Thank you so much for this. Ive searched far and wide for this exact problem on an 03 aviator and couldn't find anything on any forums, Google, or on KZfaq. This is exactly what the problem is. I didn't even know what to search and I came across your video on accident somehow. Thank you so much again.

Great video; definitely gotta find the original problem. Perfect example: I bought a 2000 4runner a few months ago. I noticed that the brakes had a slight vibration, but nothing too bad so I didn't really worry about it. After a few weeks it was noticeably worse and when I came back from the mountains it was TERRIBLE heading downhill. I figured the rotors needed to be turned but they were so old I just bought new ones. This somewhat fixed the problem but the vibration was still there (just not as bad). I wondered if the pads wore weirdly in the one month I used them in conjunction with the bad rotors (pads were new when i bought the car). Sure enough when I checked them out, the pads on the driver/front were noticeably more worn at the top than at the bottom. I replaced the pads and the vibration was gone...for a couple days lol. After a few days it was bad again and when I re-checked the brake pads, the pads on the driver/front were cracked! At this point I figured it had to be the caliper. I rebuilt the caliper (and swapped out the pads) and WOW what a difference. Not only was the vibration gone but the braking was awesome. The 4runner caliper actually has 4 pistons (two on each side); I assume only 1, maybe 2, pistons were working when I bought the car which was causing weak braking, weird wear, and excessive heat/pressure. Once all 4 were working the vehicle had world-class braking. I rebuilt the other side because I could tell it wasn't operating at 100% and sure enough once all 4 pistons were moving freely the braking was superb and like-new. So, yeah, you may be tempted to point at the obvious problem (like old rotors, or worn pads) and say THAT is the problem. But you will just keep having problems until you find the axiomatic problem.

Very good diagnostics you made and being honest to your customer. No mechanics around here in Cassville, MO. don't use the theory's that you use and should be done, period. I wish more people would park the vehicle rather than continue to drive till it breaks. I do most diagnostic tests for free or very cheap. I've got 25 years experience and I would rather lose a few dollars in the diagnostic then replace a destroyed part that could have been repaired And even with two many years as a A.S.E certified tech. Sometimes I have a problem that i get stuck on and need advice or i just watch to see what other people are doing. Great video and problem diagnosis. You picked up another subscriber.

This guy has such a great point.... Find the issue and the cause of the issue... MAF sensor went bad, I just bought a new one ($100) and put it on. The new one also short circuited. Finally, I looked for the cause... and found it. Exposed wiring got wet from the rain and shorted the MAF. I insulated the wiring, then I put another MAF sensor on... no issue ever since.

When I worked at a Pontiac dealer in 1966 there was a drive line issue. Some cars had a drive line clunk and the factory found the problem and had the cure. It was too much clearance between rear end pinion and U joint flange. The cure was to put red lead on the splines to take up the slack. It worked. I'm sure there is something better today to use.

That is good info, thanks Matt. My mystery noise is a clunking that seems to be (seems to be) in the middle at the front. It is more of a light clunking as the expy moves forward from stop to very slow speeds. It seems like it might be a broken tooth in the differential. When 4x4 is engaged it develops an ugly shake around 40 kph (25 mph). The vibration/shake stops when I disengage the 4x4 on the fly. Two thumbs up. One for helping out others (I try to do that too), and one for the great diagnostics. Although I am sick and sore of getting under vehicles (64 yoa), your style and enthusiasm makes me want to get at it. Thanks.

He's a machinist and knows about lash and so on. The rear is hands down as hard as a bottom end. That's the worst blown rear I've seen. it blew out the front not the cover were the cast is thicker. Hi, Don't listen or rush to do expensive transfer case maintenance without trying an easier fix if this applies to you. My slipping and clunking wasn't turning related - just while driving in 4 wheel drive. My Ford Ranger is a relatively new v6 with low miles so I thought this shouldn't be happening. The problem was an easy fix but figuring it out wasn't as easy. My key question for you is: Are u driving with four IDENTICAL TIRES? I was driving with 2 different pairs but they were the same size. I thought this was OK. However, the front transaxle noise only started when I chged tires. My tranny guy informed me that the height of the tire is VERY IMPORTANT and Ranger's 4x4 system is not really designed to be used on normal highway conditions (this is where the clunking began). Furthermore, different manufacturer's will produce tires with different circumferences, even if the sizes are the same. I measured my two pairs and sure enuf, one pair was a HALF INCH higher than the other one. Multipy this difference exponentially at higher speeds and the front end will slip and or clunk. I went out and bought 4 new IDENTICAL tires and lo and behold - PROBLEM SOLVED! Good luck, Mike, NS Canada

About 10 years ago a co-worker had a early 2000's Grand Cherokee and his rear differential went due to NO lubrication. Turned out that his axle seals were leaking, i told him whom ever was doing his oil changes should have been checking the fluid level at each oil change, that overlooking cost him about $1500.00 to rebuild due to someone's laziness

the tag on the diff is actually a machining tag. if this were to be a serviceable diff, you would use the numbers on the tag to get the correctly machined parts to rebuild the diff. the escape triplets escape/tribune/mountaineer do not have serviceable rear diff. even the stealership will only swap the complete unit.

Think the terms you were missing after cracking open the rear diff are pre-load and backlash. I don't have a RWD vehicle though but you know me always learning stuff I'll never use, like OBD-II diagnostics. haha

That is correct. I will eventually do a video on diff rebuild where I will go into it more and show how to properly measure and adjust

+1 for filming under a vehicle and having it look pretty decent (i know the pain of being able to see something clearly with your eyes, but near impossible to get it in a pic/video)
