Hi My PlayHouse, if you don't want to drill large diameter holes you can drill say, 5 or 6mm diameter holes, then dip with a 4mm wide strip of thin cardboard to find the levels. Easier to reseal using plugs or stainless steel screws. With opaque cases if you can see the levels are low, you can drill tiny 2mm holes & inject the distilled water like is done to refill ink cartridges. Polyester resin (car body filler) easily fills tiny holes & is pretty acid resistant. Much less pressure against tiny holes, especially during an overcharge situation. You can charge wet batteries for a few hours at up to 16 volts max to equalize/ help desulfate them ,in a well ventilated area. Don't do this more than twice a year. If you've drilled holes make sure the plates are initially covered, then add a bit more water at the end of the 15.5- 16v charge. (I've done this with Varta powerframe batteries similar to yours.) Hi Morten, nice video. You can check the individual voltage of each cell with a multimeter by putting the + and the - in 2 nearby cells. The last cells it's between the last hole and the pole of of the battery. Don't put the leads in the holes (it will corrode them) instead put a wire (preferably a solid core wire) in an alligator clip and the wire in the hole. I'm also playing with batteries right now and have the same problem with dead cells.

Looks like my flat batteries also do not have any way to access them aside from drilling. That is the last time I am buying sealed lead acid batteries.

Did you ever do more experiments on drilling holes to more recent car batteries (new ones being sealed) and how to reseal them? Thanks

Thank you for this video. I had a Varta battery too but I was not sure where to make a hole. How ever I used a piece of 15 mm pipe. I heated it on the gas hub and pushed it in the the battery. Warning: Make sure your wife is out when you do this.

I have this exact battery- was hoping not to drill and find a way to pop the covers off- there are holes in either ends of them. Was hoping they were the key to popping them off, perhaps a special tool or some improvisation might do that. do you still have this battery?

Voltage u are measuring is voltage of charger. To measure voltage of battery u need to disconnect charger and wait 24 hours! Regards Alan

My PlayHouse, I have some batteries, yesterday I noticed something strange in mine; that your battery is the same as mine, they are '' johnson control '' battery; They have a labyrinth-shaped lid, I used a steel blade, and hammered, in the sides, near the ventilation hole, with the result of having removed the entire labyrinth cover, then I applied a plexiglass panel on top of it. made 6 small holes to vent the battery! It was not difficult! with this I could put water.

Never leave a battery on charge without supervision. I had 2 battery nearly explode on me. They were hot af boiling acid. Optima battery's 1 red and 1 blue. Charging using professional smart charger

I just tried to remove the cover of a battery with this construction to add water to the cells. Half an hour of prising and chiselling later, I realised the cover was welded and it didn't have caps like normal batteries. All I'd succeeded to do was break the welds and expose the open tops of the cells. Oops. I should have tried drilling it. Any ideas what you can use to close off those holes after drilling?

Hey i want some advice bro i got new sealed acid battery during deleivery they doesnt handle it properly due to water is leaked no damage to battery is done just water is drained now i want to refill but we need to pull the battery upper plate which is hard i want advice that can i do 4-5 hole in battery rather to pull off all the plate which can make mor worse please explain?

My problem is if I drill holes in the battery so I can add water and salt in it to charge it and use it how am I to re seal it? My battery doesn't have holes on the top it's a flat top deal.. do I pry it off? HOW WERE YOU GOING TO ISE YOURS WITH ALL THE HOLES IN IT?

Dear sir, in order tot fully charge a lead battery out have tot charge it up to 14.40 volts during the " bulk fase" in wich the battery is charged for 80 percent....after that your charger ( a modern ons that is , with a so could triple charge regime) your antique absaar only had one mode....a modern charger wil then go in the maintenance mode in which the voltage will bee reduced Tull 13.6 volts land allso with a smaller amperge that eventuele wil het the battery topped up till 100 percent of charge, thuis fase van taken the longest time mostly 6 ours or more, after thuis the charger wil " flout charge) with a voltage of no more thans 13.2 volts therofore keeping tour battery ready tot use when needed. In other wordt, i would advies tovgetvrit of that absaar land incest in a decent modern charger en try again nut charge for a day or two....then about 2 jours after getting the battery disconnect VROM charge you van make a voltage measure, a charges healthy battery schuld measure between 12.7 - 12.9 volt. Rule of thumb ! If you know you got a old and fail battery with a multimeter test ! Never plug a charger in to charge a battery ! Always remove the caps to insure all 6 cells is top off with distilled water before attempting to charge ! If you disregard this and you try to charge with low water level ? You will fried the cells and the battery will be no good then for rebuild ! This is the #1 cause of bad cells... humans nature !
