This is one of the bigger downfalls to integrated headsets, the take more time to change bearings out and you have to re work the hydraulic hoses for the brakes..... but it can be done. This case in particular was one of the worst i have seen for damaged headset bearings, the bearing literally fell apart when I touched it.... I hope you all enjoyed and I know it is long but I had fun filming at work

THIS is why I am not rushing to buy a new bike with INTEGRATED cables. What a pain in the ASS with NO advantages other that perceived aesthetics. Not to mention increased weight. The Aethos is the only bike I would consider if it a taller head tube for my aging back. And for the price of some of these mass produced Chinese "high end frames", I think I rather go full custom with a smaller builder. CYCLING IS THE NEW GOLF!!

How are you going to annihilate fellow riders on the local bike path without the 2w@45kph saving? Seriously though you are absolutely right. I'm not a luddite, I like Disc brakes and wide tyres, but whilst disc brakes especially have some drawbacks, they do offer significant benefits, fully hidden cables offer literally nothing. the brands don't even advertise the watt savings because its so minimal.

I have ridden many carbon bikes over the years, but last year managed to rustle up enough $ to get a custom steel frame with external cabling, on it I run shallow rims on large flanged hubs and to my amazement I am smashing PBs done on light carbon frames with aero wheels, and I was fit then too…..go figure.

Any design that routes the cables through the bearing is just dumb. Some designers had the good sense not to do this. For example, Giant's integrated design routes the cables behind the bearing, allowing a mechanic to swap the headset bearings without disconnecting anything.

No special tools needed from SRAM or specialized... Watching you disassemble the shifters and draining the brake fluid... It's like watching a doctor perform surgery. I'll be the odd man out, but please bring back the rim brakes. No need for complex routing of brake lines/fluid and tools needed

The amount of rust on the nuts is ridiculous... Even if you ride your bike daily, the nuts shouldn't get stuck to the cables. Sram needs to revise the materials used here. As far as internal cable routing, it looks awesome but does requires a bit more work when changing the headset bearings which is not a problem but good to take into consideration when buying a new bike...

There is no need to remove any tape or any cables just lift the handle bar off and put it on a towel holding the frame while you remove the upper area. I believe the bulk of the water enters through the top spacers and cable guides around the steerer tube, then follows the steerer tube down to the bearing. Not a weather proof design at all. Awesome video! This is porn for home bike mechanics. I don't have a complicated integrated head system, so it was fascinating to watch the whole way through. Always learning something from watching this. Just a quick question, was the rust caused by overwashing, or from riding in wet conditions? I have experienced the same thing myself, so I am wondering if I should avoid rinsing my forks after a ride in wet conditions. I live in Norway, where there is a lot of salt used in the winter, too.

I'm in the process of building up a 2022 Allez Sprint from components. I went with the SRAM eTap. So, I just have the rear brake cable in the downtube. When connecting to the rear brake lever, I had to run the cable with very little slack. Otherwise, it rattles when turning the bars, even with the cable insulator. This means I have no margin with the cable if I want to make adjustments. Just so I understand. You mentioned something about the slack in the cable. Where did you place the extra slack? Did you say in the bars? Or in the frame/ headtube area?

@GCPerformance18 Hi again! I completed my Allez build. It turned out the new rear caliper (SRAM Rival) had sticky pistons, causing all sorts of brake rub. I couldn't rectify the situation. To replace the caliper, I decided to run a new hydraulic line because of no slack. The first internal routing was over the bottom-bracket. In an attempt to produce the same result, I connected a routing cable and pulled the old hydraulic line out so I wouldn't have remove the crankset. When I tried to route the new line, no matter what I did I couldn't route over the BB. It would bind. So I routed under the BB. Since there is no spindle interference, I assume this is acceptable. However, I'd appreciate your opinion on routing hydraulic lines.
