One of Cooley's best. I dunno...maybe it hits harder once you reach a certain age when you're no longer closing down bars multiple times a week and sleeping around. On the contrary, you begin to regret some of your youthful excesses, become more alarmed daily at the increasing number of gray hairs you find, and see the friends you partied hard with in your twenties and thirties raising young sons and daughters. Much like "Primer Coat" it's a deceptively deep about song about dealing with the shock and confusion of middle age. Also, with lines like "It's what alive feels like / Bored children caught between dog days when night turns them loose" it ranks up there on the list of best Springsteen songs that Springsteen never wrote.

He doesnt say anything in this lyric. Doesnt even deserve to be mentioned in same breath as great songs like Pulaski, Birthday Boy, Space City, Where the Devil Don't Stay, Carl Perkins' Cadillac, Marry Me, 72 (This Highway's Mean), Guitar Man Upstairs, Zip City or Women Without Whiskey.

why? I think Patterson is doing what he wanted ever since he was 8. Both tell great stories. don't be so absolute. it's an opinion and it's rock. I can't find many songs I didn't Like. truckers make great cs album's. my opinion

Great song and lyrics, but Bruce woulda put "filthy & fried" in a catchy refrain. Damn, maybe you guys shoulda done the same, I'm practically singing the refrain in my head. "...heaven's waitin down on the tracks... [build up]"... Filthy & Fried, Filthy and Fried............

G S maybe but 18 Wheels of Love has traditional refrain and is catchier probably for that reason. Plus he repeats the filthy and fried line twice anyway. At very least I’d ramp up a solo after the tag line to emphasize it.
