Switching from gasoline to electric is an easy decision if you’re shopping the 2022 Audi e-tron GT. And the high-performance RS is an even easier sell, if you have the money. It looks great, has terrific range, excellent fast charging speed and looks, well, like an Audi. It’s based on the same architecture as Porsche’s Taycan and shares some of its goodness. But the e-tron GT has its own appeal and character. It competes with Tesla Model S and Lucid Air. Tom Voelk takes a look at a fully loaded RS e-tron GT with the Year One package and finds a lot to like. Now, to make more money…

I've been on the sideline ever since Audi introduced the double stack center screens in 2018. During my test drive of an Audi S6, I couldn't take my eyes off the finger print magnet center console. I am glad Audi listened and now returning back to the more traditional one screen operation on some models.

Another awesome review! I have been watching Tom's reviews for years and even though he touches on any of the same features, the reviews are always fresh engaging and entertaining. So kudos! But geez, a car that costs $161,000 - I shudder to think what it would cost here in Australia, probably more than $200,000 - crazy! Are there not excellent electric cars out there that are possibly within the reach of mere mortals without winning the lottery? And also geez - $161,000 but no heated steering wheel and no seat back pockets - really?

Thanks, Tom! What a great car. I do not understand a lack of heat for steering wheel. FYI, stations are rated in kW, not kWh. I suspect a 350 kW station may have charged the Audi faster than the 150 kW one you used (depends on charge curve, of course) due to more amperage available. Also, I suspect if you can afford this car, charging costs are a minor concern.

Great revfiew Tom, well done sir. I shake my head and look at the price .. $161k?! I see the drugs are complimentary at Audi HQ .. I digress. I will add that the entry level Taycan ($85k) is cheaper than the entry level E-tron GT ($102k), and may suit alot of buyers. When comparing RS E-Tron GT with base Taycan, the price difference is even more eyebrow raising, around double the price of a base model Taycan for the RS E-Tron GT. The Taycan does the 0 - 60 dash in 5.4, plenty fast fro most folks. The Taycan Cross Turismo is also available for about a $10k premium over the base Taycan, offering a touch more interior space. I would go the Taycan all day.

@@alh06 Yeah sure, when you start climbing the trim and power trees of both marques, the Audi is the cheaper option. Its bizarre that the base model Taycan is the cheaper of the two though. By all reports its not a stripped out 911 or poor mans Porsche either, its a legit driver focused car. Will it blow the doors off a Model S? i think probably not. In every other area, it seems like a better proposition than the E-Tron GT for a mountain carver / weekend blast toy.

Even though I love the e-tron GT, almost every weekend I go to the busiest Costco in my state which has gas for 20 cents to 30 cents lower than everywhere else and even with those massive lines I can literally be out in about ten minutes. I have a large house with a large driveway, lots of garages and I have every inch of wall space full, I have no idea where I would put a stupid charger for one car much less three.

@@DrivenCarReviews I do the fill up almost every weekend and time it as a matter of principle to see if it ever gets to the point where it would rival an electric car and it does not. Always about 10 minutes total (Costco in Madison Heights, MI. People from out there know what I am talking about). To fill up my SUV from swiping the card to getting my receipt is less than 3 minutes. My garage wall space is precious, it has everything from another fridge to multiple shelving units, toolbox, yard tools hanging etc that are all in use. I also do stuff in my garage and go in there frequently so I would have large cables in my way constantly in addition to having space for my stuff taken away. Just one charger means a significant amount of space gone. It's okay to be an electric car apologist but the facts need to be acknowledged. I just sold another house I had so my 3rd bay is filled to the brim with stuff from that house until I can do something with it so I parked the car that was in there outside for now. If I had an electric car and the charger was in that bay I would not have the freedom or ability to do that, I would have to go through the expense of getting a storage unit and transporting the stuff there. Electric cars are much further away from the reality of masses of people owning them than people think.

With current gas prices, the typical 4 cylinder car will consume $18,000 of gas over 10 years. A V8 car would easily double this figure to $36,000, or more. Only a moron would intentionality want to pay these perpetual ongoing gas costs. Especially in the 2030s when EVs will replace legacy ICE cars. However, with solar panels, a home owner can recharge all their vehicles for free. The obvious financial savings are bloody huge. Moreover, in the morning the car driver will always have the full 300 mile of range available for the day.

I’m an Audi fan, and owner, but the pricing on this just makes it too far out of the realm for something I’d consider. And as much as they offer good performance and efficiency, at $161k, prospective buyers would do well looking at Lucid, where they’d get both more power and range in what is effectively a bespoke sedan. For me, the Rivian R1S is on my list and it can provide similar if not better performance and range, with more utility, at half the price. Great video Tom, as usual.

You Have Problems, Not Issues Somewhere, at some point over the recent past, someone decided that it was no longer acceptable for a person to say what he or she means; it was no longer acceptable to speak in precise, direct words. And what’s worse, someone, somewhere decided that we should all be offended when someone calls a problem a problem. Everything has to be translated into some sort of euphemism. I don’t really know why it started, but can we please stop referring to every problem as an issue? An employee no longer has a problem keeping up with production; he has an issue. A child no longer has a problem behaving in class; she has an issue. A married couple in therapy no longer has problems in their marriage; they have issues. Even bad weather now causes performance issues on the football field and traffic issues on the road; and a basketball player with a sprained ankle has an ankle issue. I’m not sure what’s so offensive about discussing traffic problems, health problems, or a sloppy football game. Is it just me? The problem-that is, what’s wrong-with substituting issue for problem is that those two words are not synonymous-and no amount of being politically correct, disingenuous, or even condescending-yes, it can be condescending-will make it so. An issue is a topic, such as The candidates will discuss the issues at the debate. That means that the candidates will discuss the different topics, or subject areas, involved in running our country. A problem is something negative. A problem is something that needs to be solved. A problem is something that we try to overcome. A problem is something that we don’t want. There, I’ve said it. And it feels great. An issue is not a problem, but I’ll tell you what is a problem: the grammatically incorrect trend of telling someone that he has an issue when what you really mean is that he has a problem. Call it what it is, and it’ll be easier to solve.

at that price range, most buyers need fastest 0-60 acceleration. If you don't need fast acceleration, there are many choices.

I don't know about that. For some? Sure. For many it's about the whole package and the Audi has attributes that will attract a lot of buyers. I suspect it'll have trouble meeting demand. Much like Porsche.

Carbon ceramic rotors seem wasted on a 5,000 pound car that will never see a race track, or not do more than a few laps without pitting for a charge. Ceramics make just as little sense on the street, since iron rotors last forever on EVs. The eTron range is still an issue for me. My BMW i4 e40 gets over 200 miles of range in winter - keeping the battery between 20-80%. That lets us do the once a week 150 mile round trip commute or 140 mile round trip to Boston without charging and with zero range anxiety while keeping the battery in the sweet spot for longevity.

I understand the dynamics of car companies being forced to start with super high end evs to compensate for the initial up front startup expenses of creating electric (not gas) cars. But it's a dam shame they couldn't somehow figure out how to tip their toes into the other, shallow, end of the pool and pump out thousands of super cheap evs for the masses... In terms of saving the planet, a few hundred rich people driving electric cars isn't even a drop in the bucket. There is so much 'less' to an electric car, they should cost way less than a gas engine. Imagine tens of millions of Americans driving around in $20,000 evs.. That would actually help clean up our air...

Maybe, but until it updates that, there are phone apps that work really well and those can be used in CarPlay and AA. Don't underestimate Hyundai/Kia.
