Following up on Nigel's folded pipe build questions.
Looking at what happens to the rear output of the driver, which is 50% of its energy output. Why the driver basket is important, and what can be done to improve it.
About time for a KZfaq title that truly embraces the platform's legendary traditions - you know, the clickbait, the outrage, and that irresistible blend of contentless, yet wildly popular dipshittery. Brace yourself for an opening shot that's as disconnected from content as it gets! Surprise - surprise, find ACTUAL HELPFUL CONTENT that will take you to the next chapter in you audiophile journey. ENJOY! 🚀
I hope you find my videos useful and instructive. You can show your appreciation through Buy me a coffee, which is a simple uncomplicated way (no subscription needed) to donate as low as 2$ to keep this channel as much ad-free as KZfaq allows.
I understand that YT adds a few ads on its own accord, on which YT collects ALL royalties (I get none.) Yet, were I to monetize the channel, the number of ads would sky-rocket and would be very disruptive to your viewing experience.
To keep my videos as ad-free as possible, I welcome your kind support through Buy me a coffee.
I spend a considerable amount of my time (and resources) to run this channel. I have NO SPONSORS, get NO KICK-BACKS, nor deals of any kind with any manufacturer, your kind support goes a very long way to help me to keep this channel going!

I appreciate every kind gesture. Also, through Buy me a coffee you can message me, and I prioritize answering the Buy me a coffee messages.

Hi Janos. I would be very interested to have your thoughts on cancellation effects. Relative to this video subject, it occurs to me that the reflections reaching the magnet/ basket/ cone are also being met by the driver’s subsequent output. But a more obvious effect for consideration must be floor bounce and driver position distance from the floor. Or maybe not, I don’t see it comes up so much. I do know that if you mount a bar of quadrant along the bottom edge of a cabinet is has a dramatic effect on the bass, for better or worse. Then again, are there not cancellation effects at play between the two stereo speakers which would change with the distance between them, even as you are judging the effect of positioning cabinets relative to boundaries. Should we be considering this more or is it a non-issue in the scale of things?

Hi Steve, this is a very good point and relevant issue! I will make a video on it ; ). Yes, a little bar close to the bottom edge does make a huge difference.

Fantastic - great explanation - really helpful to have the addrd clarifications - I am aware that some time back Dave of Planet10 did a piece on drivers mods which also looked at the basket issues (as well as some cone mods which are not likely to be for most DIY'ers!) - he also suggested reprofiling the inner flat face of baskets (and also possibly adding damping material there if not possible to reprofile) & confirmed the benefits he saw in the drivers they treated. *****

I also like to explore/see about displacement of cone vs input signal voltage graph ,to find out clipping of speaker it self. Generally production technicals only consider clipping of signal at input terminals of speaker. But there must be mechanical limit to the smooth displacement of speaker cone and it end stops. Which has to be considered to listen distortion free playback. So we know signal clipping and can control it who knows how to. But mechanical limit clipping is where we have to work/explore and find solutions.

Thank you, yes, that is a superb point! 👍👍👍👍 I think that could very well be the most important parameter yet to be added to driver measurements, and aid both high quality / high fidelity production for home users, and more freely push the max SPL for PA applications.

@@realworldaudio ya... This can be measured by high precision displacement measurement device like Bentley Nevada probs.

Tech Ingredients on KZfaq was my introduction to the Voigt tube. There are a few differences in his construction. 1) He used a damping material to deaden the plywood construction. 2) He placed a curved reflector at bottom to smooth the wave as it exits the port. Question: Are these things beneficial, unnecessary, or counterproductive? Bonus question: I saw a photo of Voigt tube speakers that have an open bottom, so the port faces downward. (It was elevated about two inches.) Your thoughts about this?

A quite old way of minimizing the 'sail' effect in pressed baskets was/is carefully (and slowly) drill asymmetric holes in order to evacuate the pushed air as quickly as possible but at random so that no 'whirlwind' can occur. Air evacuation around solid objects had a tendency to make patterns of adhesion by nature therefore random exit is the goal. If one looks at, say, a lamp post on breezy days (preferably in autumn when leaves are falling) it soon becomes clear that litter such as leaves circulate and form patterns as they appear to climb the post. Regarding the native resonant frequency of the struts of a driver basket, it is worthwhile tapping each of them. They are usually slightly different but at some point retain a total harmonic resonance somewhere of the frame. Your idea of using different thicknesses of masking tape or, better for longevity, good quality pvc insulation or parcel tape -- then remember to cut through to clear the drilled holes for evacuation. This is fiddly but well worth it.

I built a prototype with a basket connected to the motor, with ajustable rod ends. Either 6 or 8 must be used. For a push/pull tension. To cancel harmonics. The motor can be adjusted. For optimum coil alignment. And to raise or lower cone/coil static position. Unlike everything else. 😊

That's frigging genius! I wish all manufacturers built their drivers like that, in addition it would also make reconing a breeze. :)

@@realworldaudio And they have a an assortment of anodized color rods. And even Teflon rod ends. I also use them for cabinet stand hardware. For ajustable angles. Speedway motors, in house manufacturing. 😏

The area of the cabinet immediately behind the driver seems to be a choke point that interferes with the smooth propagation of waves. What if the driver was mounted an inch or two forward of the cabinet - with the appropriate modifications to the cabinet, of course?
@realworldaudio
@realworldaudio 3 ай бұрын
Yes, giving more space behind the driver would be quite advantageous. However, moving the driver forward is catastrophic. Even an 1/8in spacing already shows as very noticeable unwanted increased coloration in the midrange, and 1-2in difference shows up as a major disruption in bass, unless the spacing extends to the entirety of the front panel. (Making the cabinet extremely heavy, although doable.)

Nice, I'm glad there are mods for these superb players! Sadly mine is totally dead, and I will use it for a project.... probably as the chassis and transformer for a DIY DAC. :) To keep it in style ; )
