Driver's Eye View (New Zealand) - Palmerston North to Paekākāriki - 4K

2 ай бұрынHaving traversed the Manawatu Gorge to Palmerston North on the return leg with Steam Incorporated's special excursion train “Hawkes Bay Wine and Food by Rail” the crew kindly allowed me to leave my camera mounted on their locomotive for the run back to Paekākāriki. For the remainder of the journey we travel along part the NIMT (North Island Main Trunk) connecting New Zealand's capital city (Wellington) with it's largest city (Auckland). The line traverses fertile farmland bounded on the inland side by the Manawatu and Tararua ranges with the Cook Strait/Tasman sea on the other side. As we are travelling towards the end of the day we are treated to a magnificent New Zealand sunset, finally we arrive into Paekākāriki bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun where the train is stabled at Steam Incorporated's depot. Please join me and the crew for a relaxing journey into the setting sun.
The leading engine is DB class locomotive No.1254 with 1955 vintage General Motors diesel locomotive No.DA1410 assisting.

Well besides the beautiful countryside and panoramic views, I am really impressed in the Class-1+ trackage & roadbed and how smooth of a ride this is. No dips, no shaking or shimmy or rocking motions. And then take the transition from the road grade onto and off of a bridge, just as smooth and silent as could be, in fact the entire ride is super quiet due to the high-quality MOW crews. If anyone were to ask me for the perfect example of high-quality trackage in the world, 👉 New Zealand 💯

When I first caught a train along the Kapiti Coast the electric services finished at Paraparaumu and the track was single on to Palmerston North. The new road through Transmission Gully was being talked about, but work hadn't started. As your rightly pointed our there have been many changes.

Hello Peter, all routes out of Palmerston North are both interesting and scenic especially the route through the Manawatu Gorge. It must be the best New Zealand depot to work out of and the driver certainly gets the best views, I hope you enjoyed the video, although no video can do justice to the wonderful NZ scenery. 🍺 Tim.

The video recorded against the sun is not of the best quality, perhaps you could avoid such situations. An unwashed locomotive window is even worse than that!

I don't have a hot line to the almighty, I'm a mere mortal sadly bereft of the ability to move the sun. This train runs this route 2 or 3 times a year, I don't think it is reasonable to inconvenience all of the passengers by retiming the train to miss the setting sun and the camera was mounted on the front hand rail of the locomotive.

Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I'm still planning and booking trips for this year, realistically it is more likely that my next trip down under will be in 2025. The shrimp will have to stay swimming in the sea for a little longer, although I appreciate the offer. Take care. Tim😊.
