In this easy to follow video tutorial I show you how to replace the drive pulley on your Craftsman lawn tractor. Although this is a Craftsman model #944.607090 the same procedure will apply to most lawn tractors.
**The owner opted not to replace the drive belt on this tractor even though it was slightly frayed**

Thanks very much for this clear and excellent video. My son and I had to replace the drive belt on our Craftsman DYT 4000 mower and this video was what we needed to get it done. The only difference I encountered on my mower was that the wiring connector to the clutch was a bit different, and didnt want to come apart easily. Not wanting to damage it, I found that the wire was long enough to lay the clutch on the ground without disconnecting it, so I left it alone. Thanks!!

I watched this video since my Craftsman LT 1000 tractor have been having problems with the drive belt and I replaced the belt twice within a short time frame and after putting the new belt on the tractor drove just fine until I ran into an area where it had to go up hill and was pulling the lawn sweeper behind it. It stopped pulling again and I put on another new belt and it is working fine now, but I am afraid it may be the pulley now that may be the problem and I have to replace it. I have a diagram of the parts with the part number and will get another one just in case that is the problem. As always, Don, I thank you so much for the tips on repairing the mowers, and God Bless.

This would be the best, most informative and concise 'how to' video I've seen ever ! Excellent job Don. As an engineer with 40yrs experience who's looked at many how to videos, most always leave out the important little things or prattle on with nonsense, not this one. Now Don how do I get the drive pulley out of a Countax or John Deere clutch ? On these tractors the clutch has the pulley pressed into it ... the problem there's also a washer/spacer pressed in the other side so nowhere to press ?

Hey Donyboy I got a husqvarna yth180 lawn tractor and replaced drive belt old one kept popping off trans pulley. I figured it did that cause of the cracked worn out belt. I replaced the drive belt with the OEM drive belt from sears and this coming Monday the 24th would of been two weeks since I done the repair. It has worked flawless since then up until this evening. I used the tractor earlier today and all was fine tonight I went to use it just to ride a bit and the new popped off. What do you think the problem is it only pops off trans pulley then gets lodged underneath. I used this mower to mow my cousins yard all year and brought it back home a couple weeks ago because of the grass slowing down for the year and this has started happening. I can't understand why all of a sudden this is happening. I have had tractor since earlier this spring neighbor pulled it out of barn and gave it to me.

Would it be possible to convert my Craftsman Lawn Tractor's manual deck engagement to the electric clutch? My old Craftsman Lawn Tractor had the electric PTO, this manual lever engagement seems to have a lot of slippage while engaging/disengaging and to me it just leads to faster belt wear.

Great video again Donyboy. I repair cars for a living and I will never understand why someone would go to the expense to replace the pulley and refuse to replace a frayed belt. If the customer can't afford a belt they should park it. If it slips and doesn't work properly you will be the one who is at fault but I guess you can't win em all.

Nicely done,though I am a bit leery of the pipe wrench. They tend to chew what they grip, rather use a vise grip or if possible a strap wrench. I have found that a new belt on a new sheave should crown slightly. If a new belt drops to the bottom of the sheave then either a worn sheave or the wrong belt.

Great video Dony as always! Thanks! I think the hardest part for most of us DIY'ers is finding a suitable place to work, especially on lawn mowers. Any thoughts on good quality lift tables? Need something at around 25 inches in width to accommodate the width of most walk behind mowers. Thanks again.

Tony M Never thought of a lift table, but my local repair shop has kind of a ramp type setup that leads to a workbench. You can drive the equipment up onto the table, or pick it up and set it on there, depending on the type of equipment you are working on. It sure beats trying to work on stuff on the ground.

Any tips? thanks.

Had to replace the drive belt on my MTD Yard Machine riding mower. Didn't even know it was bad because my yard is nice and level. When I tried to mow a yard with inclines it wouldn't move, even at 10% grade.... At first I thought the transmission was going... Upon inspection the main drive belt (long belt) going from the engine to the rear was good but the smaller drive belt had a crack in it which was slipping/stretched. Simple $9 belt from autozone. Went back the same day and mowed the hilly lawn with no issues. I used to dread going to the local small engine repair shop even for parts. The only shop in twenty miles. He charges two to three times what I can get parts for online. On top of that every time I try to buy parts they have to be ordered anyway and that takes about a week anyways. Biggest issue is part numbers... All I normally need is that and I used to feel bad asking him to look up info and then just leaving. Now I just give him $5 for his time and the number so I can order off of amazon or ebay.

