training than this film indicated. More like 10-12 hours of hand to hand, 6-8 hours of bayonet, etc. Those hours in the film might have been minimum hours planned around the revamping of BCT- however, we always found more training time. Mainly, since al trainees were quarantined due the meningitis protocol - they had more time on station than other training facilities. We used this extra time for additional instruction - especially in marksmanship. Good news/bad news -- better trained rifleman- but it was a long way to the beach and back- uphill both ways..LOL

I went through BCT in the 80’s and I can assure you it wasn’t pleasant, morale inspiring, nor made me think favorably of the Army. I never knew one sock facing the wrong way could induce so much pain, sweat or “get me killed in combat”. It DID introduce me to the realities of life, accountability and how to pay attention to detail that has served me well in follow on careers.

I was drafted into the U.S.Army in 1968 during Vietnam. Nobody failed basic training during that era, the Drill Sergeants “fixed” it so everybody graduated basic training. I saw Drill Sergeants firing a trainees weapon for him on the firing range so he qualified on the rifle so he could graduate. Uncle Sam needed body counts in Vietnam!

My grandfather was a drill sergeant in Vietnam. He never talked about what happened there. He had bad ptsd and nightmares. :(

I did Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood in '82. A lot of this looks familiar 43 years later. I caught pneumonia there. It was very cold.

We need soft men to harden themselves and hard men to do the hardening. Wake up and harden yourself every day! If you aren’t doing that already, group up w some other guys who truly want to get better and strengthen and harden themselves. Then do it together. Every morning. Every day. No matter what. Hardened father, brothers, and sons are the only way we’re going to save our homes, our communities, our cities, our states, and eventually our country. Soft men are killing the United States from the inside out and our enemies are more than happy to take advantage of any opportunity to facilitate that process. Hardened men like drill sergeants are the only effective answer.
