I just heard this, and instantly fell in love. As if there really needed to be any more tracks in Cooley's catalogue to cement his status as on my generation's greatest songwriters. This is frigging icing on the cake.

It's a fucking KILLER song. Cooley is a dead set legend. So fucking humble too. You can see that in the way he carries himself when he plays - I almost get the impression sometimes that he doesn't think he had there "right" to be doing what he does. It's weird, but he's totally legit.

In his 2nd court appearance, he lied he had been provoked by Ramon by knife, but how often does a kid (outside of a 3rd world country) stroll around with a gun, especially his daddies shotgun. He got away with murder, became an agent himself and then launched himself in the political arena to the top of the NRA, all while he pretty much rallied other ppl who didnt feel like they belonged to go and hunt illegal immigrants. These scumbags killed innocents, women and children alike like they were animals for sport. This song is incredible. Im a son of the south (GA native) and i love me some Drive by truckers. Its a cultural identity of xenophobia and privilege that must be reflected upon.

No way is this anything like close to as good as the several best on Go Go Boots. Patterson Hood was great again on that. Neither are anything like that level on this album.

Better late than never, Jim! Explore their entire catalog. Plenty of variety and evolution since the late 90s. Enjoy.

Definitely do some exploring, Jim! I came to the party on the heels of "The Dirty South," and I realized how much more there was out there. It's a band with 20+ years history, and they are, I think, one of the most important bands in America today. They're one of the greatest rock bands I've ever heard, and I rank them up there with the all-time greats. And if you get the chance to see them live, do it!

Go get the dirty south and southern rock opera....and you will be a life long fan

I stumbled upon "Southern Rock Opera" through a record company rep that brought it into my record store when it released in 2001 and instantly fell in love with this band. I have never looked back. One of the gems of this generation.