My lawn mower, which is a Craftsman model 917.270532 has similar problems. It will barely move forward or backwards on it's own. With the rear end off the ground the wheels will turn but once they are on the ground under a normal load the mower will barely move and has a terrible grinding noise. It sounds like the transaxle gears are grinding against one another however, I removed the top of the transaxle and everything looks fine. There are no metal shavings and all gears seem to be in great shape. The pulley on the transaxle seems to have a little slack but it has a key connecting it to the shaft so I see no way to tighten it. The other pulley and belt tensioner seems to be ok but under a load may perform differently. I'm sure the belt needs replacing since it has been on the mower for years. How can I test the pulleys to know if they are bad? They appear to be fine when turning them by hand but under a load could be different. Also, since this mower is so old parts are becoming harder to find. Does anyone know of a place who still stock basic parts for this mower? I have found some used mowers like this but everyone wants 3 to 5 hundred dollars and I hate to put that much money into a twenty year old mower.The only reason i'm trying to repair it is because it was given to me by my father in law who has since passed away and I hate to give this up also. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Randall

I am replacing the drive belt on a 2006 MTD Huskee 54" garden tractor with a new engine pulley, but the pulley on mine was oriented with the slot on the pulley towards the bottom not near the top. What do you suggest for a Drive Pulley that doesn't want to come off?
@EddieTheGrouch
@EddieTheGrouch 9 жыл бұрын
So many people overlook pulley wear as the cause of their problems. Many things like mowers, furnaces, fans, drill presses and machinery rely on them to provide a good grip on the belt to transfer motion. Too many folks just replace the belt thinking that's the sole wear item and their fix will only be temporary.

I just had issue doing this on an MTD zero turn. I'm trying to rebuild it after it burned up on my neighbour and she gave it to me. I had to cut off the old pulley and unfortunately never took a picture. Replacement pulley has one collar thinner and rounded edge and no key. Other side is thicker and has key. I assumed the rounded collar should go up against crank shaft and so key was down , not up as per your sears. Then I put the clutch on. Extreme torque says torque of bolt is critical and 50-55 ft lbs for 7/16" bolt. Before I could reach the spec the the upper collar split apart. There is a ridge in the clutch that could hit bottom of shaft and prevent clutch from compressing drive pulley further but dimensions are such that this ridge is going to be 1/2 inch below the end of the shaft.
@kenh9176
@kenh9176 5 жыл бұрын
key section on MTD definitely goes down , not up, because the key goes right to edge of collar and won't go up right since keyway in crankshaft doesn't go to top of shaft next to engine. The other end goes up because it has no key in it. On your sears I see the key does not extent to edge of collar so it can go up.

***** No, its the garbage metal they make pulleys out of now. My old Craftsman lawn tractor never had a single pulley replaced on it in 20 years. Belts every few years, but never a pulley. They never wore out. These new machines are designed to last 5 years, after that its up to the poor owner whether they want to pour a bunch of money into the junk.

MissouriOldTimer Probably trying to save money. Problem is, the belt may be stretched so it could potentially still have mobility troubles. I have a similar lawn tractor, mine is the lower grade than the one in the video so it has the manual deck engagement so no electric PTO clutch. However, the way they have the transmission drive belt routed in these newer lawn tractors is ridiculous. Just about have to flip the dang tractor upside down to work on it. Or hang it in a tree to gain descent access, then you still have to remove the deck most of the time. Not a fun chore, almost worth buying a new lawn tractor when the belt fails LOL.

MissouriOldTimer My 1992 MTD Ranch King is that type of setup. I really don't want to have to change those belts LOL. When I got it last year it wouldn't go very fast at all, ran like crap...it still looks like crap, but the previous owner's kids beat the crap out of it. The VS pulley had a piece of wire stuck in it so it wouldn't open up all the way for high gear. Took that apart pulled the wire out of it. Does great now, but yes total pain in the a** to work on LOL. I did end up rewiring it to a push button start and toggle on/off switch as it wasn't running right and had some other electrical issues. It runs awesome now, cuts grass better than my 5 year old Craftsman pile of junk lawn tractor ever has.

From the looks of that existing belt just changed it while you're changing out the pulley.

That worn pulley could totally wear out belts prematurely I'm guessing.

lead foot lawn mower Even see how a lawn looks using a POS residential mower at higher speeds? It looks pretty bad, sometimes so bad it looks like you never even mowed. These types of mowers were not designed to go that fast, as the mower blades actually don't spin fast enough to keep up with higher speed mowing. The commercial machines on the other hand have faster blade speeds which is why the commercial mowers can go faster while still maintaining a great quality cut. It also depends on the grass you are cutting and the conditions. Anyhow, yep it would be fun to change the pulley and go faster. Many people have turned old lawn tractors into go-karts. A few are on youtube of course. Some go so far as to disassemble the transmission and weld the open differential parts thus locking the axle together giving you posi-trac LOL.

WOW dude you typed all that for a joke. i do this kind of stuff for a living. modifying mowers is my game. dont believe me or any of us. go check out southern offroad mowers on facebook. i think you will be pretty surprised at what ( home owners ) riding mowers can do. ill even give you a link facebook.com/groups/SouthernOffroadMowers/ and ask someone what there mower can do compared to your commercial grass cutter. people on here and one other group literally have mowers that can cut down trees along there travel if they needed to. some iv even seen have 4x2 and 4x4 drive capability. and no im not here to argue. im just saying there are mowers out there better then some $9,000 commercial mower that can mow at 15+mph

Take sandpaper to your old pulley to rough it up and you can get more life out of it.

Maybe if they made the pulleys out of steel instead of aluminum they'd last the lifetime of the tractor.
