Great video. The Boss is really impressive. I still love that Fender the most though. There is a dynamic blooming quality in the Fender that the pedals have yet to capture.

I appreciate the dano because it give some smoothness and adds a kind of clarity to my whole pedal chain (my TC Vintage Bass Distortion problably makes that necessary). I use it after a Carl Martin Red Repeat echo and before a Mooer Shimverb at the chain end. Good enough for me and for what I play. No dripping though, I confirm that ...

Used to have a Gibson tank. Sounded great but was really old & starting to go. Have the Boss & love it for what it is. Impressive how well it stands up. BUT to my ears the Topanga really sounded darn good. Have thought about the Dano. You can really hear the dif between the Dano & The real thing. The real Fender has a nice evenness of Tone. But for now I'm messing with the Roland Space Echo pedal & a HOF. They both do well. Great vid. Job well done!

The only time I could hear the difference between the boss and fender It was the pitch thing you mentioned but only whenever you’re using the whammy bar some of the reverberation was clashing. As for the toolbox circuit I think it sounds great and if you use Shielded cable running from the input and output and put that circuitboard fully enclosed in an aluminum enclosure Inside the toolbox. Steel doesn’t shield from Emfs as well as aluminum; A neon sign on the stage will make it unusable in its current state. Thanks for the video

That Fender unit just has something! Can only be the tube circuitry. I did like the Danelectro when the controls were cranked....seemed to be doing the job. Using the toolbox to house your home-build? Great idea, LOL! I hope you sort out the nasty hum because there's a useable sound in there otherwise. Cool video!

I was fortunate enough to pick up Billy Zoom’s Little Kahuna when those were available. It has a really drippy surf sound but I usually play it with the surf mode off and use it to make the guitar sound bigger. It also has a really nice warmth to the sound. It also has a tremolo that’s quite a bit more versatile than the tremolos I’ve heard on amps.

I love the sound of the boss, its very close to the actual fender. The only problem I have is that when you set it really high it distorts quite a lot, specially when you hit the strings hard. Its a very ugly distorted clip sound, if it wouldnt have that it would be so perfect in my opinion.
@ronlight7013

I've wondered about the origin of the "drip." To my ear it's the sound of a "keer-plunk" at the end of each note. I saw one video where the winning formula was to add a slapback echo effect to the reverb. It definitely added the desirable "plunk" to the verb to drive home the wetness.

The biggest difference I’ve found, between spring and non-spring reverbs, is that the non-spring reverbs don’t have that quick, initial slap-back on each note. Just play one note, slowly, and switch between the two. You’ll notice the difference immediately. Also, in my humble opinion, a two-spring, 16 inch tank is the way to go for real surf sound.

I have the Fender Reverb Unit. It sounds great. From your samples, the Boss sounds really good but I like the Topanga better than the Boss. Your Tool Box, I mean Surfy Bear, LOL, sounds great. I like the Bear a little better. The Fender Reverb is great, don't get me wrong but the Bear is just that much better. I see what you mean about the Dano not having the drip. Sounds good for what it is and maybe some people don't need the drip. Love your Hallmark guitar. The sound is great. I have three Mosrites. Two vintage and one Japanese. The vintage are one Mark 1 and a Mark V. The Japanese a Mark 1. They all are great.

FRV-1 is quite scratchy sounding i found (yes i have one). I found a 6mtr lead between it and amp takes out the scratchiness and makes it sound MUCH more organic (those pedals are SOOO trebly that the extra capacitance of a longer lead takes some of the extra highs out ....its not going to sound like a real tank...but its much closer. (just found this out today...before doing it that way i wasnt crazy about it....oh...use a 3mtr lead from guitar to pedal to keep your guitars tone just how it should be....then you are in Surfland!!!) Hey, Ryan, quick question about the surfybear - how did you mount the reverb pan to the toolbox? I want to get the kit and I was thinking about a similar box for the chassis but I'm not sure how to go around doing it. Screwing the pan to the bottom(open side down) seems intuitive but then I'd probably have to do something about the bolt heads scratching the floor and generally making the whole thing less stable.

Strange that the FRV1 gives you that trouble with your overdrives. Boss pedals usually have an ok analog dry-through path. Have you tried it with the pedal on, and the mix all the way off? (dry?) - Does it still have the issue? Maybe you could try it AFTER the Topanga, and/or, set the mix lower on FRV1, with the tone and dwell cranked, so it could just contribute drip without coloring your tone so much.? I think the Danelectro will definitely drip if you hit it hard. You could try boosting it with the Topanga... Fun videos. Thank you. 😊

Hey Ryan! I recently acquired a reissue fender reverb tank and have been trying to tweak it to get it working optimally (replacing blown tubes, etc.) what are your thoughts on “crashing” this tank by bumping it? I noticed when I did that to mine it goes crazy loud and starts short-circuiting the crash sound, rather than doing anything useful. Does your unit do this as well? Is it because of the tube-driven circuit?

Ok, i dont say it drips as good as the first 4 here, but to experiment, i unearthed my Zoom G21u effects pedal , and by tweaking the Spring Reverb on it and adding a little tremelo from the same pedal, I got what sounds like a fairly good drip from it, through a Laney Cub12 R amp, and using a squier strat, neck pickup

Hi Ryan, I just discovered and subscribed to your channel. You've shown each time you demo the boss that it kills your overdrive tone, are you always running the overdrive first? I would be very interested to see a comparison of drive -> reverb vs reverb -> drive. If you think of the Fender SAR going into a cranked up amp you have reverb before drive. Take care!

I've got a SpringKing. I'm pretty sure it's got a PT2399 in it... in addition to the Spring. I've seen a Video where this dude had replaced the Tank & it sounded worlds closer to the '50/60s Surf "Drip" you're chasing. Mercedes Escobar posted the link below ( ...to one of two Videos like this that I've chanced across. ) You could always bypass the Chip, replace the Tank & ( probably ) wind up with something on par with what you're after... for way less money! :] ( You can also do a little soldering, add a couple Potentiometers & pimp the PT2399 into a proper BBD emulating monster with Self Oscillation & everything! )

Have you ever tried any IRs of Fender reverb tanks?
@Andrew-kg9yo
@Andrew-kg9yo 3 жыл бұрын
Here is something I don’t believe a lot of people understand about IRs. A IR “impulse response” is a mathematical model of a system. It’s based on something called the Laplace transform. The transform can correctly model a system if it is LTI (linear and time invariant). The response of a spring is inherently nonlinear, meaning the transform can’t accurately model it. When you measure the impulse response of a spring, you can capture the linear aspect of its sound, but not it’s nonlinear behavior (aka the drip).

A former bandmate used the Spring King, but replaced it instantly after using it in a live setting. It sounds good by itself but the problem is the springs get triggered by bassdrum and bass vibrations or sometimes even by just walking around. It depends on the floor you are standing on but the moment you turn it on you get constant harsh noise-"kicks" at random points. Especially when playing live (louder, closer, shakier floors, more stomping on stage) You should keep this in mind before buying it. At least in our project it was completely unusable, we sounded pretty lo-fi/garage-ish but even in this band context it was just too chaotic and unreliable.

There are a few diy kits out there for the Fender tanks that will save you some money. Also I found out, that the built in reverb tank of my 1993 Fender Blues DeVille 4x10 has a surprisingly nice and heavy drip to it! The only problem is, that the reverb tail is insanely long at anything above 3.5 (and it can go up all to 12..) If there would be an option to integrate a dwell control into the Blues DeVilles Reverb circuit, I’d never need a external Fender Reverb Unit..

traditionally a reverb unit is supposed to go into the front of the amp, not through the loop.
@vinnievidi1
@vinnievidi1 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, I get that; but traditionally, all mainstay pedals were made to go into the front. I only asked because you were saying that the BOSS was not playing well with your drives. Bypassing your pre may clear that up. I had a similar problem with a delay pedal as well as the Ventris, especially when I'd have my main drive (Archer IKON) engaged. I was just about to return the Ventris before trying this. I never thought to use an FX loop -- in fact, I was kind of against them since I was trying to stick to a vintage-style chain -- but upon suggestion from someone in my band, I tried it and it was like night and day. Took some soul searching to accept using a loop, but it solved my problem. Again, it may be worth a shot since it sounds like you're having a very similar issue with the Boss. Or not. Just a suggestion.

I think the tube driven spring reverb has something that no pedal has, and most people don't know what it is when they hear it, until you tell them, then it's obvious. A tube driven reverb has a millisecond almost Wah effect, blooming INTO the notes, the notes sound like they are being played into a half cocked wah pedal, listen for it, on the Fender reverb unit, and you can hear it. The Fender has almost a WahWah sound to it.

Is it wrong that no matter how many videos i watch to steer away from the dano, i end up prefering it to 95% of the pedals i hear. Yes a real spring tank sounds beter, but i need a pedal that can drip without having to depend on cranking the reverb on my amp, it washes out that high. The dano is huge but it still sounds the most like a full tank and not just a vibrato added to reverb.

thats kind of a niche/rare/not well known unit. There aren't even videos of those available and i cant find any articles/posts of people saying they sound good. So maybe you have one and you think its great? id love to hear an example of it if you do.

Hey Ryan, have you tried out the Carl Martin Headroom? Very curious to hear your take.

iiaaiiaannaaiiaaii I haven’t, from the demos I’ve heard it sounds like a nice amp style reverb. But not so much a surfy drippy reverb.

Honestly playing to a sold out show, in front of screaming kids that don’t know the difference the price of the spring king is hands down imho

I feel like, while the FRV1 drip is not harmonically related to the notes, neither is the real Fender spring reissue..

You know, I don't think the drip is in the key of what you're playing...I think the drip is defined by the springs...which is a fixed factor...just my opinion...

THE FENDER 6G15 IS THE ORIGINAL AND THE BEST REVERB FOR SURF.....THE BOSS FRV 1 IS THE MOST CHEAP AND THE BEST COPY....THE TOPANGA IS A NORMAL REVERB..NOT FOR SURF..AND THE SPRING KING IS LIKE A TOY....SOUND GOOD...BUT...IS JUST A TOY FOR KIDS...NOISE.

Agree, except for the Spring King - it's a pretty nice sounding, hybrid reverb pedal ... and the 'crash-ability' is a cool, extra feature ... :)
